    1. [ILMACOUP-L] Color Coding Your Ancestors
    2. Following is one persons method of organizing their ancestors. Thought the idea may help someone. Kathie **************************************************************************** Subj: [UFT-L] Color Coding Date: 2/20/99 11:11:29 PM Eastern Standard Time From: jroos@win.bright.net (jroos) Reply-to: jroos@win.bright.net To: UFT-L@rootsweb.com Hi Polly I use a combination of magic markers, stik-on dots and colored tabs on file folders and dividers. Most come in eight basic colors, one for each grandparent. (red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple, brown, black) I have several people with the same last name in different branches of the family and this is how I keep all the Johnsons straight. I use the same colors in the file cabinet and on my Family Group Sheets and in the photo albums I stick a colored dot on the page. I color code the Family tree report also with a dot and use this as a map for researching. My mother gets two dots and I get four dots. I keep a package of slim markers in my purse when I go to the library and mark each thing I research and it is already to file and post to UFT when I get home. Hope this helps a little Joy in Wisc

    1. [ILMACOUP-L] FRYE-VIEDTE
    2. Britta B. Harris
    3. We have been researching the name VIEDTE(or close derivations). It is a name that has been included as a middle name in three generations of our Frye ancestors. Because the name was continued, we feel that it is significant to our family research. William Frye (grandson of Heinrich Frye-Germantown pioneer) and Rachel Spear Frye named one of their sons Joseph VIEDTE Frye. The name was passed on. Several Frye descendants were early landowners in Macoupin County. Eliza Frye Harris(Mrs. Thomas) was one of their sisters.Does anyone know of the name VIEDTE that may have stemmed from the Germantown area in the early 1700's? We will share data. Thank you. Britta B. Harris

    3. Virden Reporter 15 Oct 1886 ROGERS, JOHN A, the well- known proprietor of the Wild Rural Park , died at his home at that place on Monday morning, Oct 6th of dropsy, aged about 48 years. His last request was that he should be buried with his feet towards the west. the funeral took place on Tuesday and his wish complied with. The remains were interred at Sulphur Springs, a mile west of the park. Quoted from: Virden, Illinois, and Vicinity Obituaries Volume 11-1886 Through 1889 by Littleton P. Bradley. Gloria, I thought your husband might like this tidbit about why John A Rogers is buried east/west. I imagine this Wild Rural Park no longer exists. Sharon K

    1. [ILMACOUP-L] Changes at Banner Blue and Mattel
    2. I think the following may be of interest to some of our Macoupin County Mail list members: Subj: [UFT-L] Notes & News 18 Feb 1999 Date: 2/18/99 2:13:20 PM Eastern Standard Time From: rhondam@thegenealogist.com (Rhonda R. McClure) Reply-to: UFT-L@rootsweb.com To: UFT-L@rootsweb.com NOTES AND NEWS FOR FEBRUARY 11, 1999 -- PLANS FOR TLC's GENEALOGY PRODUCT LINE-UP I was not sure how many had read the message on the UFT site about TLC's plans, so thought I would include it here this week. Over the past few years, there have been a number of acquisitions of genealogy software products and developers. Because The Learning Company now owns four of the leading genealogy titles, Family Tree Maker, Family Origins, Family Tree Creator, and Ultimate Family Tree, we've heard concerns that we may discontinue development of one or more of the programs. That is not true. We are now in a position to tailor each of our products to a unique segment of genealogy enthusiasts, providing functionality that is specific to each segment. Many of you know the "Banner Blue" division of The Learning Company (we were the original developers of Family Tree Maker). Because we have the most expertise in the genealogy software category, we will be managing all of The Learning Company's genealogy products. We intend to maintain separate product teams for each brand, to enable us to preserve and emphasize the unique traits of each product. In addition to our four software programs, we are also well known for our data CDs and web sites. We will continue full-scale efforts to grow our Family Archive CD line by publishing useful genealogy data. We are committed to making valuable online resources available to genealogists at the web sites for each of our products, as well as at www.GenealogyLibrary.com. Currently, The Learning Company and Mattel have agreed to merge. While that is not yet final, we believe that the history and success of the "Banner Blue" organization will lead Mattel to leave our group on its current track without major changes to our structure or business. The acquisition is expected to be finalized by April 1999, and as the two companies are integrated, we will continue to communicate with you about any changes. We at The Learning Company are committed to developing the best and most useful genealogy software, CDs, and web sites available. Through the years, our "Banner Blue" division has demonstrated our commitment to the genealogy community by listening and responding to your enhancement requests and product suggestions. We are excited to have such a broad portfolio of products to offer to all genealogists, whether they are just beginning to trace their roots or are established professionals. We will continue to encourage the efforts of genealogists through support of valuable national organizations such as Rootsweb, National Genealogical Society, Federation of Genealogical Societies, and others. We will also continue to offer support to smaller groups through regional grant programs, and to aspiring professional genealogists through our scholarship program. Our commitment to the pursuit of genealogy stands strong.

