I am trying to find information on my Kreft/Kraft and Doehring family lines in Madison Co., IL. My great grandparents both left Germany in 1856, and met on board the ship New Orleans, heading for the port of New Orleans. He was Ernst J. Kreft (now spelled Kraft), and she was Sophia Charlotte Doehring. They married in Madison Co., IL, on Jan 13, 1861, so I assume she may have had family there. The ship passenger list also lists her with a Caroline Doering, age 38, who might have been a relative. My Krafts moved on to homestead in Kansas in 1875. Would appreciate any leads. Thank You to everyone on the list for the info! :) Theresa
All U.S. newspaper addresses: http://www.n-net.com/ For all available newspapers on microfilm, put in Madison for the county and choose a state (city fine, too) here and should bring up a lot of listings for newspapers: http://web.library.uiuc.edu/asp/inp/mergeddatabase/search_form.asp This site will tell you how to have the newspapers on microfilm searched. (you must have a name, date and place to be searched). http://www.state.il.us/hpa/lib/Microfilm.htm Call or write for details of searching. The IL State Historical Library also has a site to search publications: http://www.rpls.ws/web2/tramp2.exe/log_in?setting_key=ilstatehistorical Put in Madison and search on a key word and see how many records there are available. You might want to Bookmark/Favorites these sites so you can easily get back to them. These urls may change at times. Please let me know if you find a new url for any of the sites. Goodluck. Does anyone know if the Granite City library has a web address or e-mail address. Bill Patterson
Hello! I am looking for any information on several construction workers that worked on a “Power House” that was built in Venice, Illinois circa 1926. I have been told that my father Sam PATTERSON and very likely his brothers (Elmer [Punch], James and Robert [Bud]) were employed as steel workers on this project. James eventually settled in Madison, where he was a Postmaster and also active in the American Legion. My father, Sam, fell while working on the Power House and broke his arm. Elmer participated in bare-knuckle prizefights, and he also was active in baseball. Are there any newspapers of that vintage or any organizations that would have any records pertaining to that era? Any photos or articles of the building under construction or any photos or articles of any accidents to construction workers while the building were under construction? Are there any City Directories or phone books of that vintage? Are there a web sites or address for any local libraries? If anyone can help me in my research or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it very much. Bill Patterson

I am currently researching my Whitney family roots in Madison County. My father, Philip Lloyd Whitney was born in Granite City in 1934 to Emmett Leroy Whitney and Fanny Susan Roberts Huff Whitney. Emmett's mother, Elisabeth Ann Linder Whitney had died in 1933 in Madison County. Also I am researching Henderson Hall who married Sarah Anna Whitney Donaldson. In 1900 my Great-great grandmother Amelia (Emily, Emealia) Whitney was living with them. Between 1900 - 1910 I believe she died (not found on 1910 or after census') but I don't know exactly when or where she is buried. There is a Amelia Ann Whitney listed on the state death index but sadly is was not her. I would love corresponding with others researching these families or anyone that can help in the search. Walshville is about 20 miles from Worden in Montgomery county. It is southeast of Litchfield. It is unlikely in 1899 that Frank having moved to Walshville and dying there would be returned to Worden for burial. There are several cemeteries in the Walshville area you might try. There is also the Omphgent Burying Ground in Worden if you haven't tried that for Elizabeth
I have been searching for some time now, trying to locate where my GG Grandparents are buried: Elizabeth Wenner Firle (1839 to abt 1875-1880) and Frank Firle (abt 1837 - April, 1899). The 1870 census shows them living in Omphgent Township where he was the blacksmith in Worden. The 1880 census shows only Frank and their children living in Omphgent Township. I have no knowledge of when Elizabeth died. Frank remarried in 1881 and, according to a notice in the Mt. Olive Herald, died in Walshville. If Frank and Elizabeth are buried together it may be somewhere in Omphgent Township. I have carefully searched through the first 9 volumes of the MCGS Cemetery Books and the only Firley I found was his son, buried in the Worden City Cemetery. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where and how I might continue searching for Frank and Elizabeth Firle? Many thanks for any help you can provide. Myra Dittes
Interesting -- my great-grandfather, George Fredrickson Savitz, owned and operated the Collinsville Coal and mining Co. in the 1890's. I have read a little about it in a history of Collinsville.
