    3. THE THE LIST: In addition to the CUMMINGS family migrating from Macoupin County to Taney Co., MO. The families of Braxton MABRY/MAYBERRY, Reuben CLEVENGER, brothers Peter LAIR & Charles LAIR Jr. went to Taney Co., MO where they were listed in 1840 census Swan twp. (Forsyth), Taney County. Another LAIR brother, William L. LAIR was in MO, prob. Taney Co. in 1841 when dau. Elizabeth was born. Charles & William L. LAIR returned to IL in time to be listed 1850 Census in Macoupin County. Reuben CLEVENGER's wife, Sarah (MAYBERRY) was a dau. of Braxton MABRY, who was early to Macoupin Co., by 1829. They may have gone to Taney Co. as early as 1836. Peter LAIR m. Elizabeth CLEVENGER & William L. LAIR m. Martha CLEVENGER, both daus. of Reuben CLEVENGER. During the Civil War (1863), Peter LAIR returned to Macoupin Co. for a short time, returning to MO in time to be listed 1870 Census in Howell Co., MO. According to an 1878 letter, "Peter and family are somewhere in South West Missouri." Have not located him in 1880 Census. The 1878 letter says Charles LAIR Jr. was living in Macoupin County, apparently dead by 1879 (History of Macoupin Co., Ills. by Brink, etc.) and not listed 1880 Census. (He's buried in Girard Cemetery...no dates (Black Hawk War) marker) (Charles' wife was Louisa MORRIS, prob. dau. Thomas...need dates of death.) William L. LAIR was named in the letter also; he is listed 1880 Census in South Otter twp. However, William's wife, Martha (CLEVENGER) was last listed 1850 Census in Macoupin County--can't find them, 1860 Census; but she was dead by 1870 Census when he was listed in South Otter. Need dates of death and place of burial for both. According to family members, Braxton MABRY d. Taney Co., MO sometime after 1840. Reuben CLEVENGER d. Taney Co., MO between 1860-70 census. Note: Two daughters have been found for Charles & Nancy LAIR: Jane m. William BRIDGES and Katherine m. Isaac PRITCHARD, both of whom were listed 1880 Census in Macoupin County--need dates of death for both. I have been working on a book of the "LAIR Family of Macoupin County" since late 1970's...striving to have it completed next year--2000. Would love to hear from other LAIR and allied family members.