    3. No interstate exit at Waggoner. Take Farmersville Exit 72 off I55. West thru Farmersville. Take the county road just west of Farmersville going south to Waggoner. Down this road about 5 miles will take you right into Waggoner. Oops, if no sign at Farmersville for Waggoner turnoff, better go back into Farmersville and ask. (If the cousin who tried to find the cem and couldn't was a male, would explain why "he" couldn't find it. The "Oops" statement would be ignored by my husband. <g>) Go west thru Waggoner (don't blink or you will miss Waggoner) to the 90degree curve going north. About another mile to 90degree curve going west About another mile going west to the first county road going south. The cem is about one and three quarters mile down this road on the west side of the road. Quoted from the Macoupin County Historical Society Cem book Tombstone Revelations I (written in the early 1980's) Sulphur Springs Cem was laid out early in the 1830's. It derives its name from two springs which are on the south and east side of the cem. There is a small builing still standing known as the Sulphur Springs Union Church, which served the Christian, Baptist and Methodist denominations. It was used for a burial grounds for 50 years before it was deeded by William T Burford and Myra A T Burford, his wife, to Macoupin County for $55.00 for a Quit Claim Deed. The WPA fieldmen in 1936 measured and recorded the actual description of the cemetery. The church was also used as a school and the teacher was a Mr. Harris. There are many cholera victims buried here and many of the old graves are lying north and south which is very unusual. There are many beautiful monuments in this cemetery. Everett C. Burton who was killed in the battle at Argonne in France has life sized replica of himself standing at attention. It is complete with all his uniform, helmet, gun, trench knife, flask and bag. It is made of concrete and very, very lifelike. We have deed records and also a history of the church. Listed by Thelma Dean (Zelmer) Stewart. My note - my cousin and husband does cem stomping like a lot of us "nuts." They were walking thru this cem about dusk one eve and looked up and saw the soldier's stone and scared them to death. It is so lifelike. Gloria At 05:08 PM 2/15/99 -0800, you wrote: >I am a new subscriber, mostly I was wondering >if anyone could give me directions to the >Sulphur Springs Cemetery near Waggoner. 1. [ILMACOUP-L] Y2K Compliancy for hardware and software
    2. Gloria Frazier
    3. I am beginning to get questions on computers being Y2K compliant. Definition - any hardware and/or software showing and/or processing a YEAR DATE. I would say most or all large computer companies have their own domain as to the url code to get to their sites. Many of the newer computers are compliant. So, if you want to get to a company site, for example: Compaq computers, type in http://www.compaq.com and it will take you to the Compaq site and I found at the Compaq site a table for the different models showing the status of models beint Y2K compliant. http://www.compaq.com/year2000/year2000-cdp-htable.html Packard Bell, I typed in: http://www.packardbell.com At their site, I found this Y2K main page: http://support.packardbell.com/year2000/default.asp and a download to check your computer here: http://support.packardbell.com/year2000/affected.asp Note: Those were COMPUTERS. There are software problems, too. You better try some of your software brand sites, too. For instance Microsoft's Windows 98 program: Win 98 is said to be compliant, BUT not guaranteed 100%. Better go check the Microsoft site. And, I will stop there. If you have something to say to us on this, please try to put it in a 6th grade literacy so we can all understand. I KNOW we have some computer techie smart people on this list then there are the rest of us.<g> Gloria Frazier Macoupin County ILGenWeb CC West Plains MO

    2. Hi, Following check is for PC's not used for business purposes. Here is a simple check. Change the date and time on your computer to December 31, 1999, 11:58 PM. Wait about 10 minutes. Turn your PC off. Wait 10 minutes and turn the PC back on. What is the Date? If it is January 1, 2000. Than your PC can handle the year 2000. This is a check of the PC - not your software. If the year is not 2000 following are a few things you can do. 1. On December 15, 1999, change the date on your PC to December 15, 1998 or 1997. You can change on any date - I just picked December 15. 2. In the year 2000 every time you turn your PC on - the first thing you do is change the date to the correct date. Many older PC's will let you change the date - in the process of turning them off they revert back to a prior date. Remember - Genealogy software should not have a problem - they already use 4 digits years 1643, 1762, 1843, 1932, etc. If you are using your PC only for writing letters, using a genealogy package and surfing the INTERNET I would not worry. If you are using your PC to run a business than you will want to check with the software companies that their software is year 2000 compliant. BE VERY CAREFUL changing dates and running your own test. Do not let them scare you into expensive upgrades. If you purchased the product in the last few years they should upgrade it for free. The year 2000 did not just sneak up on them. If you have this problem please let me know. I will send you an article on a successful lawsuit against a software company - judge said they should have known. All the doctors are getting free upgrades. Check products in your household that have dates such as, VCR's, cameras and watches. The year 1900 was not a leap year - but - the year 2000 is. Leap year's are calculated by dividing by 4 - except centuries - they must be divided by 400. Happy Hunting, Kathie Mirabella

    1. [ILMACOUP-L] Absolom C. DUNCAN 1791-1849
    2. For those few of you who care and don't already have info: According to military records at the National Archives, Absolom C. Duncan enlisted for 6 months in the VA militia at Norfolk in Capt Nathaniel Wilson's Company of Light Infantry, (also known as Capt Linn's company), 7th Regiment of VA militia August 16, 1814. He was discharged (the original discharge was in the widow's application folder) at Fort Barbour, Norfolk, VA on Feb 22, 1815 having served as a private. His widow's application for bounty lands and pension indicates he died of cholera near Staunton, Macoupin County, Illinois on July 31, 1849, attested to by Dr. James M Buck. The application as indicates that they had married in Lincoln County, December 26, 1816. His widow, Elizabeth, continued to live near Hornsby in Macoupin County, Illinois, through at least 1872 (her file is actually still open in 1882). Her brother was Nathan Duncan who was one of the early pioneers of Cahokia Township. (Yes, she married a cousin, apparently). Anyone know when she died or where either of them is buried?
