    1. [ILMADISO-L] Tornado
    2. Sorry, forgot to paste! March 16, 1871 – Nashville Journal – TERRIBLE TORNADO One of the fiercest storms that ever visited this part of the country was that of last Wednesday afternoon. It was the most disastrous at East St. Louis where it was a perfect whirlwind, and very destructive. Many of the steamers in the harbor were severely crippled, smoke stacks blown down, and others became unmanageable and were driven ashore, or against the wharf-boats and for a time rendered useless. The top of the East St. Louis elevator was blown off; nearly all the depots blown away, while some took fire, especially the round-house of the C. A. & St. R. R., where several were killed or burned. The Southeastern depot was completely demolished and several men killed or severely wounded. The scaffolding on the east pier of the bridge was thrown down and forty men fell with it, some of whom were mortally wounded. Numerous houses were wrecked, and the contents of lumber yards hurled in every direction. On the Southeastern road cars were blown from the track in which were some of the citizens of Belleville and Mascoutah. Philip Schubkegel, of Mascoutah, received an ugly wound; John Thoma, John Papin and W. T. Kircher, of Belleville, were more or less injured. The number of killed and wounded it is impossible to determine. The number is large, however. One of the most incredible incidents related on undoubted evidence, was the lifting of a 32 ton locomotive from the track of the T. W. & W. R. R., and dropping it forty feet distant, not rolling it, but actually lifting it, without touching the intervening soil. The storm seemed to rage along the levee, reaching half way across the river on the west, and fair way across the island on the east. Considerable damage was done in Belleville, fences and chimneys blown down, while the roof of the house on south High street, owned by Mrs. Wm. C. Davis, was lifted completely off and one part deposited in the street and the other in an adjoining yard. The details of the storm at East St. Louis fill four or five columns of fine type in the St. Louis papers, and then no doubt, much remains unnoticed. It was probably the most disastrous storm that ever befell this part of the country.

    1. [ILMADISO-L] TORNADO 1871
    2. Good morning to all fellow listers, While doing some research last month at the library, I came across a few articles of interest from the 1871 Nashville Journal. This one is about a "Terrible Tornado" that roared through East St. Louis in March 1871. As the widow of a weather forecaster who specialized in this type of storm, I can say that this is a little early for tornadic activity, but they can form at any time of year if the conditions are right. To any who have contacted me for obits and such -- I am still having major back problems and can only sit for a few minutes at a time. I have every request printed and will go through the list as quickly as I can in the next two weeks. My time at the library is limited by my back, responsibilities to the children who live with me and full-time duties at work. Since Kinko's was just acquired by FedEx, I now must attend a class on FedEx shipping in April. My list of requests numbers over 30 at the moment. I do try and get all that I can for each person who writes and I do apologize for being slow -- but I'm thorough and I'm free, so I hope you'll continue to be patient. I will send a few more brief mentions in my next post. Donnell Redlingshafer Wisniewski

    1. [ILMADISO-L] Obit John and Etta Everts
    2. Dewey Everts
    3. One more favor, please. These are my Grandparents who raised me to age 16. I can't get the family to send me obits. Theky should be in the Edwardsville Intelligencer. Wrote to them, no answer. I have received so many favors from the same people that I had to ask them specifically all over again. Etta Everts died on February 3, 1960 and John Everts died on December 17, 1966. in New Douglas, Illinois, my place of birth. If any of my school chums or relatives are still living in Edwardsville, (Shirley, are you there?) you can get a copy at the Intelligencer, or at the Library. Also, I have almost completed my 3 years of research on my Everts/Crites family journal. If you are a descendant of Peter and Anna Maria Schulz Everts, (the Evers/Everts line, Hannover Kingdom), or Lukke Janssen Tieden, (Anna's mother's line) or the line of Abraham Crites,(of the Palatine Valley) or the Osterman line, I have all of those books. My journal is unpublished and IF you are a DESCENDANT, feel free to write me an Email. It takes a while for me to answer. I am 75 and on my last leg of my journey; going home. Rev. Dewey Leon Everts Jr.

    3. Dear Mary Jane, It is truly an act of kindness to go to so much trouble to amass all this information. I hadn't seen the 1930 Census. The information that I am seeking is for the time before they came to California. If the family tree has information on their ancestry, I would really like to have it. Thank you so much, Margie Newton

    1. [ILMADISO-L] Obituaries - Jersey, Macoupin, Greene, Madison counties

    3. Sorry if you get this message more than once. Marty Crull has contributed his huge obituary database, over 6,000 obits! These are now online on the Jersey County GenWeb page under "Jersey County Obituaries." While almost all of the obits have a Jersey County connection, there are a fairly large number of entries for Greene and Madison counties. Also Macoupin and Calhoun. Some are also people who moved and later died elsewhere in Illinois. Marty's database did not have any entries for surnames beginning with H, I, J or S. There are only a few for these surnames and they are limited to Jersey County. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iljersey/obits/Obituaries.htm Just for your information. Judy Griffin, Jersey County cc

    1. Re: [ILMADISO-L] Kreft/Kraft, and Doehring Family
    2. There were a Charles Doering who served in the Civil War from Belleville which is about 30 miles from here. There are also some Doehring's around as I see their name in the sports sections. Try Superpages.com people pages and enter the last name using Alton, Belleville, Edwardsville, granite city and St Louis.
