    1. Re: [ILMACOUP] Using Goats to Clear a Cemetery
    2. Thanks Debbi -- what a great idea! They use sheep around here to clean off the fields after the crops have been harvested. Maybe some goats or a few sheep could be sent to Killam Cemetery in South Palmyra so "tall boots, lots of bug spray and a weapon" aren't required equipment to visit that cemetery. Pacific Standard Time, dgirth@yahoo.com writes: Below my sign-off is a posting from the Boone surname mail list and thought I would share with some other mail lists I belong in case someone is trying to figure out a way to clean up an unmaintained cemetery and don't want to damage any unseen gravestones. It may sound stupid but consider the gravestones won't be damaged as machines or implements might do when you have no idea what's under the brush or tall grasses. A suggestion by the original submitter was to put the goats on a chain when there is no fence around the cemetery. Debbi Geer Using Goats to Clear a Cemetery Four sturdy goats are doing their part to uncover up to 30 grave sites at the Ballard Family Cemetery in Henderson County, North Carolina. The brambles and underbrush were so thick it was hard to see anything, much less walk around. The free labor is supplied by goats on loan from Henderson County Magistrate Sandra Laughter. 2. Hi Gloria, I have been meaning to write you about my Gr.Grandmother's listing not shown in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Mt Olive, Macoupin, IL. The information was included in the Cemetery Book [I believe I submitted it] but it is not included in the on-line Cemetery listing. I had submitted the info for the book as there are no stones on the plot, and I have a photo copy of the Immanuel Lutheran Church burial page, showing the three people who are buried on that plot. The first burial was within days of them arriving in Mt Olive [the ship docked in Baltimore July 21, 1892 and on August 2, 1892, they buried their young son, Friedrich Wilhelm Bernard Schultze, age 5 months, 22 days of age in Immanuel Lutheran Church cemetery (First Division, Block Two, Lot Two), Mt. Olive, IL. Not quite a year later, on July 25, 1893, Gr Grandfather, Henry Schultz [Wilhelm Heinrich Schultze], b. abt 13 July 1859 Germany, d. 2 July 1893 in a tragic mine accident: MASHED TO A PULP HENRY SCHULTZE , A LOADER AT NO. 8 SHAFT, KILLED TUESDAY AFTERNOON BY FALLING ROCK. The full text of the front page newspaper article I submitted and is up on the Macoupin County GenWeb pages. I am not sure is Wayne wants this info for his pages on miners that lost their lives in the mines or not ?? He is welcome to include it. The third burial on the plot is that of my Gr Grandmother, Juliana Augusta [Barkowsky] Schultze, Hillmann. Augusta Hillmann, as she was known by, was b. 14 Dec 1868 Germany and d. 6 August 1911 Litchfield, Montgomery, IL [in the hospital, there]. She was buried next to her first husband and her young son on the 8 August 1911. I am not sure where her 2nd husband, John Hillmann / Hillman is buried, and I would NOT list him on the cemetery listing. I need to see if I can find a record of his burial [he d. 17 Mar 1917 at the state hospital in Jackson], and his obit does not give a clue to where he was buried. He is not listed on this plot in the Church Burial Book. I suspect that he is buried there or at a cemetery in Montgomery County were his parents lived, but he is not shown with them, either [Asbury Cemetery]. I hope to someday put up a marker on the plot for my GrGrandparents, and I sure would be open for any ideas of what type to put up. 2. Thank you so very much! My grandfather and his siblings grew up in the Palmyra area but I grew up 1500 miles away from my parents families. I have names and dates but I was wanting to see where everything too place. I just wish I had a few stories telling me who they all were as individuals. Thanks again for all who responded. 3. At the request of a researcher, We went out to Wheeler Cemetery last summer. I did get a couple of photos before this dog that appeared to resemble a pit bull showed up. Yes, they scare me. I had my 3 month old terrier pup with me, on a leash, and I sure wasn't going to stay. I did put what I had on-line at : http://gillespieil.com/gillespie/wheeler/cemetery.html If anyone would care to furnish any additional information or photos, it would be much appreciated. 