    3. Hello all, I was just informed that the Dugger Cemetery located in Carlinville is in dire condition. Weeds have covered it up, one of the stones was driven over by a truck on the farm, and it is very neglected. I don't know if anyone on this list might take pity on the cemetery and get some folks together to clean it up out of the kindness of their hearts, but it does seem a shame to allow the cemetery to degrade and turn to heaps of rubble. Perhaps this might be a good thing for the Macoupin Co Historical Society to do as a project? Carol Rio Vista CA

    3. Carol Suggest you have the person who gave you the information regarding the Dugger Cemetery to contact the county officials since it seems that someone is not aware of the IL state laws regarding cemeteries since about 1991.  Laws are not strict and other counties have been prosecuting accordingly.  I can remember some teens digging up a grave of a woman who had died about a month before and removed the casket from the grave just to get the skull.  This happened in Madison Co IL and believe me it hit the front page news.  The teens were given prison time as I recall and also a $10,000 fine each.  I don't believe they got what they wanted.  They told friends at school about what they did and luckily the other kids said something to their parents who in turn called the sheriff's dept since the cemetery was in the rural area of the county. 3. Carol, Why do you suggest the Macoupin Co Historical Society clean up the Dugger Cemetery AS A PROJECT?. The few active members in the Macoupin Co. Historical Society are all over the hill, 75 to 95 years of age and number less than ten dedicated members that voluntarily constantly work for the Society. We do good at just keeping our grounds here in Carlinville presentable and the Museum operating. I suggest that you contact your relatives and descendant of people buried in that cemetery to get together and have your own cleanup day. Or else you perhaps could donate money to hire someone locally to go in and clean the cemetery up. Think of all the other dozen and dozens of neglected old cemeteries in the county that need work to bring back to life. No way the Historical Society can go in and clean them up. " God helps he who helps themselves." I suggest, descendants of people buried in the Dugger cemetery, take the project on themselves, in honor and respect to ancestors buried there.
