    3. Interesting! I have just finished re-writing my history of Polk township and am now working at re-writing my history of Halyard township. Pleasant Lemay entered 80 acres of ground from the government in section 36, Polk township in 1833. He entered another 80 acres in section 12, Hilyard township in 1835. Both pieces of ground about a mile apart. I assume the Hopewell church was a Baptist church. Was this church located somewhere near Old Plainview, the stagecoach change station in section 1, Hilyard township, on the Springfield Trace, now Stagecoach Road? The only thing I have been able to find in searching is this: "The United Baptist erected the first church in Polk township called the Liberty Baptist Church in section 35, Polk township in 1869 or 70. The membership had organized around 1830 and met in individual homes until they erected a church across the township line in (probably section 1) Hilyard township. Then in 1869 or 1870, they erected a new church in section 35, Polk township at a cost of $2,000. During the year 1870, the church listed a membership of 75 members. An addition was added to this church in 1892.This church burned in 1915. (It was located across the road from the Liberty school house, later known as the Dorman school house). Ministers of this church had been: Rev. Levi Mitchell, William Dorman, John R. Jones, David Elliet, Dorman Rhoads, Talmage Smith, J. J. Haycraft, Wesley Dorman, Grant Smirl,E.Perkins and George Hart. After the church burned, a new church, called the East Liberty Union Baptist church was built in section 25, Polk township.(near Lake Catatoga). A part of the membership in dispute, then transferred to the Plainview Baptist Church in Plainview. The East Liberty Union Baptist church was demolished by a tornado about 1926 and was not rebuilt. The membership at East Liberty disbanded and attended other churches. I would most like to know who the members were of the Hopewell Church. Another interesting note: In years past I noticed the old timers here all called the Mays Branch (creek), the Lemay's Branch. I always assumed it was named after Pleasant Lemay, a very early settler that settled in the area. Now I notice the maps call the creek Mays Branch. Could this have been a printing mistake in years past that has been carried on? Just wondering! Jim Frank ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert L. 3. Check out the following URL for members of Hopewell Primitive Baptist church. I think the URL is from the group that Robert L. Webb is a member of. Not positive. http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/FamHist-Macoupin.html A number of my ancestors are listed as members of the church including: CARROLL, ROSE, TAYLOR, LEMAY. Theu mostly lived near the Wheeler Cemetery near Lake Catotoga and Gillespie Lake. Larry Clark On Thu, Dec 17, 2009 at 9:04 PM, jim frank <frank10@frontiernet.net> wrote: > Interesting!
