My veterans go back a ways------- I'd like to honor my father J. Elmo Clark, who was in the US Navy in World War 1----yes WW1. He was only 16 and lied about his age to join. He looks great in his Navy photograph. And my great-grandfather John M. Clark, who at age 19 was in the 60th Ohio in the Civil War and spent 9 months as a prisoner in Andersonville, and survived. I'm quite proud of him. Judy Clark-Wick

Not in my direct line, but... John Knibb (1845 - 1911) immigrated from England in 1855 with his mother and siblings. In 1863, while living in St. Louis, he enlisted in Company "B" of the 7th Minnesota Infantry. By 1870 he was living in Bunker Hill, Macoupin County, where he eventually married, and raised six of eight children to adulthood. Sons and nephews served in the Great War, and later generations have continued to serve in the US forces. Marsha L. Ensminger

Hi, My Great Uncle, Walter F. Hillman was born in Mt Olive, Macoupin Co, IL in 1900. He moved over to Montgomery Co. some time after the death of his mother, Augusta, in 1911, to work in a mine in Nokomis. There he met and married Hazel M. Lockard. Together they had one child, a son, Robert K. Hillman, b. 1924. Robert joined the Army from Christian County, IL. Pfc Robert K. Hillman was shot down on March 5, 1945 in action over Luzon, Philippines. It was 3 1/2 years later, August 18, 1948 when his body was recovered and returned to his parents for burial. He is buried in Irving Park Cemetery, Chicago, between his parents. Being an only child, there is nobody else left to remember Robert [my Mother's cousin], so I ask you all to remember him, today. And my Great Uncle and Aunt, who gave their only child to defend this great country of ours. God Bless Robert K. Hillman and the Unites States of America. Sharon Buethner

I hope I can 'butt in' as this is the first time I have heard of a DDD schedule as described below. This is about my unfound ancestor--since forever, it seems....surname CHIPMAN, David; the only male born [1838] to Seth and Sarah Lorton Chipman, Greene Co. His parents went with entire family except him and their eldest [married] daughter, to Fannin County TX in 1848-49. He was living with aunt and uncle William and Elizabeth (Chipman) Bradshaw in 1850 Census. Elizabeth C. Bradshaw died in 1855. CENSUS IL 1860, WhiteHall, Greene, IL: David Chipman, now 22, appears with family #176--Samuel Beard [25], wife Sarah [22], daughter Martha [3] all born TN and Mary Turner [10]. This family is next door to family #175--widower and Uncle, William Bradshaw [34], also born TN and his two daughters, Mary [7] and Leonora [5]. They appear on the last lines of that census page. The Chipmans were in Texas in 1852, when Seth was sworn in as JP in Bonham, Fannin, TX. In that 1860 census, the first entry on next page is family #177, and lists a JOSEPHINE McGLOTHIN, 'Hotel Keeper'. What 'sort' of hotel? Could this connect to his orphaned cousin, Josephine ['Fena'] HICKS? There is no mention of David Chipman in subsequent IL censuses and no apparent record of marriage, military service or where and when he died. Why would David, at age 12 in 1850 and 22 in 1860, remain in Illinois when his family moved to Texas in 1848? Though not completely implausible, he was young to be a 'farmhand'. Was he handicapped--sheltered by the family or community? Is 'Hotel Keeper" a 'nice' name for "home for the handicapped"? My questions: Is this DDD schedule only seen for 1880? Is there another place where this information may be listed? A handicapped child seems to be my only alternative at this point. Maybe that's why Jacob and Nancy Bacon did NOT go to Texas when the rest of the family did. In 1852 and 1855 two more children were born to them, but in TX, SO maybe David died about this time, freeing the Bacons to join the rest of the family. I just can't figure what happened to David Chipman as a young adult....At any rate, Nancy returned to IL , a widow, by 1865 State Census. David was her only brother--this line daughtered out--in Texas. Hi Debbie I believe Samuel and other Caudles built Churches 1830 - 1890 and I believe the Churches had Schools. Is there any records of these Schools Cowboy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debbi Geer" <dgirth@yahoo.com> To: <ilmacoup@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 28, 2009 6:55 PM Subject: Re: [ILMACOUP] Schools - when were they started? You may want to check the history books written about Macoupin Co. Somewhere I have seen one which listed all the schools at that time or during the county's history with the number given to each. The listed included the country one-room schools as well as those in the communities which are recognized today. I couldn't believe the list as there was close to 200 listed and am sure that some may not have been on it. When was it started? History? I have lead her to the Historical Society Library, the regional superintendent's office in Carlinville, the school office in Girard. I don't think that is the answer she may really need. Anyone have another idea, such as a state office, a tax exempt record, some deed exemption/exception record at the county level? Thanks.
