(her parents were: James and Catherine (VINEYARD) PIPER. They were married in 1818 in Madison Co., IL. Nancy remarried in 1866 to a R. W. WILLIAMS in 1866 in Macoupin Co., IL. Is there anyone researching a R.W. WILLIAMS?? Debi, Don't know if this will help, but thought I'd try. I have a PIPER in my database that married Emma Sexton. I don't have a first name, but they would have been in the Staunton area. A lot of SEXTONs and JARMANs are buried in the Tine-Sawyer Cem. This family lived in "West Prairie"??? which would have been east of Bunker Hill, IL. Has anyone heard of West Prairie?? There is a "story" that William came home to find his wife and children gone. He tracked them down with his gun - and then something about loosing all his land instead of going to jail. As of yet I haven't been able to find anything about this "story". Also I have heard of "West Prairie", I can't find my reference to it right now, but will continue to look. Hope this is some help. Kris Adcock

    3. Its been a while since I've posted my family - maybe someone can help. 1 - James Farris arrived in the Staunton, IL around 1817. He arrived with 5 children: Smith, George W. b 1796, Larkin (poss. James), Margaret (married John RIGGIN/RAGAN) & Lucinda (married William DAVIS). There is no mention of a wife for James. I believe all the children were married by the 1820 census. In 1838 Thomas S. WEST bought out the Farris heirs. So I presume that James & his spouse had both died by 1838. Is anyone researching Thomas S. West that might have a deed? The name is spelled Faris, Farriss & Pharis in different IL records for several generations. Does anyone have any information on a James Farris/Farriss/Pharis that may have been born possibly between 1760 - 1770. Then he was in NC or SC in 1796. 2 - George W. Farris (Farriss in the IL land records also) b. 1796 SC d. 1865 in Macoupin Co., IL. He is buried in the Tine Sawyer Cemetery. His spouse: Nancy PIPER b. 1700 GA d. ? (her parents were: James and Catherine (VINEYARD) PIPER. They were married in 1818 in Madison Co., IL. Nancy remarried in 1866 to a R. W. WILLIAMS in 1866 in Macoupin Co., IL. Is there anyone researching a R.W. WILLIAMS?? According to George's will they had 4 children: Sarah Jane (married Robert SAWYER 1849 Macoupin Co., IL), Lucinda (married ? HANDLEY), William Vinyeard (married Permelia HARRINGTON) & James S. (he was married 3 times). George built a band mill between Hamel & Alhambra township - one of the first there. According to his tombstone, George was a veteran, but I can't find him in anywhere in the military. He is listed as an Honor Roll Veteran in Macoupin Co., but when I contacted the state they found no information on him. 3 - William Vinyeard b. 1823 d. 1879 Macoupin Co., IL. He married Permelia HARRINGTON in 1879. Permelia was b. 1822 Staunton, IL. (I believe her father was John HARRINGTON and his father Whitmil HARRINGTON) William and Permelia had 7 Children: Sarah Jane b. 1845, Emma C. b. 1947, Margaret Isabell b. 1849, George W. b. 1853, Permelia Ann b. 1858, Charles b. 1863 and William Henry b. 1861. Other surnames associated with these Faris' in IL are: Crites/Cretuz, Funderburk/Funderburg, Piper, Sawyer & Vineyard. Sorry this is so long but maybe another name will help someone else to connect. Thank you for taking the time to read this. -- Debi Fort Myers, FL df620@gate.net - - - - - - - - - Did Washington just flash a quarter for his ID?

    2. Hi, A friend at work scanned a few pictures for me. One picture is 4 1/2 by 3 1/3 inches and contains 23 people - some being children. When you turn it over it is a post card. There is no address and does not appear to have been mailed. I found this among my grandmothers, Rita Emma Wheeler McDermott (born 25 May 1902) pictures. Her parents were William Collie Wheeler and Lora Stokes (born 9 Nov 1875). They lived in Gillespie, Macoupin County, IL. This picture must be from Macoupin County, IL. Does anyone recognize the names? I do not recognize these names. If this is your family - I will e- mail you the picture. The scanned picture is in JPG format that I can use at work - but - not at home. Happy Hunting, Kathie Mirabella *************************************************************************** On the back of the picture, in pencil, is the following: Family Group John Hays by me. I know John William Crump married Amanda Jane Gibson in North otter Macoupin Co. Il. in 1879. They were both living there at the time of their marriage. I have quite a bit of info on the Gibson Family, but none on the Crump Family any further back than John William Crump. Happy Holidays Pauline Crump-Stewart Livermore, Alameda Co., Calif.

