The score was Staunton 233; Gillespie 0. I didn't read the whole article. This information made the first edition of The Book of Lists. Honest, I'm looking for the article and will share it with everyone. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gary & Barbara Hoffstetter" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, December 27, 2006 9:24 AM Subject: Re: [ILMACOUP] Interesting Historical Fact for Gillespie andStaunton > I think the webpage is incorrect. I have always heard the score was Staunton 223, Gillespie 0. It was supposed to be a JV game and Gillespie showed up with their freshmen/sophmores and Staunton had their varsity team and refused to play the JV squad against Gillespie. In addition, Staunton had a very good team that year and the result was predictable. I don't know how true it was but I always heard that these coal miniing towns in Macoupin were a little loose with their eligibility for players in those days. Some of the players would work in the mines and then show up to play in the football game later. I'm not saying this was true, just what I used to hear when I lived in Gillespie. It would be interesting to find out if this was really the case. On 12/27/06, Chuck & Cindy Leonard <[email protected]> wrote: > > The score was Staunton 233; Gillespie 0. Two different teams but my father Al played halfback for Girard high back in the early 30's. He told me that against their arch rival Virden, Girard had driven down to the Virden goal line at the end of the game and the crowd (guess it was in Virden) charged the field, keeping them from running a play to score and win the game and the refs let the clock expire while the crowd was all over the field. Don't know if this is true or just sour grapes but it was either in the '31 or '32 football season.
