Thank you for making a contact about Macoupin on ancestry. Hope it does change soon. I have written numerous times for a correction to no avail. I had a cousin die in January of this year in Macoupin and her Social Security Death info has MacOupin, no response to that email either! Thank you Kathie for taking time to walk people through this Ancestry.com change. Also I do hope they will change the spelling of Macoupin! Wow, I have worked on this for years to no avail. When I copy things to add to my files I always have had to change the way it was spelled. Thanks so much! I ditto your comments! I just went to my Ancestry.com account and changed my preferences to allow my E-mail address. Ancestry.com must have recently automatically restricted E-mail addresses because I mine had always been available as far I knew until you called attention to it. Thanks for the heads up. Linda R.F. Arnold _LRFArnold@AOL.com_ (mailto:LRFArnold@AOL.com) Menifee, California Quoted from Cindy Birk Conley, cc White County ILGenWeb: "The Overstreet mailing list is having a fuss over a new feature ancestry has added to make it harder to email other folks, so I checked it out and sent the following members to my White County listmembers: Listmembers, Ancestry has recently added another restriction on their message boards. If you want to directly email someone who has posted to a message board you will likely get a message that the person has CHOSEN to only use ancestry's email system, which makes it hard for anyone who does not have an ancestry subscription. Ancestry seems to have made this choice for everyone. However, if you would like to be contacted directly or off the message board, you can edit your profile or change your preference to give people your email addy, although it is shown as a graphic to keep spam robots from grabbing it. I would suggest you make the change. I went ahead and added a public profile, since I am the board administrator. These public profiles seem to be an attempt to morph ancestry into a social networking website. My name is Edith Ann Anderson <edith.anderson42@yahoo.com> My father was John Harbird Anderson of University City, MO and Carlinville, IL (until he was 17). His sister is Helen Virginia ("Alice") Anderson Brock also of Carlinville. Their father was John K. Anderson b. 1877 to a Male Anderson and Virginia M. Ramey Anderson b. 1842 in Carlinville, IL. I have attached a census page from 1880 (I couldn't open the file.gf) that shows Mary Ramey Anderson as widowed head of household, along with her brother, Joseph and my 3 yo grandfather along with his 3 siblings. I have spent, and other relatives, too, several years trying to locate the husband of Virginia M. Ramey/father of my grandfather John K(imball) Anderson. Can you give me any help at all? Other relatives of mine in Carlinville on my father's (John Harbird Anderson) were Georgia and Betty Burroughs of 302 Minton, Charles Burroughs and other Burroughs, and many Cherrys. Reputedly our uncle George Cherry was a drummer for Gen Sherman in his march from Atlanta to the sea (who knows?). Maternal relatives are from Gillespie. My mother was Edith Margaret Hutton Anderson and her parents were Charles and Lula (Fitzpatrick) Hutton. I did find a James B. Anderson who mustered out of the army in 1877 and returned to Tennessee. Coincidentally, Tennessee is where Mary Ramey Anderson's husband was from. Thanks for considering this inquiry. Edith Anderson 1606 E. 50th Place, 2A Chicago, IL 60615
Debra, I have no idea what preceded the Brethren Church on its location at Dean St. and Finis St. in Virden. The legal description includes Lots 2, 3, & 6 in Block 29 in Hickox addition to the town, now city, of Virden. Three deeds recorded together on the 19th of October 1911 appear consecutively in Deed Book 251, pages 500-501. Oops. In my reply to Linda below I was off by a century, mentioning the 1740s and 1760s when I really meant the 1840s and 1860s. No excuse for these errors except getting old and used to doing really early family history. