I've subscribed to the first two of these, Lithuania-L and LithuanianGenealogy, for some time. I'll investigate the third. I've also worked with a Lith-English electronic dictionary, the Lith white pages, and the Shtetl-Seeker village locator. All three are great Lith resources. > ------------- > Obits for Gusky deaths 19 Jul 1934 and 30 Dec 1956: > http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/m_paper.htm#oldest > Probably the Staunton Star Times and/or the Mt Olive Herald Thank you. I'd already downloaded that page, but there were so many newspapers listed, and I didn't know which would be likely to have published the obit in 1934. With your local knowledge, I now have two likely newspaper names. [snip] > No more in the Staunton Memorial Park Cemetery book than what you > have: Bummer. First, the clerk spelled the groom's name differently than the groom signed it: Clerk = Gayouske vs. Groom = Gayousky. Next, he got the groom's birthplace wrong: Clerk = Austria vs. Groom orally and on census = Lithuania. We think the conversation maybe went like this: "Place of birth?" "Vilna." [Clerk to self: "Vilna? Oh, Vienna... Austria"] My academic resource on the Lithuanian-L list thinks Austria is an error, and so do I. No church is named, but it's signed by "Rev. L P Hurthmans", "a Catholic Priest". The good news is that the groom's father is given as (difficult to read) SIMAY GAYOUSKE, and the mother as (difficult to read) "AGATHA MARTELAIT. Even if somewhat erroneous, these offer a lead. > -------------- > Naturalization - if naturalized before getting to Macoupin Co - he > would have had abt 10yrs from PA to IL, and could have been > naturalized in PA. His 1910 IL census lists him in column 16 as "Pa", or having taken out first papers. Quite possible that he naturalized between then and 1934 while in IL. I've downloaded the form G-639, and intend to send it off for naturalization papers within a day or so. > I chose Philadelphia. > http://www.nara.gov/regional/findaids/phiguide.html I've been to NARA SE in Atlanta twice, and will be going again in late November. From <http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/wwidraft.txt> I've learned that NARA SE hold the originals of the WW1 draft registration records, and will do a lookup for $10. I believe I'll ask them to do that. Thank you, Gloria, for your rapid response and your tips. I've saved your posting to my genealogy folder, and will work my way through it some more.
