I'm looking for ideas as to how to find out in what part of Madison County my g-g-maternal grandparents (Arnold WOLF and Eliza ROSS) were married in July 1866. According to the Madison County marriage record (Book 6, Page 204, Certificate # 180) the "Official" was J. Padon., Mg. Arnold Wolf has been elusive in Madison only finding naturalization record and then the marriage. Eliza Ross lived in the O'Fallon area prior to the marriage and I'm trying to connect the two! Any help as to where they were married would be great. Jo House
I have something you might find interesting about the Wolf family from St. Charles county, Mo. O'fallon Missouri is just west of St. Charles about 12 miles.. Now if your Wolf family has "any" connection to the little town of Hamburg, Mo you might want to contact me.. Hamburg no longer exist as the Goverment took all the land, including several small towns around Hamburg, Mo. This all happened during the second world war...All in all those Germany folks lived on those farms for over 150 yrs and on last account there was 23 cemeteries left behind and the Goverment agree to maintain and keep them up,,alas..no way, they are left in ruin and to make matters even worse they won't let anyone on certain parts of the land to look... So if you have any Wolf family in that area I "might" be able to at least point you in a direction to help you... Debbi, Thanks for the tip on the obits in Alton papers. I'm afraid that any link to Coffees in Missouri would be very far back, but almost anything is possible. Anyway, here's what I know: 1. William Joel COFFEE (b. 15 Apr 1826 in Ala, d. 13 Sep 1885 in Dexter, TX) married Elizabeth Ann MOORE (b. 16 Apr 1833 in Nashville, TN, d. 13 Dec 1907 in Province, OK) There's much conjecture as to William's ancestry; at least one researcher with whom my mother corresponds is convinced that he is a grandson of Cleveland COFFEE (1780 - 1843) who came from a long line in Virginia. Without sources, I'm withholding judgment. Family legend was that he came directly from Ireland and landed in Virginia but he listed his birthplace as Alabama on the 1850 census. I never heard any names of brothers or sisters he might have had, when my aunts & uncles old enough to have remembered hearing such things were still alive. He did serve in the Confederate Army (12th Ala Infantry Regt) and told stories of his long walk home (probably from Virginia since that unit was in Lee's army) after the war. Some time after the war he left for Texas to find a homestead. About 1884 the rest of the family moved to Texas, and by 1892 all but one son had moved into Indian Territory. William's sons were: John Jeams COFFEE (my great-grandfather) Joel William COFFEE Daniel Webster COFFY Joseph A. COFFEE Harrison COFFEE Charles COFFEE Robert Richard COFFEE Leonard COFFEE John's sons were: Joel William Leonard COFFEE John Denson COFFEE James Arthur COFFEE (my grandfather) Oscar Otto COFFEE (never married) Rufus Moore COFFEE If any of these names sound vaguely familiar, then this may be of help to you. Otherwise, I hope I haven't bored you with details interesting only to me. Thanks again for helping me out with information in Alton. John Coffee
Could some kind soul do a lookup for me in the 1900 census? Looking for the Abram Sedrick family. Any and all help appreciated. He was living in Venice township in 1880 Glen A. Sedrick http://www.sedricks.com http://www.butlercogenealogy.com http://basicgenealogy.com
John None of the obits from the Alton Telegraph are online. The only ones that are at the present time are those in the archives of The Telegraph (originally Alton Telegraph, then Alton Evening Telegraph, and now The Telegraph). The website for The Telegraph: www.thetelegraph.com Although a different address will appear when connecting. The obits are easily found. The archives only goes back in the late part of 2000, but at least it's a start. On a different note John, I know of two different families of Coffee. One was in the Bunker Hill area and connected to the Wood family for which a great deal of research has been made and published. The other is a Coffee family that lived in the Bridgeton/Maryland Heights MO area back around the turn of the 20th century (early 1900's). This family's patriarch was Daniel H. Coffee who married Annie Jane Martin daughter of Andrew Jackson Martin and Mathilda Dismang. Contact me directly about your Coffee ancestors. Haynor also microfische index of the Telegraph from 1970 to 1994. The Telegraph Index books currently go up to 1939. Everytime I've been at the library lately one of the employees is reading microfilm and writing...I finally asked her the other day what she was doing. She said they are in the process of doing the index from 1940 to 1970 and it will be placed on microfilm. Lets give them a great big thanks for what they are doing. Barbara

Amoung your Handley/Hanley ancestors, do you have any Ryan connections? In a letter from my great grandmother to my grandmother, she mentions having seen "your aunt Ryan". Letter written in Staunton, Macoupin Co. after 1900. Another "clue" in my Handley family is the middle names of the children, Edward Gunning was the first born, Charles Austin and Margaret Cleveland. These names do not appear in the family of the mothers, so I have thought they may have been from the Handley side. No, Sharon, I don't think so. The index books are only at the Belle Street main library. I forgot to mention yesterday that after you look in the index books and get the date, page and column, the microfilm is in the cabinet immediately below the books, categorized by date. They have two readers at the library.
