I have been working on finding birth, death and burial dates and locations, family information, pictures and obituaries for each of the almost 1000 men who served in the 101^st Illinois Infantry, a Civil War unit assembled in Morgan County, Illinois. I now have the information that I have found on my web page at http://www.scattercreek.com/~normw <http://www.scattercreek.com/%7Enormw> My biggest problems were names. 1. Who was the wife? If a widow filed for pension, I could rely on the Ancestry early pension list for a name. If she died first, she was never listed and if there were minor children, the guardian was sometimes readable, but the child's name was never listed. 2. Many surnames were misspelled and/or I found a duplicate. So were some of the census. There are over 300 listings of John Brown in the Illinois listings. In the case of Morgan, Scott, Greene, and Macoupin, I had good cemetery information, although I was surprised how many did not have a military stone, therefore were unlikely to have military identification. If there was no unit, I still did not know if I had the right John Brown. However, I was able to locate well over half, and have some information on another 15 or 20 percent. I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide. I am especially interested in getting more cemetery info and obituaries. In addition, since there was such a large westward movement, any of that type of info you might have would be a big help. If you would like copies of any of the information, just download it. There is no charge, nor will there be one.. If you are part of a genealogy organization or library, feel free to copy the whole thing. If you would like to link to my web sit, please do.
