    3. No interstate exit at Waggoner. Take Farmersville Exit 72 off I55. West thru Farmersville. Take the county road just west of Farmersville going south to Waggoner. Down this road about 5 miles will take you right into Waggoner. Oops, if no sign at Farmersville for Waggoner turnoff, better go back into Farmersville and ask. (If the cousin who tried to find the cem and couldn't was a male, would explain why "he" couldn't find it. The "Oops" statement would be ignored by my husband. <g>) Go west thru Waggoner (don't blink or you will miss Waggoner) to the 90degree curve going north. About another mile to 90degree curve going west About another mile going west to the first county road going south. The cem is about one and three quarters mile down this road on the west side of the road. Quoted from the Macoupin County Historical Society Cem book Tombstone Revelations I (written in the early 1980's) Sulphur Springs Cem was laid out early in the 1830's. It derives its name from two springs which are on the south and east side of the cem. There is a small builing still standing known as the Sulphur Springs Union Church, which served the Christian, Baptist and Methodist denominations. It was used for a burial grounds for 50 years before it was deeded by William T Burford and Myra A T Burford, his wife, to Macoupin County for $55.00 for a Quit Claim Deed. The WPA fieldmen in 1936 measured and recorded the actual description of the cemetery. The church was also used as a school and the teacher was a Mr. Harris. There are many cholera victims buried here and many of the old graves are lying north and south which is very unusual. There are many beautiful monuments in this cemetery. Everett C. Burton who was killed in the battle at Argonne in France has life sized replica of himself standing at attention. It is complete with all his uniform, helmet, gun, trench knife, flask and bag. It is made of concrete and very, very lifelike. We have deed records and also a history of the church. Listed by Thelma Dean (Zelmer) Stewart. My note - my cousin and husband does cem stomping like a lot of us "nuts." They were walking thru this cem about dusk one eve and looked up and saw the soldier's stone and scared them to death. It is so lifelike. Gloria At 05:08 PM 2/15/99 -0800, you wrote: >I am a new subscriber, mostly I was wondering >if anyone could give me directions to the >Sulphur Springs Cemetery near Waggoner.
