Solomon Davis migrated to Macoupin County from Scott County, KY, during the 1820s. He brought unmarried children with him and settled in North Palmyra Township, neighboring John Cummings, the first known settler of North Palmyra. Solomon had eleven children, four of whom stayed back in Kentucky. The other seven had Macoupin County connections, as follows: Maria (born abt 1795) married John Tavis. This family migrated to Illinois a few years after Solomon's migration. Elizabeth (born abt 1800) married Lewis Mcwain in 1833. She died in 1849. Julia (born abt 1808) married William Cummings (son of John Cummings and brother of Samuel Cummings) in 1829. She is my great, great, grandmother. I do not know when she died, or where. Polly (born abt 1811) married Jackson McCulley in 1834. John D. (born abt 1813) may be the one who married a Mary Walker in 1843. Garret (born abt 1815) married, first, Catharine Cawood in 1839, and, second, Mildred Blevins in 1860. Harriet (born abt 1817) married Francis Stone in 1836. These families show up in the Macoupin County census records from 1830 through 1860. Most of the names can be found in Solomon Davis's will of 1846, the same year of his death. Solomon Davis was buried in Pulliam Cemetery (just north of Modesto). His tombstone stands alone in the old section of the cemetery. The one member of the family who is a mystery is Solomon Davis's wife. She is not mentioned in the will, so she may have already died. Records of land transactions indicate that Solomon had a wife named Elizabeth. Whether this Elizabeth was the mother of all or some of the children is unknown. Also unknown is her maiden name. I would like to learn more about the Solomon Davis family, especially his wife and mother of his children. Dwayne Wrightsman <dw@nh.ultranet.com>
