    1. [ILMACOUP] Ostfriesen Schmidt Families by Gillespie
    2. Darren King
    3. Hi, Has anyone on the list researched (or is researching) the five children of Garrelt Monnen Schmidt that came to the Gillespie area from Poghausen, Ostfriesland in the 1850s? The children were: Jann Garrelts Monnen Schmidt born 22 Oct 1828, married Meta abt 1860, immigrated 1859 Weye Garrelts Monnen Schmidt born 7 Feb 1831, married Antje Börcherts Schoon 5 Mar 1855 in MacCo., immigrated early 1850s Weert Garrelts Monnen Schmidt born 10 Mar 1832, married Trientje Janssen Milfs 19 Nov 1858 in Ostfriesland, immigrated 1859 Alske Garrelts Monnen Schmidt born 8 Feb 1838, married Jordan Eilers 3 Nov 1860 in MacCo. Ude Focken Garrelts Schmidt born 23 Jun 1844, married Memke Ibelings Free in Ostfriesland, immigrated 1867 They appear as Smith in most of the 1860 thru 1880 census, but appear as Schmidt in the 1900 census and elsewhere. Many are buried at Gillespie Cemetery, Ude moved to Nebraska before 1900. There's some data for Weert and Ude posted on Rootsweb, but John, Weye and Weert all named their children very similarly and it doesn't help that the similarly-named children were born very close together! Trientje Janssen Milfs is related back in Ostfriesland to my Adden line, and a sister of Antje Schoon married an Adden in Madison County. Trientje's parents and siblings also came to Macoupin County (sisters married Jann Broers, Tamme Janssen, Menne Johnson & Thomas DeWerff). I'm trying to document the families after they arrived in America and can provide quite a bit of info on their lines back in Ostfriesland, so if anyone here has more on these folks I'd really like to hear from you. Thanks! Darren
