Here is some information on Illinois Pioneer. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ilsgs/projects/prairie-pioneer.html Here is an index of names. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ilsgs/PPsrtd111407.htm "This project was organized for the Bicentennial, and is now a very popular project with over 3,000 certificates being issued to descendants of Illinois pioneers. Three catagories of certificates are issued to descendants of pioneers who resided in Illinois (1) prior to statehood, (2) 1819-1850, and (3) 1851-1880." I received an Illinois Prairie Pioneer Certificate from the Illinois State Genealogical Society for Seth T. Hodges who was in the Macoupin County in prior to Statehood.

I am guessing, too. I would consider the Public Domain Land sales timeframe since no one owned the land until they were on the PD land and paid for it. I didn't go thru all of the sales but I did see an 1857 public domain land sale for Macoupin County. The Public Domain Land sales are at the IL Archives site and I have intended for a "few" years to get the Macoupin sales on the Macoupin County ILGenWeb site...... When searching for my Scottish 2gr grandmother, I noted an influx of "foreigners" between the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Perhaps with the need of the "new courthouse" by 1867 would indicate a population growth requiring it. Having just ran the numbers via the census index at Ancestry.com, I found: 1850 census had 25 b. Scotland, 396 b. England, 126 b. Germany, 7 b. France, 3 b. Wales and 180 b. Ireland. 1860 census shows 98 b. Scotland, 962 England, 972 b. Germany, 31 b. France, 30 b. Wales and 837 b. Ireland I would like to believe the pioneers of Macoupin County arrived prior to 1850 ... but, I suppose that is because my Macoupin County families were all here/there before 1850. Being a California born & raised, anyone born in California prior to 1950 could be considered a "pioneer". I remember well when one of my teachers asked where each of us was born--I was one of only two born in California and the only one born in Southern California. Without dating myself that was in the mid 1950s. Linda R.F. Arnold Menifee, California In a message dated 6/10/2009 8:17:00 P.M. However, not all of those covered in this book were "Pioneers" as some were merely labeled "Prominent Men." Alternatively, perhaps the end of the "Pioneer Period" for Macoupin County was 1829, when Macoupin County was organized into a county. My ancestors John Cummings, his son William Cummings, Solomon Davis, his daughter Julia Davis, were farming in what is now North Palmyra several years before there was a Macoupin County, so I suppose they were kind of like pioneers although I doubt very much that they ever thought of themselves that way. Interesting question, but why ask it? A pioneer is in the eye of the beholder. If we are lucky, the "Pioneer Period" will never end. Samuel E. Enos and wife Laura W. appear in the 1900 census of Zanesville, Montgomery county, Illinois. He was born in Oct 1867, her date appears to be May 1868. Married less than a year; occupation farmer. Both born Illinois, parents of both born in Tennessee. Copy is a little faint. They are in the 1910 census of District 62 North Palmyra Township, Macoupin, Illinois listed as Sam E. Enos 44 married once for 11 years. Under occupation is farm laborer- working out. He is born Illinois as are his parents. Laura A. 44 married once, 11 years, one child/one child living. She is born Illinois, father born Tennessee, mother born Illinois. Ray, son, age 4. They appear again in the 1920 census of Oskalousa, Clay county, Illinois, along with one son Ray or Roy S. Enos, age 14?. Samuel is 55, Laura is 54. Samuel's occupation is truck farmer. Sorry but I don't have time to search for 1930 right now, but will get this much off. Hope this helps.