3. Jim, Elder Pleasant Lemay and his wife were charter members of Hopewell church in 1831, and I think he served as pastor until his death. We do have the records, complete, for the old Hopewell church. If not mistaken, I think I've also seen his name in minutes in Ohio and/or Indiana. Although I know nothing about the Union church which you said was near his home in Hilyard township, I do not think Elder Lemay would have attended that Union church, nor would he have joined there, if it was a missionary Baptist church. The records of HOpewell church would show that he attended there, whether or not it was not near his home. I certainly do appreciate the information, and help, in regard to trying to find a deed, and the exact location, of the Hopewell church. I appreciate your mention of abstracts, as that is something I had not thought about in my deed searches. In some rare cases, at least, that might be an option if it was really important, and the deed records did not give the answer. 3. To my knowledge the Huddleston-Wheeler Cemetery is in the NW1/4 of SW1/4 , Section 3, Gillespie Township. Cemetery is off north side of Quarry Road. In the booklet of Small Southern Macoupin County, Illinois Cemeteries, Vol. II. published by the Macoupin County Genealogical Society is an edited letter written by Edith Pearson Loakyer in 1967 to Ora Hoehn Lewis that states: "I do not know how long ago Mt. Pleasant church was built. The old Hopewell Hard-shell Baptist was built first." Turn back two pages and the written description of Huddleston-Wheeler Cemetery states that the original Wheeler cemetery was on the original Wheeler land. The original James Wheeler land patented from the government in 1835 is listed as 44.86 acres - SENW section 3 -08-07 (Gillespie township) and 44.90 acres, SWNE, section 3-08-07, (Gillespie township). It states that an earlier owner had let his hogs run in the area and they had rooted all the tombstones down. The present land owner , Mr. Spencer, took what stones he could find and stacked them along a fence. Then in 1970 the township cleared the fence line and bulldozed all but three of the stones which were stacked in the way. Mr. Spencer gave the stones to a Mr. Wheeler from Gillespie who was to reset the stones in the Huddleston-Wheeler Cemetery. The last paragraph tells that one lonely headstone base can be seen in the pasture where the original cemetery was. The base is to the south of the metal bridge on the road leading to the Huddleston-Wheeler Cemetery. If the deed you are seeking for the old Hopewell Church, if there was ever a deed, it should be mentioned on the abstract of the Ralph Spenser farm or else on the abstract of the Robert and Margaret Lytle etal. farm. Perhaps some one with a better knowledge of that area in Gillespie township could take part in answering where the location of the Hopewell church was. To others reading this e-mail: Pleasant Lemay was mentioned as a member of the Hopewell Church. Yet where he lived in Hilyard township, the Union Baptist church was close by somewhere quite near by his homestead. I would suppose that he and his family would attend church at that Church since the Hopewell church was several miles away by muddy roads and impassible hills between the two neighborhoods. Pleasant Lemay as well as his son, Pleasant and their families are buried in the Morrison cemetery very near to where the Pleasant Lemay homestead and the Union Baptist church was. I have another question: Does anybody reading this know how the Hopewell school located across the line with Polk township in section 5, Hilyard township was given this name. I went to this school all eight years of grade school and nobody around here knows how it ever got its name. The Harmony Baptist Church was first organized at a meeting at this school house and met there for services until a church was built in section 6 of Hilyard and later moved to where the Harmony Baptist church is now on the Shipman-Chesterfield road. 3. Jim, I haven't yet been able to find a copy of the deed for Hopewell church, but I have it on a list to work on, in a file, along with about 200 or so other churches in Illinois. The post which I noticed says it was in Sec 5, so perhaps the church in that section on the map which was just posted, could be it. I am not really sure whether it was at the site of the Wheeler cemetery. When I asked IRAD they couldn't find it, but without a book and page in a deed book, they often cannot. I don't know how many church deeds I've found, but they fill three large three-ring notebooks. This summer I did work for several days organizing all our church records, in our library, putting them in alphabetical order, and making a finding list so that I could find them easily when needed. I've also been digitizing some of them, and still searching and copying more records from all over the state. It could be a full time job, and I'm still working to make a living. Yesterday I helped with a burial at the cemetery I've restored here in Hancock county, where there had not been a burial since 1938.
