Does anyone know if the Macoupin County Enquirer was printed in 1898? If so would there be anyone who would have access to obituaries? I am looking for one for my g-grandmother Amanda Elizabeth WADE who died December 9, 1898. She is buried in Loomis cemetery in Chesterfield. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Pat
Hello listmembers, My parents and I have long planned a "genealogy weekend" that, although mainly in Madison County (Prairietown), also included Staunton in your fair Macoupin. We began Saturday morning at the wonderful Edwardsville Library's Genealogy Room, had lunch, and continued to Prairietown's St. Peter's Lutheran Church Cemetery where mt 3G grandfather Conrad WEISHAUPT and his descendants are resting (He sold the ground to the church that he also helped to form). After that, we went to Staunton and visited St. Michael's Cemetery where 3G grandfather Bernard (Ben) ACKERMANN and some of his kin are buried. "Grandpa Ben" built several of the brick buildings in town there. His youngest daughter only recently passed on at the age of 99. Having had a *most* enjoyable day, we were returning to my home in Godfrey when, just south of town, we were struck head-on by a *very* intoxicated driver. Although we all sustained considerable injury, we still have our lives. I like to think that my ancestors were looking out for us. Remember, it can happen to you - not just to "someone else"! Always wear your seat belt and insist that your passengers do the same. I'm sure you all want to live long enough to "complete" <grin> your family histories. Mike Bozovich

Hello, all! I am new to this mailing list. I am looking for information on my gg-grandmother's brother, Bernard Flaherty. He was born in Harrison County, West Virginia around 1871. In 1900, he was living with his sister and her husband in Clarksburg, West Virginia and he was working in the coal mines there. At the time of my gg-grandmother's death in 1927, Bernard was living in Sawyerville, IL. Since Sawyerville has a coal mining history as well, my guess is that Bernard worked in the mines there. On the Macoupin County ILGenWeb site I found information on the history of Sawyerville. It said that in the article, “Sawyerville Is Beauty Spot of Macoupin Cities”, Litchfield News-Herald, 28 May 1936, one of the names mentioned was Barney Flaherty. Can someone help me find out what is written about Barney Flaherty in this article? I'm wondering if this is my Bernard Flaherty. Thank you very much for any help you can provide. I am searching for information on Mabel WILSON who lived in Virden in the early 1880s. Her mother, Margaret was a widow, born in Ireland. There were several children : William, Joseph, Mable and Celia who was the youngest. This was a catholic family. Margaret was apparently still living in Virden in the late 80's and early 1890. Mabel married Francis (Frank) C. OSBORN in Moultrie County in 1884. They lived in Girard, IL. Mabel was my g-grandmother. Any information on her mother Margaret would be most appreciated. Was there a Catholic church in Virden in the early 1880's or nearby where there might be some records? Might there be death records available in Carlinville? Thanks so much for any assistance. I have only been looking for 20 years and managed to meet up with a local inhabitant, who took me right to the place. All the tombstones are broken and buried. It was shown on an 1875 plat map and on the 1975 USGS topo map of the area. Problem is, that is it on private land and the owner is refusing to let us clean up the area. It is in the middle of briars, poison ivy and garbage dump. My husband is a pilot and using the topo map and the other coordinates, he has determined that the cemetery is at these coordinates: 39 degrees 01' 02" N Gillespie South 89 degress 48' 05" W Gillespie South It is within eyesight of the Staunton City Cemetery. Thanks for your help. I just want to get this cemetery "on the books" . They are building a large subdivision, directly across the railroad tracks from the cemetery.. I have no Proctor's in my list. Would like to know what sign Joann is talking about - please write me. Almost everyone in the Wheeler Cemetery is related either by birth or marriage. Sometimes it is called The Huddleston Cemetery. My interest in genealogy was sparked in the Wheeler Cemetery. I was there with my grandmother and she was telling me how I was related to the different individuals. I saw Jehu Wheeler's stone and became fascinated. Ran to the car and got paper and pen and started writing down what my grandmother was saying - still have those notes. We than had to go back to all the other cemeteries we had visited in Macoupin so I could write down what the stones said. My grandmother was delighted. Just wish she was still here so I could show here all I have found on these relatives she so loved. Wanted to name my son Jehu - he is so happy I didn't do that. Happy Hunting, Kathie

NBC News will be airing a week-long series on genealogy called, "Finding Our Roots," Beginning this Monday - 19 April. Also, TIME magazine, April 20, 1999, issue, has cover story, "How to Search For Your Roots, Genealogy is America's latest obsession. And thanks to the computer, its as easy as one, two...tree!" I bought my issue last week - you may find it at your local library. Kathie

I think this is genealogy related and that we should all pray for these people and their families. I just heard 3 are dead, one being the shooter. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A gunman opened fire at the Mormon church's Family History Library today, wounding at least five people before he was shot by police. Police Sgt. Ken Hanson said the gunman fired a small-caliber handgun, and the wounded included a police officer. Two people in critical condition were transported to LDS Hospital. The library is directly across the street from Temple Square, site of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Salt Lake Temple and Tabernacle.

Hi Julie, Sorry I'm so slow answering. No problem about asking about your ancestor. The book is just an index which lists name, date of death, date of newspaper, age. The book has been out for quite a while. I have some notes that aren't included in the book. I'm sending what I have, as follows: Staunton Star Times, issue of Oct. 1, 1897, page 8. Jake Lang, born Oberriexingen, Wurtemburg, Germany. Died Sept. 29, 1897 at the age of 78 years. He died at the home of Leopold Schaefer. Cause of death was malaria fever. Rev. Stoerker conducted the funeral. He had five children; 3 in Ohio, 1 in Michigan and 1 in Wyoming. He came to Staunton about 8 weeks ago. He came here to visit his niece, Mrs. Schaefer. *From St. Paul's Evangelical church book: Name is Jacob Lang. Born Sept. 05, 1817; Born Ober Ricksinger, Wurtemberg, Germany.
