Not sure you have time to get it for Christmas, but the Macoupin County Gen Soc has a new cem book out. I ordered it and sent a few extra donation dollars to the society. The county cemeteries should be getting close to all being transcribed. Gillespie City Cemetery is close to being done according to Mary McKenzie. Not sure what other cemeteries are left. Bob, Here is the site for the "birthday calculator": http://enws347.eas.asu.edu:8000/~buckner/bdform.html> Some of the obits that were printed in the Staunton Star-Times are also from the areas of Sawyerville, Livingston, & New Douglas. Several of the places of death of the persons in these obits were in other cities in IL & St Louis. >... do you know of anyone else that has posted Macoupin Co. obits > from other sections such as Girard and Palmyra? No, not from Girard or Palymra. There is a site that has some obits from the Livingston newspaper... someone sent it to me last week..I'll have to find the URL for it.. Will look it up & post it to the Macoupin Co mail list this evening. Joan

Hello, This is a general query to anyone who may have information about Blacktown. This was a temporary group of buildings and tents constructed under the trestle north of Staunton during its building in the summer of 1913. I would be interested in anything, either text or photos available on the building of the trestle. I have some letters to my grandmother, called the Blacktown News, written by Nettie Fleming. Some of the Surnames listed in these letters are as follows, SCHMUTZLER, DINGERSON, RAMSEIER, ROZIER, GINDELL, STIEGEMEIER, STIFF, SMITH, RUTHER, HERMANNS, BEYREUTHER, FISCHER, MCCULLEN, STILLIE, STRUCK, BUB, BAKER, KAESAMAN, MILLER, SCHUESTER, WEISENBORN, and FLEMMING. I believe this is all of them, doing a quick look through. I am certainly willing to share info, but would like to hear from anyone having info on the building of the trestle or of Blacktown. Thanks, Glenn Sheets

To all on the Macoupin County list, I have been compiling obit indexes for the Staunton Star-Times, Staunton, Macoupin Co, IL for the years 1922-1923, 1932, & 1957-1958. I am going to start posting these indexes on this mailing list which will include the name of the deceased, birth & death date. I will post these in alpha order with surname first in all caps. I have more than birth & death on most of these persons so if anyone would like more they can send me an email request personally. Other info might include (if it was available in obit): Place of death & birth, Spouse, marriage date, cemetery, & funeral home or where services were held, parents, & if there were children or siblings listed in obit. Some of these obits just gave age at death (yr, mo, da) instead of date of birth so in order to have a birthdate, I used a birthdate calculator on the Internet to come up with birthdate. This 'might' cause the 'day' of birth to be off by 1 day. If the obit gave the age as # of years old only, the birthdate will be listed as: Abt (then approximate yr of birth). If you see 'N/G' in the place of the birthdate, that means the age was not given in the obit. Also, if the female was married, the index will include both her maiden & married name. The '*' after the surname denotes her married name. I will be starting with 1922 & it will be posted in 3 sections.... 39 names per posting. 1923 & the other years will come later, how much later depends on the # of inquiries I receive for 1922 ..... & other Christmas activities.... Does anyone have a copy of the 1890 or 1900 Macoupin census handy? I'm looking for Alvin and Clara COX in the 1890, and Alvin and Clara COX with son Earl in the 1900. I intend to check later at the libray, but can't get there for a couple of weeks. Need to satisfy my curiosity. Jack Cox

Jersey County Historical Society has a project going on Veteran Burials and would like to have all Vets burial/cemetery records, who served from Jersey, who might be buried in Macoupin, Greene, Sangamon or Morgan Cos. or anywhere for that matter. As CC for Jersey, I feel this might also help our Web Page down the road, so am trying to help out. If anyone has any information on Vets from Jersey burials, would they please contact Marty Crull at <ronda@midwest.net>. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks. FERGUSON camped before he fell back to King's Mountain. Gilbert was in the commission of peace, of old Tryon County, NC, then of Rutherford. He represented Rutherford in the NC House of Common, in 1780, '82, '83, and died before 1807. Was called Col. GILBERT. JAMES HOLLAND married SARAH GILBERT in June, 1780. He was sheriff of old Tryon County, NC, in 1777 and '78; was senator and representative from Rutherford County; was also congressman, etc., and moved to Tennessee in 1811, and died in 1822. He was called Maj. HOLLAND. Both GILBERT and HOLLAND are in Draper's "King's Mountain," where a foolish statement is made that "Gilbert was a lyalist," which supposition, I have since learned, rests simply on the fact that Ferguson camped at "Gilbert--town," as though an army ever quartered on its friends in an enemy's country! Gilbert was at that time in the patriot legislature. Information also on te RODES family, of Albemarle and Hanover County, VA. JOHN RODES, of Hanover County, born 1697, was the father of JOHN RODES, of Albemarle, born 1729. His son, TYREE RODES, came to Tennessee in 1807--09.
