I am guessing, too. I would consider the Public Domain Land sales timeframe since no one owned the land until they were on the PD land and paid for it. I didn't go thru all of the sales but I did see an 1857 public domain land sale for Macoupin County. The Public Domain Land sales are at the IL Archives site and I have intended for a "few" years to get the Macoupin sales on the Macoupin County ILGenWeb site......
