    2. Hi Denise! The Richter family you're looking for, are they from Collinsville around 1910? I am told my great-great-aunt married a Richter. I know she grew up in COllinsville and was born in the late 1800s. Sheryl

    1. [ILMADISO-L] Armstrong, Gotthardt, Gottlob, Keller, Slagle, Gooch, Goodpasture, Biggs, Fricke
    2. Donna & Bob
    3. Thank you!! :-) We are looking for information on several Madison County families. Armstrong, Gotthardt, Gottlob, Keller, Slagle, Gooch, Goodpasture, Biggs, Fricke The Armstrong family is tied to our Gotthardt family in more ways than we recently discovered. I found our Gotthardt family on the 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 census. I have a naturalization paper, 2 copies of the birth registers of Madison Co., and a copy from the National Archives of Civil War Pension papers and a copy of Civil War Roster cards. We've been talking to our Uncle Paul Keller who was born in 1924 in Alton. He remembers having 2 Aunt Lela's. One being Lela Armstrong who married WIlliam Gottlob. He rememebrs going to the VFW Post 1308 of which he is still a member and greeting his Gottlob cousins. Lela Armstrong Gottlob operated a Grocery store on Washington he remembered going too. Uncle Paul also talks of an Aunt Lela Armstrong. Married to Paul Armstrong. They operated the Armstrong Standard Service Station on Central. He remembers going there also. He said after Paul Armstrong died the station was sold and Lela then remarried to Edwin Cox. On the 1920 census, my husbands Grandmother Dorothy Louise Gotthardt and her sisters Mary K. Gotthardt and Hellen M. Gotthardt were found living with William Gottlob, wife Lela, their children. They were listed as Nieces. Also living there was mother in law Sarah J. Biggs. Uncle Paul said that he was related to Aunt Lela. Which means theoretically that the childrens mother Lois Unknown and Lela Armstrong Gottlob were sisters and in order for there to be an Uncle Paul and Aunt Lela Armstrong that would theoretically mean Paul was a brother to Lela and Lois. I found a P.E. Armstrong with wife Lela on the 1920 census. But I have nothing to tie any of these people together except the memories of Uncle Paul. We need help with our Alton families. Also, does anyone know of the address you write to if you want copies of records from the Catholic Orphanage that used to be in Alton?? My husbands mother and siblings (Uncle Paul) were all raised there. I'm going to include a genelaogy report as its so much easier for me than typing it all in. Thank you and have a good evening!! 1. [ILMADISO-L] An Old Genealogy Scam Reappears
    2. Gloria Frazier
    3. Cheryl passed this on to us so I am passing on. If it will save one person some money so they can pay for xerox copies of marriages, probate, etc, then good. gf ----------------------------------------------------- >From Dick Eastman's newsletter: - An Old Genealogy Scam Reappears There is a Web site that sends out unsolicited e-mails offering to give you access to the world's largest genealogy database for only $44.95. At first, that might sound like a good deal. However, the e-mails don't mention the source of this "world's largest" genealogy database. It is the Internet and is free to everyone -- except for the gullible folks who fall for these e-mails. What the e-mails do not tell you is that your money only buys you access to a list of links. These links on the Web site present the other sites inside HTML frames, making it look like the other sites are a part of original site's "service." They do this without telling you that the contents are not created by them, but actually are the intellectual property of the originators. FamilyDiscovery.com was one source of these misleading e-mails. The site was in business for a year or so and gained notoriety within the genealogy community. Their Web site disappeared recently, apparently being shut down by the Internet service provider that hosted the online "service" after complaints by many users. However, a new Web site has recently appeared, operating a site that looks like FamilyDiscovery.com but under a different name. It appears that the owner of the new Web site is the same person who owned the earlier one. The new Web site is Genealogy- Developments.com. The new Web site proclaims that you can "Search Over 23 Billion Genealogy Records Right From This Website." That claim is absolutely correct. Of course, you can search the same 23 billion records without going to that Web site and without paying $44.95. If you read the fine print at http://www.genealogy-developments.com/faqs.html, you will note that it says, "We do not offer access to a database of records but we do offer the ability to search billions of online records spanned across the Internet." The reality is that you can find all those links, and more, elsewhere on the Web. I suspect that most of them are available on Cyndi's List at http://www.cyndislist.com. Of course, Cyndi's List is free of charge. There are a couple of "watchdog sites" that watch for Web sites like FamilyDiscovery.com and Genealogy-Developments.com. The International Blacksheep Society of Genealogists maintains a "Genealogy Hall of Shame" at: http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/familydiscovery.htm. The Watchdog Committee maintains the "Genealogical Web Site Watchdog" at: http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm. You might also want to check Cyndi's List at: http://www.cyndislist.com/myths.htm#Consumer. If you ever have a question about an online genealogy "service," I'd suggest that you check these sites before spending any money.

