    2. Gloria Frazier
    3. Hope this great group of genealogy researchers all have a great Thanksgiving. Hope all who are driving will stay awake and drive defensively. If we have new researchers out there, I am researching mostly in northern Macoupin County the surnames of Adcock, Carter, Coverdill, Hays, Nash, Sutton, Richards, and Warren. Gloria Frazier Recd this from the ILGenWeb State Coord Susan Tortorelli: On the First Day..... We give thanks for the fresh turkey feast and its hot trimmings. On the Second Day..... We bless the cold turkey sandwiches, sloshy cranberry sauce, and hard rolls. On the Third Day..... We praise the turkey pie and vintage mixed veggies. On the Fourth Day..... We thank the pilgrims for not serving bison that first time, or we'd be celebrating Thanksgiving until April. On the Fifth Day..... We gobble up cubed bird casserole and pray for a glimpse of a naked turkey carcass. On the Sixth Day..... We show gratitude (sort of) to the creative cook who slings cashews at the turkey and calls it Oriental. On the Seventh Day..... We forgive our forefathers and pass the turkey-nugget pizza. On the Eighth Day..... The word ''vegetarian'' keeps popping into our heads. On the Ninth Day..... We check our hair to make sure we're not beginning to sprout feathers. On the Tenth Day..... We hope that the wing meat kabobs catch fire under the broiler. On the Eleventh Day..... We smile over the creamed gizzard because the thigh bones are in sight. On the Twelfth Day..... We apologize for running out of turkey leftovers. And everybody says Amen.

    3. Matt, and Mt. Olive Researchers, Matt, I am sending this reply to the list, because I think it is information to be shared. Some of the information I sent to Matt was taken from a book I picked up at the newspaper office in Mt. Olive one of the times we visited, titled, "Remembering Mt. Olive, a Picture Scrapbook"! By Carl L. Stanton, assisted by Linda Hasquin, both from the Mt. Olive Herald Newspaper, published in 1993! They have also published a book, titled, "Week By Week", without pictures. I thought I had that one, as well, but do not see it at the momment. The most frustrating is that the book has no index at all. Not complaining, at all, as the book itself is a wonderful photo history of Mt. Olive. I have on many an evening, sat and paged through it, getting a wonderful feel for the community my Grandmother was raised in. It would just be so much more useful as a tool, if it were indexed. Some photo's are from the late 1800's, many are later; some have the names of the subjects, many do not. Some say who provided the information, many do not. Many of the group Comunity High School Seniors photos are included (1935 - 1992). My husband and I visited Mt. Olive on two or three occassions. I am sure we caused a bit of conversation as we criss crossed the town, begged for information and help, walked the cemeteries, etc. for 3 - 4 days (with out of state plates on our car), and then disappeared, as quickly as we came (off to dig in Carlinville - Grin!). I have done enough research to feel that certain families I almost know well enough to be friends, inspite of the fact that I am sure those names were not the ones my family associated with (out of their league?). The WHITEHOUSE'S, NEIMANN'S, SCHELLER'S, DROSTE'S, KEISER'S, STIEL'S, PRANGE'S and others, are almost as well known to me as members of my own family. The photo's of German Day, Sept 4, 1911, are especially dear to me (my Gr. Grandma died on Aug. 6, 1911. Was my Grandma still there for the German Day Celebration (would she have stayed a month after coming so far for her mother's funeral? Or did she go back to North Dakota?). Did she even make it time for the funeral? My Grandmother, her mother and her step-father came to Mt. Olive in 1892. A year later, the step-father was dead (horrid mine accident), and in 1911 her mother was dead, and had left five "infants", as they were called in the court records. None stayed in the area. My grandmother, the oldest, was already living in North Dakota, William Schultz joined up during WWI, and never returned to the area, Meta Hillmann m. a Unknown Williams (from Macoupin Co?? I do not know), and she left as well. Theresa Hillmann ended up in Oregon, with maybe a stop in North Dakota. The two youngest boys, Walter and John Hillmann were put into guardianship of the Keisers. John went to MI, and Walter to the Chicago area, as adults. They were just 8 & 11 years old when their Mom died. The last documentation I have is the confirmation picture for Walter in 1913 of my family, in the area. I was lucky enough to have visited Mt. Olive BEFORE they tore down the Immanual Lutheran Church. Cold chills still run up and down my spine as I recall standing in the same place my Grandmother and her mother stood so many years ago. Maybe somebody knows if these books are still available. If you have Mt. Olive connections, I recommend getting a copy of the books. At least to me, genealogy is more than just names and dates. The history and feeling that these books have given me is just wonderful. And if you ever have a chance to visit the area your ancestors grew up, I can only say I do not think you will ever regret it. Sorry for the length of this. 3. Hi Matt, There is a Bruse Allen Dworsack, b. 29 June 1938, d. 28 Sept 1990 (was in US Army), buried in Mt. Olive City Cemetery. There was an Annie Dworsack in Room 2/C (2nd grade, maybe) in the Mt. Olive Public School, year 1899-1900. There was a Frank Dworsack in Room 4 (4th Grade ?) in the Mt. Olive Public School, year 1900-1901. Note: I transcribed these several years ago from the Mt. Olive newspaper and have a card file of 314 names, for a two year period, 1899-1901. For some reason, both of these only appear the one school year. (Have I already given these to you? Looks familiar!) 3. Happy Thanksgiving to ALL ! - For those that are interested, we have began to move our cemetery information pages to : http://genweb.net/~hinton/ The Washington County township maps are there. This is being done with less graphics on the start page, and supposedly no banners, ads, or pop-ups. We hope this helps those who were discontented with the problems and slowness created by those extraneous items. Please e-mail all comments and suggestions, or ideas to mhinton@ctnet.net We will appreciate any and all input into this project. - Best Wishes and Good Luck, Wayne & Marie Hinton mhinton@ctnet.net whinton@litchfieldil.com http://genweb.net/~hinton/ http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/3564

    1. Re: [ILMACOUP-L] Wright Brothers in Hagaman circa 1900

    3. HI Don, I don't know about their Hagaman connection, but one man who worked for them was Arch Hoxsey, who was born in Staunton and had relatives in Staunton. Arch's obituary says he exhibited with them. Arch was killed in a crash of his bi-plane at an airshow in Los Angeles on New Years eve, 1910. You might try writing to the museum at Wright-Patterson Airbase in Dayton, OH. They could perhaps direct you where to look for info. Its a neat museum of old airplanes. Dayton is big on the Wright bros. Mary ------------------------------------------ I am trying to find information about the Wright Brothers. According to info in the Western Mound section of the 1979 book, "The Story of Macoupin County", they came to Macoupin County around 1900, staying the winter in Hagaman. They had come up from Alton to ask the Hagaman general store owner, C.C. Robinson about investing in their work of inventing an airplane, which he did not do. Why they were in Alton in the first place is another question. According to the story, the Wrights spent the winter in a back room of another store building in Hagaman and spent their time hunting and trapping, and studying the flight of birds. They possibly spent another winter there as well. I have not yet found any documentation regarding this elsewhere. The bios on the Wrights which I can find on the web gloss over this period, beginning in detail with the spring of 1900 when they began corresponding with Octave Chanute, another aviation pioneer, who lived in Chicago. That summer they flew their first glider at Kitty Hawk and the rest is, well, history. However, what happened before in their private lives is somewhat murky. While not strictly genealogy, these events could have touched on the lives of our Macoupin County ancestors so I thought there might be some interest. If anyone knows more please let me know.