Without looking into my immigration law books and notes, I doubt VERY much that your ggrandfather was "sponsored" by a family or organization. As I recall, sponsering was a legal novelty introduced after the turn of the century. On the other hand, he may have heard about the project (no telling how he heard) and showed up in C'ville to offer his services. Since the project was so large and the community mostly farmers and related merchants I believe that "technical" skills, such as millwright would have been welcome. > I know they stayed until after 1881 when their > youngest child was born. 3. Dear ILMacoup Rooters, I just want to thank each of you so much for the great instructions you gave me prior to our trip to Carlinville. Mary...thank you for directing me to Marilyn! She was a great help and a very delightful lady. Everyone was so wonderful and so helpful. We had a terrific visit. I have another question. My ggrandfather was a millwright. He came to Carlinville (from Germany) sometime in the 1860's (to the best of my knowledge). My question is...does anyone know if immigrants were sponsored at that time...and if it may have been likely that he came, specifically, to work on the courthouse? I know they stayed until after 1881 when their youngest child was born. They moved to St. Louis after that. Is there any way to find out if that was the situation? I mean...are there any records of who did the fancy carpentry on the courthouse? My husband questioned this possibility. We were so fascinated by the structure and its history. If anyone knows anything about this or where we may secure such information, we would love to know. Again, many thanks to each who responded to my query about how to best utilize our time there. It was delightful! Marianne/VA

Even try clicking on the link "USA National & States A-I" at the target "Rosters." I just wrote a guy listed on that page who might know something about my Carter in the 40th IA Infantry killed in Paducah. Doesn't it? I told you it did. Just doesn't stop. Don't think we have it on the Macoupin CW Main page. Guess Eric could put it on his "To Do" list. I almost heard those nice words all the way down here.<g> Gloria

It had the heading "VA >MAN TRYING TO FIND FAMILY TO RETURN BIBLE.' The article reads "YORK, Pa. - A Virginia man is trying to return a 100 year old Bible to the descendants of a York County, PA family. But finding them has not been an easy matter. Julian Gordon of Newport News, VA. > Came into possession of the Bible last year, when his father-in-law died. His father-in-law had purchased the Bible in 1973 at an auction in Delta. But trying to find the family, Gordon doesn't have much to go on -- just a few names written inside and eight photographs. The name that occurs frequently is Stough. The York County telephone lists about 145 numbers for homes and businesses under that name. Gordon tried calling some of the Stoughs. A few were openly skeptical, apparently think the call was some kind of hoax..............." Inscriptions, photographs, and papers inside the bible tell: "it was given to Harry Isaiah Stough by his mother, Savannah on 25 Dec 1885. Harry had a brother named Ammon, who married Minnie F Welk. They had at least three children: Marie Florence; Laroy George; and Raymond Welk. Other papers mention Sevannia Wantz Stough and Lydia Wantz. The pictures were taken at Jeffres Art Studio in York. Mr Julian Gordon, according to the newspaper article has said he will send the bible and contents to anybody who can tie their family to Ammon and Harry Stough. The newspaper quotes him "It's there. I'll send it to them. I'll pay the postage," This will be quite a find if the right family can be located. Please pass this message on to other lists. We would all appreciate finding it if it was our family bible. 3. Hi, I am also researching the Farrar Family. My husband's gggrandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Farrar who married William Duncan in Clyde,Macoupin IL. I feel certain that she is the daughter of Green Wesley Farrar. I have Green W. born 1800 NC, m. Laura (Lura) Sinclair. Green's father was William Franklin Farrar b. 1781, Caswell Co. NC, m. Elizabeth Brekeen. The 1850 census for Macoupin Co. IL shows Green W. Farrar age 50, (pg. 313, Dwg. No. 4, Family No. 4, with Lusa age 42, George W. 23, Thomas J. 17, Nancy J. 15, Laura Ann 9, Green W. 7. In Dwg. No. 6, Family #7, I have William Duncan 28, Sarah E. Duncan, age 22, and D. W. Duncan, age 2. We know that Sarah's maiden name was Farrar fom a copy of their marriage record. As you can see, the age of 22 for Sarah fits between George W. and Thomas J. Farrar, and since she and William Duncan were married in 1847, she would no longer be in her father's household for the 1850 census. Does anyone have any information on this family. Please if you can help me connect Sarah Elizabeth to the family of Green W. Farrar, please let me know. I'll gladly share what I have with anyone. Thanks, and God bless, Marilyn
