    3. Best bet -- check the 1860 census. There was a state prison in Alton, I believe. There was also most likely a county jail or two. 3. I've heard the expression also. My late mother used to refer to Indiana Hoosiers, Illinois Suckers, and Missouri Pukes. (She was born in St Clair County IL and raised in the St Louis MO area.) I'd be interested in the origin of all 3 names. Hoosier is a familiar term. But the other 2 were news to me. This e-mail is the first time I heard anyone refer to IL Suckers since my mom died years ago. 3. Laura A good friend of my family worked at and retired from Shell Oil Co. I believe they had a newsletter they sent out to all the employees and retirees. You may want to check with Shell Oil Co (not sure if they still go by that name as the Wood River plant has been sold twice in recent years) and see if they have copies in their archives. You may be able to get copies from them. You may also want to contact the Wood River plant and see if they happen to have copies for historical purposes. 1. [ILMADISO-L] Information Request
    2. Laura J Kelahan
    3. Any Good Samaritan's Out There? The surname I am dealing with is Kelahan, from the Granite City area. I have been told that my great grandfather, John R. Kelahan was the 1st President of the Park Board and helped in the building of Wilson Park as well as St. Elizabeth's Hospital. He also owned an electrical company, Peerless, which gave light to such items as City Hall, the High School, Washington Theater and "The White Way" on 19th street. Co-owner in the electric company was his son Joseph R. Kelahan. After they lost the electric company during the depression, Joseph went on to the Shell Oil Refinery in Woodriver becoming a leader in the local union and on to a position of arbiter for the A.F. of L. across the US. What I would be interested in is any newspaper articles, pictures, or information about John & Joe's involvements in Granite City or Shell Oil. I am more than willing to reimburse for time spent and copies. I live near Buffalo, NY so it is extremely difficult to spend time in Madison Cty., IL to find this information. I am also a member of the board of the Niagara County, NY Genealogical Society so I can perform any reciprocal work if anyone has questions on ties in this area. Thanks in advance for any activity on these subjects. Laura J. Kelahan 172 High Street #4 Lockport, NY 14094 (716) 434-8556 [email protected] PS I just sent last week my membership application to the Madison County Society. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 2. Nancy, I live in Troy and that cemetery is very close to me. I can't answer your question about the cemetery being active. It is very small so I would think not. We have a historical society at the local library I can find out for you. If you want me to pay the cemetery a visit send me the names of your ancestors. Warmest Regards, Jill

Hi, At the risk of repeating an old question - I just found ancestors in the Decatur County Geneological Society publication listing for a cemetery "on south Main Street, Troy, Madison County, Ilinois". Is this an active cemetery? Does anyone have a contact address for getting records? Thanks, Nancy

    2. Edna
    3. I notice that Madison County Genealogical Society has a lot of Cemetery Transcription Books for sale and wondered if anyone who had copies of any of them would be so kind to look up a surname for me. I would purchase several, but I don't know which Cemetery would be my choice. Name is Marie (Mary) SAUER. She was listed in the 1900 Madison County, Venice Township, Il Census. After that have lost her. Per new information, her husband Adolph remarried and moved to PA about 1900. Perhaps my great aunt Marie Sauer died in childbirth or shortly afterwards. She had a daughter, Cecelia, born about 1898 and a son Adolph Jr. about 1900. Marie Schoffra SAUER was from a Catholic family if that helps. Thanks so much for any and all assistance you can give. 1. [ILMADISO-L] 1860 Census Lookup
    2. Can someone do a 1860 census lookup for me? I am looking for a Charles Miller/Mueller. His wife's name was Sophia and they probably had a young daughter named Mary. They should be located somewhere in Madison Co. It is possible that Charles may be named "Carl". Mike Schubert [email protected]

    3. Elinor Here's what Carrie Braasch's granddaughter Carol Mahoney DuFrain wrote about her and her family in the Bunker Hill area history book which was published in April 1993. The photo referred to in the article is that of Carrie. Carol is also the granddaughter that is referred to as being raised by her grandmother. Hope this helps you with some connection. Debbi Geer Carrie Braasch When my grandmother's name is mentioned in this area, someone usually recalls a time when "Carrie was there." She was involved with many families on the occasion of the birth of a daughter or son and in thi sway was an important part of the history of the area. This picture was probably taken around 1940 when she was well known for assisting Dr. Bley and Dr. Hess with home deliveries and the aftercare for mother and baby. According to a record kept by her, she cared for over 350 babies over a 23-year period. The first baby noted was Irma Bartels in 1921 and the last was Joyce Adcock in 1944. There were some years in the 1930's when she helped with as many as 40 in one year. She became a widow with three small children in 1917 when my grandfather, Charles, died. She moved to Bunker Hill in 1929. Her children are Dorothy Mahoney, Litchfield; Marcella Meinecke, Staunton; and Otto Braasch (deceased), Staunton. She had four grandchildren and riased one of them from the age of three. She was also known for her beautiful quilts and for her work as a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She is fondly remembered by many for her kindnesses and "always being there" to lend a helping hand. Carrie died in the Lord in 1965 at the age of 80. A great-granddaughter she never knew bears her name. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Tax Center - online filing with TurboTax http://taxes.yahoo.com/
