Matt, and Mt. Olive Researchers, Matt, I am sending this reply to the list, because I think it is information to be shared. Some of the information I sent to Matt was taken from a book I picked up at the newspaper office in Mt. Olive one of the times we visited, titled, "Remembering Mt. Olive, a Picture Scrapbook"! By Carl L. Stanton, assisted by Linda Hasquin, both from the Mt. Olive Herald Newspaper, published in 1993! They have also published a book, titled, "Week By Week", without pictures. I thought I had that one, as well, but do not see it at the momment. The most frustrating is that the book has no index at all. Not complaining, at all, as the book itself is a wonderful photo history of Mt. Olive. I have on many an evening, sat and paged through it, getting a wonderful feel for the community my Grandmother was raised in. It would just be so much more useful as a tool, if it were indexed. Some photo's are from the late 1800's, many are later; some have the names of the subjects, many do not. Some say who provided the information, many do not. Many of the group Comunity High School Seniors photos are included (1935 - 1992). My husband and I visited Mt. Olive on two or three occassions. I am sure we caused a bit of conversation as we criss crossed the town, begged for information and help, walked the cemeteries, etc. for 3 - 4 days (with out of state plates on our car), and then disappeared, as quickly as we came (off to dig in Carlinville - Grin!). I have done enough research to feel that certain families I almost know well enough to be friends, inspite of the fact that I am sure those names were not the ones my family associated with (out of their league?). The WHITEHOUSE'S, NEIMANN'S, SCHELLER'S, DROSTE'S, KEISER'S, STIEL'S, PRANGE'S and others, are almost as well known to me as members of my own family. The photo's of German Day, Sept 4, 1911, are especially dear to me (my Gr. Grandma died on Aug. 6, 1911. Was my Grandma still there for the German Day Celebration (would she have stayed a month after coming so far for her mother's funeral? Or did she go back to North Dakota?). Did she even make it time for the funeral? My Grandmother, her mother and her step-father came to Mt. Olive in 1892. A year later, the step-father was dead (horrid mine accident), and in 1911 her mother was dead, and had left five "infants", as they were called in the court records. None stayed in the area. My grandmother, the oldest, was already living in North Dakota, William Schultz joined up during WWI, and never returned to the area, Meta Hillmann m. a Unknown Williams (from Macoupin Co?? I do not know), and she left as well. Theresa Hillmann ended up in Oregon, with maybe a stop in North Dakota. The two youngest boys, Walter and John Hillmann were put into guardianship of the Keisers. John went to MI, and Walter to the Chicago area, as adults. They were just 8 & 11 years old when their Mom died. The last documentation I have is the confirmation picture for Walter in 1913 of my family, in the area. I was lucky enough to have visited Mt. Olive BEFORE they tore down the Immanual Lutheran Church. Cold chills still run up and down my spine as I recall standing in the same place my Grandmother and her mother stood so many years ago. Maybe somebody knows if these books are still available. If you have Mt. Olive connections, I recommend getting a copy of the books. At least to me, genealogy is more than just names and dates. The history and feeling that these books have given me is just wonderful. And if you ever have a chance to visit the area your ancestors grew up, I can only say I do not think you will ever regret it. Sorry for the length of this.
