I agree it would be nice to have more records, such as Bond Co. IL, but I'm sure it takes a lot of work. I appreciate the web page and I'm sure, with others help, they will be able to get more on for researchers. Angela
I have been asking the same questions about the society. I have written letters repetively to the PO box and have never heard a thing. Please give us some help and just maybe we can help them.
I am an active member of MCGS, editor of The Stalker (the quarterly publication), and web master for the society's web page. I read with interest the messages regarding MCGS and I can say that without a doubt we are always looking for people to help with various projects. We are currently seeking a chairman for the Publications Committee, and I can always use articles for The Stalker, and suggestions and information for the web page. Any of this can sent to me by email at marwes@madisontelco.com or by snail mail to: Madison County Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 631, Edwardsville, IL 62025-0631. I know the web site needs to be improved, and am working on it. I am always interested in knowing what you want to see on it. I also attended the FGS conference in St. Louis including Cyndi Howell's lectures on society web sites and came away with many ideas. By a mere coincidence(?), there is a board meeting tonight for MCGS and I will be bringing a copy of the email with me for discussion. Thanks Mary Westerhold
Alton State Hospital was open in the 1920's I think. They took in all types of mental illness - both adult and children. I did volunteer work there when I lived in Alton. There was also a sanitarium on the road between Edwardsville, Illinois and Glen Carbon. I know it was at least that old and was originally built for TB. I know the state hospital is still open - it's on route 140 between Alton and Cottage Hills. Not sure about the one in Edwardsville but will email a relative who lives there and see what information I can find and let you know. Nancy
TO THE MADISON COUNTY LIST and MADISON COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY: I am writing the Madison County List in hopes of reaching some the members of the Madison County Genealogical Society and bring a rather distressing situation to light. Illinois and Madison and St. Clair Counties were well represented at the recent Conference in St. Louis. One of the main topics of this group was the unhappy situation at the Madison County Genealogical Society. I have been a member since it began about 20 years ago. At one time we had over 400 members, many active local members and always 60-75 at the monthly meeting. There appears to have been a substantial number of "non renewals" as the 1998 Fall Quarterly lists only about 100 local members. There are in addition about 30 local life members. What seem to be the problem and what can long time members do to improve the situation? Any suggestions? I found what I appeared to me to be a problem in the library account when I did the audit for several Treasurers for different years and made suggestions but that was a few years ago. Those of us who were active workers, officers, etc. in those early growing years are very concerned, especially after some of the remarks I heard at the conference. We worked hard during those years and I, for one, hate to see our organization founder when most others are increasing in size and importance. Although I have not been active in the Madison County Society since I went into the chairs at the Illinois State Society, I would be glad to help in any way. I am sure others would step forward, if they are asked. Does the Society want help or are they happy to become a small club with a few select members? I don't know who or how many are on the Madison County List. Therefore in the interest of promoting the MCGS I am sending a copy of this letter via S-mall to the officers of the MCGS and a few other appropriate people. Please send me your opinion!! I am new to the list and seeking the parents and/or siblings of Edmund Beall. He was born ca 1791 in MD; married 22 Jun 1813 to Elizabeth Hines in Washington, Co, MD. They lived in Cincinnati, OH from 1819 to 1837. Edmund was a cabinet maker, and moved his family to Alton City, Madison Co, IL as shown in 1840 and 1850 census. Could Edmund be the son of Basil and Arianna Beall and brother of William Brook Beall? Thanks for any information on Edmund Beall. Jim Beall
Alton State Hospital was and still is located on Hiway 140 between Alton city limits and Cottage Hills. There was also, at one time, the Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Edwardsville, Illinois. I believe it is closed down now. ----- Original Message ----- From: GAYLORD BROOKS <gkjabrooks@yahoo.com> To: <ILMADISO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 30, 1999 8:30 AM Subject: Re: Alton, IL > I worked at a State Mental Hosp. just outside of Alton > in 1964. Denise, Use GNIS for locating villages, cemeteries, hills, etc. <http://mapping.usgs.gov//www/gnis/gnisform.html> Fill in the form using "populated place" for the type of feature and fill in county and state. You will go directly to a map and "zoom in" a few times. I frequently use GNIS to locate cemeteries, small villages, "....corners", etc. You can also print these maps for your notebook. I worked at a State Mental Hosp. just outside of Alton in 1964. I think it was toward Bethalto. That's all I remember right now. --- Robbo1965@aol.com wrote: > Does anyone know of the names of any Sanatoriums > that might have been opened > in the Alton, IL. area in the early 1920's? > > Thank you, > Cathy > > > ==== ILMADISO Mailing List ==== > Search this list's archived messages! > http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl > Search the Rootsweb Resources Page for Madison > County! > Includes several Madison Co search engines! > http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/IL/Madison/ > > __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I noticed that some folks with the surname of Sherbut live in Collinsville. It's a stretch, but I'm wondering if they are related to the Von Sherbuts who came from Germany to Wisconsin and changed the family name to Sherpy. Pat B.
If Madison County Genealogical Soc. could get records up to compair with other counties, I would be more than willing to help. It's sad when you see the web pages some Counties and Cities have and than you look for Madison County. Arlene Boner - Granite City

Just a thought.>>>>>>> Carol Carol, Thank you very much, I never thought of going to AOL member directory for answers. As always this list has great ideas. Cathy

Does anyone know of the names of any Sanatoriums that might have been opened in the Alton, IL. area in the early 1920's? Thank you, Cathy

I am glad to hear that they do comply. I went to Burke Funeral Home in Alton, Illinois while I was there on vacation in July. They told me they would send me the information I was seeking. I still have not heard from them. ----- Original Message ----- From: Kelli Barton <barton22@earthlink.net> To: <ILMADISO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 29, 1999 7:05 PM Subject: Re: Elias-Smith Funeral Homes > Hello List, > > FYI > I had no problem getting information from Elias-Smith Funeral Home.
