Hi Vickie, Piasa, Illinois is a small town just northeast of Alton, Illinois about 15 miles. There isn't much there anymore but a railroad track. It is located on Route 16 between the towns of Brighton and Shipman, Illinois. If I can be of further help, please let me know. There is a tiny town named Piasa, Illinois, in Macoupin County, on state route 16 (runs east and west in the Piasa area), very near the Jersey County line. It is north of Madison County. Piasa, Illinois does have a post office, a few churches, a funeral home, and maybe one or two other commercial activities.. There is a Piasa township, Piasa lake, and other features with the area named Piasa. Maybe the Piasa that you are looking for used to be in Madison County. Check on the history of Macoupin County which came partly from Madison County. There is a Piasa in Macoupin County. Macoupin borders Madison on the north. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/m_shipmn.htm#piasa May not be what you are looking for but the history of Piasa on that page might help to find out whether it is the Piasa you are looking for. There is a present day Piasa with a postal zip code of 62079. You might write the Postmaster there and get some info. Bill D.
I am searching for ancestors and relatives for Anson Barnett, farmer, b. 1848 in Illinois. The 1900 census shows him and his family in Hamel Twp. He resided their with his wife Mary Elizabeth McClure, children Jesse Ann b. 1892 and Jim Thomas b. 1895. Anson and Mary were married in Macon County in 1890. The family moved to Strathmore, Alberta in 1909 with Mary's sister Ann McClure. Descendents live there today.
In February I corresponded with a Vickie Liles.who was interested in finding some of her ZERWAS family. At that time I was out of the country and unable to help. My husband is a relative to the ZERWAS family and would like to contact her. If you are still on the list, please let us know. We have tried to send messages but they keep bouncing. Perhaps you have changed addresses. At any rate, we are now available and anxious to help. Sharlene
Hi all, It's nice to be on top of current genealogical developments from the perspective of various points of the country. I've just added a genealogy newsfeed to Obituary Central http://www.obitcentral.com that can be access directly at http://www.obitcentral.com/obitsearch/gen_news.htm The newsfeed updates daily and is quite interesting reading. I've already picked up some leads from an article about a historical society. Hope this helps. Good Day to All, 2 questions for you today -- Is there such a place called "Madison, Illinois"? and how would I find a death date/notice on someone who was "killed". I have this person listed in the 1900 Census and then my gg grandmother is widowed by 1910, so I guess the death took place between this time. Any suggestions? Thanks
Yes, Madison is just south of granite City, in the southwest corner of Madison County. maybe 2 miles north of the county line. Check this web site out http://www.vitalrec.com/il.html IF he died in Illinois they should have it or it is still with the County Clerk Kent ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bratsveen Leroyce E GS-05 67SOS/CCS" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, April 30, 2002 8:47 AM Subject: [ILMADISO-L] Death Information > Good Day to All, > 2 questions for you today -- Is there such a place called "Madison, > Illinois"? and how would I find a death date/notice on someone who was > "killed". Hi, No, the Catholic Children's Home in Alton is not an orphanage any more, but is used as a school for problem children. My husband and his brothers and sisters lived at the Home from time to time. He and I went to visit it last year. They said they still have the records of the children who had lived there. Hope this helps. Judy
Hello List, I subsrcribed to the list because I have questions. Gee, go figure LOL Armstrong Standard Service Station on Central Ave. We are looking for info on the Armstrong line that owned it. My husbands elderly Uncle Paul Keller remembers an Aunt Lela Armstrong who's husband owned this service station. He also remembers an Aunt Lela Gottlob who owned a grocery store on the corner of Sula and Washington. Lela was married to William Gottlob. Anyone know of either store or families? Also, my husbands mother and sisters were in the Catholic Childrens Home for awhile in Alton. Does anyone know if it's still an orphanage and if so are there still records that can be looked into? Thanks in advacne for any help. It will be greatly appreciated! Donna in MD
Thanks for all those who shared information. I was fascinated, especially by the term "Missouri Puke." I'm just as happy being a badger. Karen

My great grandfather, Heinrich (Henry) Determann, came to the USA from Breslau, Germany and according to the 1900 Census landed here in 1854 at New Orleans, settled for awhile in Missouri, and then to Madison County. I am searching for the exact date he landed and for the name of the ship he came on. I have consulted the volumes, Germans to America to no avail. Can anyone out there help me? Sincerely, Bill Determan

TN but was unable to find him in any 1860 Census Until today when I went through an 1860 IL Madison Co Census book and found him listed: James Hoda 31 years old White Male Daylaborer b. AL MURDER WOW Murder Has anyone ever come across any Murder that listed him as the culprit? I have found a Hodo family living in St. Clair Co. I am wondering if he commited the murder there and was sent to prison in Alton? Sorry for Rambling I am just excited.
