    3. Jim, I haven't yet been able to find a copy of the deed for Hopewell church, but I have it on a list to work on, in a file, along with about 200 or so other churches in Illinois. The post which I noticed says it was in Sec 5, so perhaps the church in that section on the map which was just posted, could be it. I am not really sure whether it was at the site of the Wheeler cemetery. When I asked IRAD they couldn't find it, but without a book and page in a deed book, they often cannot. I don't know how many church deeds I've found, but they fill three large three-ring notebooks. This summer I did work for several days organizing all our church records, in our library, putting them in alphabetical order, and making a finding list so that I could find them easily when needed. I've also been digitizing some of them, and still searching and copying more records from all over the state. It could be a full time job, and I'm still working to make a living. Yesterday I helped with a burial at the cemetery I've restored here in Hancock county, where there had not been a burial since 1938. Goshen School 1932 geological survey map shows in sec 12 of Barr twp. http://macoupinctygenealogy.org/images/mpbarr.jpg These specific geological survey maps were mainly for schools altho they do show some churches. Goshen Church may be there......don't know. It does sound like in the obit that the schoolhouse did serve as the church. Just my guessing. 3. In the History of Macoupin County 1911 For Hilyard township (only one l, not two) It lists Pleasant LAURAY, entered eighty acres on section 12, December 15, 1830 under first settlers is spelled as LEMEY, The plat map of 1875 shows section 12, of Hillyard township on page 25 of the first part with properties : J. LEMAY, 120; Annie AMBROSE, 108; W. BOYLE, 160; S. LEMAY, Est., 40; H & J. MORRISON, 40; C. RECKHARD, 132; School No. 1, 40 on page 37 of the second part with properties : Arthur BOYLE, 320; J. AMBROSE, 148 H & J. MORRISON, 172; The above plat maps are not dated, and I can't find a reason for the differences, and both total 640 acres The variance in the way names are spelled in different places may indicate that the deeds also add a spelling different than what would be expected. Both pieces of ground about a mile apart. I assume the Hopewell church was a Baptist church. Was this church located somewhere near Old Plainview, the stagecoach change station in section 1, Hilyard township, on the Springfield Trace, now Stagecoach Road? The only thing I have been able to find in searching is this: "The United Baptist erected the first church in Polk township called the Liberty Baptist Church in section 35, Polk township in 1869 or 70. The membership had organized around 1830 and met in individual homes until they erected a church across the township line in (probably section 1) Hilyard township. Then in 1869 or 1870, they erected a new church in section 35, Polk township at a cost of $2,000. During the year 1870, the church listed a membership of 75 members. An addition was added to this church in 1892.This church burned in 1915. (It was located across the road from the Liberty school house, later known as the Dorman school house). Ministers of this church had been: Rev. Levi Mitchell, William Dorman, John R. Jones, David Elliet, Dorman Rhoads, Talmage Smith, J. J. Haycraft, Wesley Dorman, Grant Smirl,E.Perkins and George Hart. After the church burned, a new church, called the East Liberty Union Baptist church was built in section 25, Polk township.(near Lake Catatoga). A part of the membership in dispute, then transferred to the Plainview Baptist Church in Plainview. The East Liberty Union Baptist church was demolished by a tornado about 1926 and was not rebuilt. The membership at East Liberty disbanded and attended other churches. I would most like to know who the members were of the Hopewell Church. Another interesting note: In years past I noticed the old timers here all called the Mays Branch (creek), the Lemay's Branch. I always assumed it was named after Pleasant Lemay, a very early settler that settled in the area. Now I notice the maps call the creek Mays Branch. Could this have been a printing mistake in years past that has been carried on? Just wondering! Jim Frank ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert L. 3. Seems to be a reocurring (sp) problem of hacking on the IX server which USGenWeb and most of ILGenWeb is using. Hacking comes with a virus. Eastern countries are involved with IX. When you are warned not to go there, TAKE HEED, do not go there. IX has been going thru thousands of files cleaning the mess out. It is working but slow since the counties have so many files online. Keeping my fingers crossed that my server isn't hacked but if it is a warning will appear not to go there and maybe before I know and before I can warn you. Some people are just plain stupid and think they are having fun with hacking. Keep your virus checker up to date! Do not let it lapse. gloria At 09:08 AM 12/17/2009, you wrote: >All of the ILGenWeb sites got hacked, and it is being worked on and is >almost resovled. >The host server company and the ILGenWeb people have been working to prevent >this >from happening again. They locked down the sites to protect YOU, the researcher. It should be taken care of soon. Gloria has the Macoupin County site on a different host server, so it probably is OK. I just tried to enter one of the county websites by using the IL map at the IL Gen Web site.  However, I was prevented from using the map page which I have bookmarked and the IL Gen Web home page via US Gen Web  home page.  Seems that Google is saying that there is malicious ware on the IL site and it seems that the Bond Co site is the one which is causing the problem. If others would take time to see if they are getting the same information, I would like to know so that I can figure out if I need to reset my security settings.  I will note that I can access the Macoupin Co site via my bookmark. 3. Tried a search for "Westerhold" died in 2009 at ancestry, rootsweb and footnote. Five results at ancestry, one of which is only the surname. Four results at rootsweb, all with first and last names. Six results at footnote, all with first and last names. Marsha L.
