In 1904 he moved with his parents to Gillespie, Illinois ard later worked as a coal miner until an injury forced hjm to give up coal mining, born 1930 to 1934 lb. Fries served as sheriff of Macoupin County. He served in the Illinois General Assembly from 1935 to 1936 and represented the 38th Conpessional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1937 to 1941.
