    1. [ILMADISO-L] Borchwardt
    2. Good morning. Can you help? We can't find JOACHIM BORCHWARDT's birth place in Germany or Prussia. He is buried in St. Johns United Church of Christ, Granite City, Madison County. His grave stone says died Dec 31, 1885, born July 21, 1842. We believe from other information that the birth date MAY be calculated from age at death, namely 43 years, 5 months, 10 days. He applied for naturalization in 1873 and was naturalized in 1876. He signed that he gave up any allegiance to the "Emperor of Germany." The application says that he had been in Madison county for about three years, thus would have come about 1870. The 1880 census lists him as being from "Prussia." Some references are for Joseph instead of Joachim. There are christenings in the St. Johns United Church of Christ for children in 1872 and 1875 which lists the mother (wife of Joachim) as Christina Schmidt. Christina died sometime between 1880 - 1884, Joachim (sometimes Joseph) married (in St. Louis) again 30 June 1884 to Anna Elizabeth Biesterfeldt Curiously there is another Christina Borchwardt buried in the St. Johns graveyard. She was born and died (as an infant) in 1867. She is in a different plot than Joachim. OK? With that as background does anyone in the Madison Co. community have any clues to immigration of Joachim, or other similar or related families, or church groups, or, or, or . . .? Thanx for any help ================================ Don Dickason Searching for family names: Dickason, Hamilton, Cadwal(l)ader, Wisely, Steinberg, Borchward(t), Biesterfeld(t), Blair

    3. Yes, Second Street was renamed Broadway which became the main thoroughfare in Alton for some time. Walnut Street no longer exists at its previous location. The streets are numbered streets from Broadway, Third, Fourth, etc. There is no First Street in Alton. 2. Debbi Geer
    3. As a general follow-up to Scott's request about 2nd Street being the former name of the now Broadway, there are several streets which have changed names through the years. One that comes to mind is the now Royal Street. In former days I believe it had a name which started with the letter "T". My gr-grandparents lived on this street and when it changed to Royal, I learned that they really didn't move at all. This is probably true in towns around the country. Don't think that the family moved when in reality the street name could have been changed and the family was still in the same ol' house. Best bet is when a street doesn't appear on today's map, then locate a map of the town around the period in question. Debbi Geer __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. Re: [ILMADISO-L] Germany families
    2. Frank Geppert
    3. Gail, There are many variations in the spelling of Göppert/Geppert/Goeppert. I have found some germany data bases that spelled the surname all three different ways in the same family. The MILAN passenger list just spelled it Goppert without the umlaut. GERMANS TO AMERICA spelled it Coppert. As all records were handwritten at that time, it would be easy for the recorder to write what he thought he saw or heard. I am leaning toward someone who probably stayed in the St. Louis area. 1. [ILMADISO-L] Village of origination
    2. Frank Geppert
    3. I am searching for the village of origination of my great grandfather (Frank Geppert/Franz Göppert) who arrived at the Port of New Orleans in December 1851. He sailed aboard the MILAN out of the port of Bremen. His records only say Germany and Prussia. He immigrated to the metropolitan St. Louis area. First settling on a farm in Madison County, and later being a saloon keeper in East St. Louis, St. Clair County. He must have had contact with residents of that area before emigrating. I would like to hear from any one whose ancestors emigrated from Germany to the greater St. Louis area from 1840 to 1855. The purpose is to get their villages. This may help me in my search, as his ships passenger list only says Germany. His naturalization papers only say that he was giving up allegiance to the King of Prussia. Thanks Frank Geppert <[email protected]>

It has been thought safe to go to a web page but if you click on this "web url" you find out it is a bad attachment not a safe web site. myparty.yahoo.com So, DO NOT click on an attachment which looks like a web page site. 3. Also, if you haven't done an LDS person search, I did one for the birth of Zelma Kaiser and found several. Spellings varied to Selma and Keiser and Kizer. However the ones found where mostly from Ohio but if her birthdate is needed, this might be something for you to check. One of those listed MIGHT be her. Obviously, you cannot do a marriage search after 1900 because of privacy concerns. (Unless the 1900 date has been moved forward...not sure).