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. If the deed is not too long, could you prepare a summary of the essential facts in the deed. My maternal great-grandfather, John H. Brubaker, was the first elder in charge of the Virden church. His oldest son (my maternal grandfather), Irvin J. Brubaker, was one of the early deacons. So was my paternal grandfather, George W. Wrightsman. The Virden church was organized the same year (1912) that the West Otter Creek church closed. My paternal grandmother's father, Javan Gibson, was elder in charge at that time. The new Pleasant Hill book that your committee published a few years back has a 1912 photo (p. 352) of the West Otter Creek church with a number of Brethren in it, including my father, Okal Wrightsman, who was a tiny baby at the time. He was held by his mother, Melva Wrightsman Gibson (daughter of Javan Gibson). Last year I wrote a book entitled SUGAR CREEK BRETHREN which follows the Brethren who settled on the Banks of Sugar Creek in Auburn Township in 1830 when Isham Gibson (father of Javan) founded the congregation. It then moves on to the Otter Creek congregation in Macoupin County, also established by Isham Gibson in the 1740s and even into the 1760s when the Pleasant Hill group formed. Isham Gibson was kicked out of the Brethren in the late 1760s just as Pleasant Hill was taking off. He moved to Missouri shortly thereafter and died. At one time the Otter Creek congregation included the satellite Brethren groups at Pleasant Hill in Virden-Girard, the "new" Sugar Creek in Auburn, Macoupin Creek over near Farmersville, and the Bear Creek group over in Christian County. Probably the most interesting chapter in the book is the naming of all the early Brethren buried in the Thayer Cemetery behind Maggie's Tavern. Most people do not know that this cemetery started out as a Brethren burial ground in 1833 on the farm of Elder John Dick. Yes, this is the same Dick family that the library in Carlinville is named after. If anyone wants to take a peek at my book, copies are at the Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield and in the local libraries in Virden and in Auburn. Ruthann, Five years ago (2004) the board of Asbury Cemetery had the following names listed: Harold Rich, Marcella Huson, Florence Gross, Eugene Ferguson and C. Thomas Sonneborn as well as myself. There were 2 more listed but they are now deceased, as some of the others listed could be also. We met once and I compiled a letter asking for donations for the upkeep of the cemetery. As I live too far away from Asbury Cemetery it is difficult for me to know what is going on. I corresponded with Florence Gross and sent a donation a few years in a row for the mowing. I was not aware that anyone was mowing for free as at one time there was monies in the bank to cover the "once a year" mowing, before Memorial Day, the last I knew. I need to look into the matter as I have been negligent in that respect. As you might know, I have ancestors buried there, several in fact, and am concerned about the upkeep. In fact one of mine married a Rives (Converse). Have we corresponded in the past? Hi, I wasn't taking notes on anything but the Brethren Church deeds, but I sure did notice all the other trustee items. I looked at Grantee Books 20 and 21 only today, so if someone wants to pursue that, they should keep the book numbers in mind. Sorry. I also noticed a half page or so, located after some other initial letter (like "C", maybe") that was nothing but affidavits! Hi List and Dwayne I believe that Jesse Caudle built a Church in Macoupin Co. Ill 1830-1880. Jesse, Joshua, Isham, and Thomas Parish Caudle were very active in Churches in Wayne, Macoupin, and Greene Co Ill. Do you have any information about Jesse Church? Courthouse I looked for any deed to the Virden Church of the Brethren, incorporated in 1912, which apparently no one has ever had. I looked under "B" for Brethren and Baptist, "C" for Church, "V" for Virden, and thought about "G" for German Baptist Church. I noted several deeds between David C. Vaniman and Trustees of the Church of the Brethren and Trustees of the German Baptist Church for other lands. Surely, I thought, such deeds would not be listed under "T" for Trustees! Wrong!!! I found not only the deeds for the Virden Brethren church property in Grantee Book 21, but noted many others for Trustees of Hettick Church, I.O.O.F., Stults Burying Ground (Palmyra), churches in Carlinville, Modesto, and elsewhere, school districts, banks, companies, and many other entities. Thus, at least in this 1900-1920 period, it might be wise to look under "T" for trustees of those groups. Linda Did you find anything about Asbury Chuch or it's cemetery in rural Hettick? I haven't been able to find out who is really responsible for the cemetery other than the family that mows it for free.
