You may want to check the history books written about Macoupin Co. Somewhere I have seen one which listed all the schools at that time or during the county's history with the number given to each. The listed included the country one-room schools as well as those in the communities which are recognized today. I couldn't believe the list as there was close to 200 listed and am sure that some may not have been on it. Kendall supplied me with lots of information for his Walden section of the Drury book. Another Walden who supplied material was the late Merle Walden who died in 2004. I was formerly (in 2000) in touch with a Don Nevins of Edwardsville, who is a direct descendant of Austin Sims Nevins. I sent him a copy of the posting about Austin & Martha, but it bounced. I am hoping he is subscribed to the mail list. Heard from Beverly Holloway that you went to Doc's with petitions on Friday. I sure hope this whole endeavor is successful! Have you tried talking to a Kendall & Marie Walden who live on the County Cutoff Road, south of Dixie Stewart Gage, and being the third house on the East side of the Road from Dixie going south. I would like to congratulate Jim and Lloyd for all the info about the Rafferty/Raffurty School, I really find all the material interesting. May I suggest a complete article to be added along with the Lloyd's picture. I am sure Gloria would appreciate adding the total history for this school. I think Jim has done a excellant job in presenting the story so far. Thanks guys, Wayne
I have wondered if Bertie could be a granddaughter instead of a daughter. And I've also wondered if her name may be Roberta, or Bertha. I've not found obituaries for either Catherine (d. 1884) or Henry (d. 1887). I do have death index copies. I also have a transcription pages of the Brighton cemetery where they are buried, but Bertie does not appear with them. She would have been 12 and 15 when they died, so perhaps she went to live with an older sibling. Unfortunately, without the 1890 census, I'm afraid she will be difficult to find. Have you got or considered getting copies of the obits for the other children of Henry and Catherine? Perhaps one of them will mention her either as a survivor or having predeceased them with the possibility of a married name included. She could even be included if a number of siblings is given as preceding in death. Sometimes this is the only way you know that there was another sibling even if they died between census as an infant or young child. More information on the Raffurty school house at Rinaker road and Finch road. The old school house building standing there now is the newer Raffurty school house built to replace the old school house. When the new building was erected, the old school building was moved to the Charles Barnstable farm and used as a chicken house. It is this building that was donated by Mrs. Charles Barnstable and moved into the Historical Society grounds in Carlinville and restored. Raffurty School District was known as the Union School District until 1913 when the named was changed to Raffurty, named after the owner of the farm where the school was located. At that time there were four other schools in Macoupin county by the name of Union, thus the reason these school named Union were changed. The yearly school reports turned in to the County Superintendent of Schools by the teacher teaching at the school each particular year spell Raffurty with the ur instead of er. Interesting! An answer to Lloyd Konneker who inquired if there were bears at one time in Macoupin county? Particularly Western Mound township! An article in the Macoupin County Enquirer, issue dated March 22, 1893 titled Macoupin's Early Days tell: This writer remembers distinctly hearing the old pioneers relate their dangerous encounters with the bear. Some three miles north-east of Chesterfield there is a point of timber running out south of Bear creek, some three miles into the prairie. In the early days this was named "Bear-Rough Point which name it retains to this day. It was so named on account of the great number of bears which inhabited the area. We remember having heard Joseph Hodges (who was a son of Seth Hodges) relate the facts and circumstances attending the slaughter of many of these animals by his father and others in "Bear Rough Point", and it is absolutely certain that this point as well as Bear creek took their names from the fact of there being found in their precincts such vast numbers of this animal. ----- Original Message ----- From: "lloyd konneker" <bootch@nc.rr.com> To: <ILMACOUP@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 02, 2009 6:49 AM Subject: [ILMACOUP] more history and geography: Lindbergh, and Western Mound > More gleanings from a geography trip to western Macoupin county. > > The 1932 USGS map shows a landing field in the SW corner of Bird > township. Ask at your local library if any of the materials are available through inter-library loan. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Hartsock" <judyann1943@yahoo.com> To: <ilmacoup@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 17, 2009 9:07 AM Subject: Re: [ILMACOUP] Deaths in mines Thanks for this information. It includes injuries and deaths in mines in Illinois for the some time in the 1800s into the 1900s. I found a missing family member in the 1898 report. These books were at one time in Lovejoy Library, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. They also were on microfiche. I know this because I cataloged the collection and was so glad to know of its existence. I would think that the Illinois State Library would have copies or the archives. The information in them includes a bit of family history - spouse, children, details of the accident. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rick" <hmdoty@madisontelco.com> To: <ilmacoup@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 16, 2009 12:23 PM Subject: Re: [ILMACOUP] Deaths in mines > Search the name in google books > http://books.google.com/bkshp?hl=en&tab=wp you might get a "hit" from > the "Annual Coal Report" > Rick > > > At 09:21 AM 10/16/2009, you wrote: > >This is wonderful!
