Quoting below with permission: "At Epcot Center, my family was joined at our most excellently sheltered table at the Fountain Cafe during a thunderstorm by a delightful lady who appeared to be in her 80s and was partially blind, but traveling alone. In the course of our conversation, she mentioned that she is Scottish-Irish. Having endured many-a cyber argument on the correct manner of identification for a person with one Scottish and one Irish parent, and the designation of the heritage of their descendants, I jumped on this topic! I asked her to please explain to me the proper term to designate a person with one Scottish and one Irish parent. Her first reply startled me. "It depends on where you are born." Huh? She explained further, "If you have one Irish parent and one Scottish parent, whether you are an Irish-Scot or are Scottish-Irish depends upon where you are born. I have one Irish parent and one Scottish parent, and I was born in Scotland; therefore I am Scottish-Irish. Had I been born in Ireland, I would be an Irish-Scot." Further questioning elicited the fact that the terms Scot-Irish or Scots-Irish or Scotch-Irish are NOT USED. And just to be sure I understood correctly, I asked about descendants born in America. She said that they are considered to be Americans with either Scottish-Irish or Irish-Scot ancestors, but they CANNOT BE either of those things since they were not born in either Scotland or Ireland. So -- from the horse's mouth, so to speak -- If you have both Irish and Scottish ancestors who were MARRIED TO EACH OTHER and produced others of your direct ancestors, you can have Irish-Scot or Scottish-Irish HERITAGE, but you are not either of those things unless you yourself were born in either Scotland or Ireland to one Scottish parent and one Irish parent. And there is no such term as either Scot-Irish or Scots-Irish or Scotch-Irish so far as the natives of Scotland and Ireland are concerned. -- Loretta Iroquois County ILGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~iliroquo/ Ford County ILGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilford/ Iroquois County Genealogical Society http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilicgs/" ------------------ Gloria Frazier Macoupin County ILGenWeb County Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/macoupin.htm
