    1. [ILMACOUP-L] Carpenter, Peake, Carr
    2. Wayne Neuberger
    3. I am researching the Carpenter, Peake, and Carr lines in Macoupin Co. Charles Carpenter was born in 1847 in Iowa. He and his wife Lottie Peake b. 1 Jan 1852 came to Gerard, Macoupin Co. Ill. in 1869. They lived their until after 1910 and then moved to Cle Elum, WA. Their son Frank b. 5 June 1871 in Macoupin Co. married Norah Carr, b. 22 Aug 1870, was daughter of Harmon and Margaret Carr. Does anyone have any information about these families? Thank you Leah Neuberger neuberg@inlandnet.com

    1. [ILMACOUP-L] Zinser Family in Gillespie
    2. I am looking for any trace of the Louis and Louisa Zinser (sometimes misspelled Zinzer) family in Gillespie, other than the 1860 census. They and their daughter Mary do not appear in the 1850,1855, 1865 or 1870 census. Any reference to Zinsers or Zinzers in Macoupin County would be appreciated.

    3. Looks like pre 1917-18 Macoupin land patent and deed records are at IRAD: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/m_irad.htm I am not sure these are actual deeds. Think I would call or write IRAD to make sure: Brookens Library University of Illinois at Springfield Springfield, IL 62794 Phone: 217-206-6520 Hours: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday - Friday I think for private grantee/grantor, those would be in the Carlinville courthouse. Just to be sure of what they have, you can write or call: Recorder of Deeds Macoupin County Courthouse Carlinville IL 62626 217-854-3214 You would need to go or hire a pro researcher to get copies of deeds at the courthouse. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/m_pros.htm Another easy way to get to copies of all pre 1918 deeds is thru a local LDS History Center. You can order all grantor/grantee pre 1918 Macoupin deeds from Salt Lake on microfilm listed here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/m_lds.htm --------------------------- These are the *earliest* Federal Land Patents for IL, the only land records I know which are currently online. I clicked on the word: SPISRCH at this site: gopher://gopher.uic.edu:70/11/library/libdb/landsale and, for example, entered the following for Macoupin County and the surname Taylor: county 59 and name prefix taylor (this limits your search because if there are over 1000 records for a surname, the search will only return 1000 records out of the total amt) Decipher a county number - A list of county numbers can be found here: gopher://gopher.uic.edu:70/00/library/libdb/landsale/landtabl.document (For the "County of residence" having 3 digits like 866 and 551) http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/m_land.htm#othercodes You can download actual copies of these Land Patents at another site: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov You have to enter your zip code to search. When you get to the "fill in the blanks" site, *choose your county* and from one of your land patents you found in the first search at the gopher search of landsale records, DON'T ENTER THE NAME but enter the township number and direction, the range number and direction and the meridian and you will receive all the people who owned in the specific township/range/section which will tell who the neighbors were at the time. Remember in "those" years, marriages were made tween neighbors. 2. Ellen Bisson
    3. I don't see a lot of traffic these days, but am hopeful someone who has pursued deeds and other land records from state and county sources can clarify the process for me. I recd a pub from Illinois State Archives on obtaining county records. Do I understand correctly that to request records of deeds for Macoupin between 1829-1918, I need to request same from the IRAD Unit in Springfield? Instructions also state that to "request a search of a particular county's Deed Record, contact the appropriate regional depository..." but no info on where that "appropriate regional depository" is for Macoupin (or any other IL county for that matter). The materials are equally confusing about obtaining docs relating to public land tract sales so I'm hoping someone who has followed the path before can clear away the underbrush for me! I'm specifically looking into property transactions for Macoupin & Winnebago Counties. Appreciatively, Ellen Bisson mailto:thebissons@worldnet.att.net

    1. [ILMACOUP-L] Theophilus Davis ?
    2. jeffrey mcdonald
    3. I am wondering if there are any Davis researchers on the List that might have information on a Theophilus Davis , b. 1831 KY. and was in Macoupin County around 1850 ? I have found him on the 1850 Census, at 19 yrs' old , enumerated with his mother Rebecca Davis b. 1800 KY. and with brothers , Benjamin and James , and sisters Zerilda and Mary. On the 1840 Macoupin Co. Census there is Benjamin Davis , with family that seems to fit in age . ( based on their ages on the 1850 Census ). Theophilus Davis was married in 1853 to Sarah Cummings and was married in 1863 to Rebecca Goodson. ( The daughter of Milton and Jane ( Falls ) Goodson .) There seems to be a connection between the Davis and Cummings families , in later Census records I have found Cummings children living in various Davis households. And after Theophilus Davis died ( approx. 1870 ) , Rebecca (Goodson) Davis married a Wesley Cummings. Would anyone have information pertaining to these famiies ? Jeff McDonald My Macoupin Co. 2. John D. Sissom
    3. Macoupin Researchers: This is my first posting to the Macoupin list, so I want to introduce myself. I have been researching my family history for over forty-five years, (not continously) and have a few names that are associated with Macoupin County, Illinois: BAUMGARTNER, BOTTIMER, CARRICO, CHRISTOPHER, CLARK, COWDEN, DEGROFF, DIXON, DORSEY, EVANS, HARLAN, HEDLEY, KELLY, LONG, MAPEL, NIX, RASHE, SISSOM, SISSON, SMITH, WARD and WHITE. While some of these names are native, others were just passing through and cover a period of time from 1786 to 1971. I am currently using FTW 5.0b. I am using Juno, consequently I do not have www access or the ability to send or receive attachments. My main Macoupin emphasis is on the surnames CARRICO, CLARK, DEGROFF, DIXON, HARLAN, LONG, SISSOM, SMITH and WHITE from 1827 to 1900 and perhaps later. If there are those on the list with similar interests I am prepared to exchange basic narative reports concerning the surnames so indicated. For those with whom my lines intersect, I can discuss in depth some of the events in the lives of our relatives. I am pleased to include the fact that both of my maternal grandparents are graduates of Blackburn University of Carlinville, grandfather with honors. I have their sheepskins, (and they are sheepskins). My grandfather was secretary of the Senior class of 1886 and I have some of his notes, copies of which have been submitted to the library of Blackburn College. Looking forward to some interesting discussions, Thank you, John D. Sissom - john@sissom.cx member: Wood Co Chap OGS sola fide

    3. In reply to Lucinda Shinn, My husband's gggrandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Farrar, the sister of George Washington Farrar who married Dilla Styles Stull. See the information on George's ancestors. I have no information on his descendants. If Lucinda has any information on George Washington Farrar's siblings which might PROVE that Sarah is his sister, would appreciate hearing from her (duncan1@peaknet.net) God bless you all, Marilyn

    3. Someone must have spent half a day just to type the directions on how to research Carlinville records. I'm printing it all, of course. Many thanks, good friend. I'm also saving the HTML info for possible use, later. This digest is one of the best yet. Robert