The Telegraph - Sunday - April 28, 2001 SMALLPOX ISLAND MONUMENT IS DEDICATED The playing of "Dixie", the flying of Confederate flags and the laying of wreaths highlighted a ceremony Saturday honoring Confederate prisoners of war who died in Alton. The event was the dedication of the Civil War Monument to remember the Confederate inmates of the Alton Federal Prison who died of smallpox and other contagious diseases. It was held on a rainy, chilly morning in the Lincoln Shields Recreation Area in the Riverlands Environmental Demonstration Area in West Alton. Guests were shielded from the cold wind and rain by a tent. "This is our pledge to the Southern patriots," said Terry Norris, archaeologist/historian of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District, which funded the granite monument. The monument is engraved with the names of 233 Confederate soldiers who died of smallpox after they were transferred from the prison to an island in the Mississippi River, which became known as Smallpox Island, including one woman, also are on the monument. The soldiers and others who died on the island were buried in trench graves. Smallpox Island later washed away, but the graves were discovered in 1935, when workers digging for the original Alton Dam unearthed them. The five-sided monument was erected last year in West Alton, across the Mississippi from Alton, and its surrounding stone platform was completed during the winter. Alton Township Supervisor Don Huber, master of ceremonies said the Confederate POWs "died for what they believed in at the time." Civil War re-enactors, represented by the 9th Missouri Volunteer Infantry and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans of Granite City, took part in the ceremony. They acted as color guards and placed wreaths at the monument in honor of the dead soldiers. Confederate re-enactors fired a salute. Nine members of the Roxana High School Band, led by music teacher Nancy Sabaj played "The Star Spangled Banner", "God Bless America", and the Confederacy's theme song of "Dixie." A trombonist played taps. Col. Michael R. Morrow, St. Louis District engineer, delivered a brief talk, reminding the audience that America recently suffered the loss of more than 3000 citizens "in a bloody terrorist strike, and we grieve for them and their families" "Today we are gathered to remember some of the more than 618,000 who died in the Civil War, the War Between the States", Morrow said, "Some historians say that number should be as high as 700,000. Union losses totaled 360,000. 250,000 of those to disease, like the cause of death of those whose names are on this monument. Confederate forces lost 258,000 - 164,000 to disease. Morrow said the fighting in the Civil War was "savage". He said that at Wilson's Creek, MO, a little-known battle, Northern and Southern forces lost 1200 men in a single day, a family from Christianburg, VA, lost 18 members and the lst Main Heavy Artillery lost 635 of its 900 men in seven minutes. He said the Civil War pitted not just states against states, but families who fought among themselves, brothers against brothers. " But we as a people, north and south of a line that divided us for four brutal years survived as these United States of America," Morrow said, "So today we gather not just to mourn the loss of these victims of war, but to celebrate each of their lives. In the end, neither the Union nor the Confederacy prevailed; rather, our nation outlasted the divisiveness of men for the future of mankind. God Bless these men who gave their lives and God Bless the United States of America.".... One descendant of a Confederate soldier who died of smallpox in Alton was present at the ceremony. Rex Cash, 43, of Choctaw, Okla, said his grand-uncle, Alfred Cash of Arkansas, enlisted in May 1862 and served in the 37th Arkansas Infantry, fighting in two battles. He was captured in 1863 and brought to the Alton prison. "He died less than three months after he was captured," Cash said. "This ceremony today was good, and it was important for me to be here. Alfred was only 19 years old when he enlisted and his family had no grave to grieve on, no closing, no funeral rite." "I felt it was a family obligation for me to be here. I grew up with his story. Those men endured the weather, so I didn't want to let a little bit of rain stop me. It's my way of giving something back to them."
