No James PATTON at that date that I have found as yet. I am still looking for the father of Isaac, but I do have a mother(?) Judah. And I have possible brothers of John b. 1818 and William & Gideon b. 1834. Marge
Hello List, I missed the original e-mail concerning the prison. I just wanted to share with you my experience with getting prison records. My ggrandfather served time in the Oklahoma State Prison. I contacted the OKDOC and requested the records. 7 days later, I received a copy of his entire file, including his mug shot. I had never seen a picture of him. Included in this package was a copy of finger prints, court dates, time served dates and what exactly happened in his own words. Most importantly though, was a list of just about every living relative, their current address at the time, his birthdate, birthplace and a physical description. I got tons of genealogical information from this prison record. I hope this can help someone. This prison record was from the mid 1930's and in OK. I know that years and states can be different but it is worth a try. Thanks for the Alton webpage address. My husband and I have been at that library before doing reseach on his ancestors. His great-great-great-grandfather was a steamboat captain and he lived in Alton. We have been able to find a lot information on the family there. Maureen
Looking for any information on my grandmother, Nellie Jane Tinnin. She lived in Alton, Illinois with her husband, Charles W. Rettig, in 1914 where my father, Clifford Clinton Rettig, was born. She was born in Madison Co., MO abt 1890; married in Bollinger Co., MO on September 7th, 1913 and died in Elm Creek, NE of influenza on March 08, 1920. Madison County does not have her birth certificate and thus I cannot find her parents' names. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Their address at the time of my father's birth was: 1222 Union St., Alton, IL. If the original house still exists and someone would be willing to take a picture and send it to me, I would be very, very appreciative. I will be happy to reimburse you for your time and expense. I do have one picture of Nellie which I will be happy to forward if it might help. Thank you all, Pat Rettig-Green

Marge, my great grandfather was James N. Patton, md. Amanda Tuggle in Stewart Co, TN. They are listed in the 1850 Stewart Co, TN census, but then I can not find them again. Does your Isaac Patton have a James N. Patton in his family tree? Anne
Tim, You might call or write the Hayner Public Library in Alton, Illinois. They have historical records there and I know there were quite a few books on the Alton Prison. I was visiting back in Alton last month and spent many days at the library doing genealogical research. While I was there, a couple came in to search the records looking for an ancestor who had been a guard at the prison too. I don't have the library address handy and I live in Florida, but Alton has a webpage and I believe the address is there, as well as an article about the prison and a list of confederate prisoners who died at the prison. The webpage is at: http://www.altonweb.com (They also put online the current obituaries for Alton and surrounding areas.) You might also find this of interest, I came across it while going through old newspapers in the library at Carrollton, Illinois and jotted it down: The Carrollton Gazette, Saturday January 18, 1862, Page 2, Column 1 of Volumn 16 No. 28: "The Alton penitentiary will be converted into a military prison, Gen. Halleck having notified parties at Alton to have the building prepared for the reception of the 1200 prisoners lately captured by Gen. Pope's command." For the best info on the Federal Prison in Alton, contact Don Huber at: altontwp@ezl.com. He gave a talk at our last genealogy meeting and he was great. Also, check out this site: "altonweb.com" --click on "local history", then the Civil War era. Don is very knowledgeable about this subject and says he gets e-mails every day about this subject.

Which Catholic Church was in existence in Fosterburg in 1840? I think Augustus was killed in the Civil War and is buried in the National Cemetery in Vicksburg, and that's why you don't see him on the 1873 atlas. He had Maurath relatives in Ridge Prairie - Bethel District and in Millstadt (both in St.Clair County). The name was really botched up in spelling because of their German/French accents. You wouldn't believe some of the ways is was spelled. Anyhow, I would really appreciate it if you could let me know which Church a Catholic family from Fosterburg would have attended in 1840. Thanks again so very much. If you go to this address and scroll down to "Determining Location", you can get a map showing Counties, Townships and Ranges in Illinois. It uses Adobe Reader which is downloadable there. Everyone looking at Illinois land sales will want to check this out: http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/archives/data_lan.html#location It is helpful to read (or print out) this page as it explains the meaning of the legal descriptions found in the land sale records. Then click on "Download the Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales map (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 or later)." Maggie
Are there tax records back as far as 1850, if so where are they kept? Marge
My gggrandfather, Isaac PATTON, was issued a land patent on June 10, 1850 for land described as NENE, sec 22, Twp 6-N, Range 5-W, Fract sect. N, 3rd Principal Meridian in Madison County. Could someone please translate that information into an actual parcel number or tell me where I can get the parcel number? Marge mncarr1996@aol.com
Good Morning Everyone, I just joined this list. I am looking for any information on the surnames LUEKER, WITTE, or BERNHARDT. Each of them have individual Madison County histories that eventually meet in Fayette County, Illinois. Any information on these would be gladly appreciated. Regards, --Jon from Philadelphia
Hello folks, I'm new to this list, and was wondering if anyone knew how to find out the name of a town simply from the township number listed on a census? I'm trying to find out which town Augustus MOURAT (MAURATH) lived in. He was listed on the 1850 Madison County census on page 414, and the township was listed as 6N9W. No town name was given. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks so much! John L. Maurath conlaeth@juno.com ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
