Hello, Nice to be among you. I am in need of help in trying to locate a couple who used to live in Virden, IL. I only have the last name of the man, Mead(e). I am told he was a bricklayer. He was married to Mary Sharp. I hear that they traveled quite a bit after they retired, living only a few months of the year in Virden. As far as time frame, well, I can only guess. The woman who related this to me graduated high school in 1937. Mary Sharp would have been her first cousin but perhaps a little older. So, I will guess that these peope lived in Virden around 1940 to 1960. Sorry to be so unprecise. I hope someone within in the group either lives in Virden and can check records or perhaps a reverse directory exists listing the people in Virden. I understand it is quite small. I figured everyone knew each other. Thanks for any efforts you make on my behalf. Cordially, Richard Sergeant

Found 'em! bearings, that is. I wanted to let everyone know I am working on the 1860 census and to give you the excuses why it isn't up...... I am looking at a week or two to start getting the pages up. The typing. The proofreading. I decided I would take one at a time so I wouldn't "burn" like I did on the 1850. Setting up/sorting. Littleton Bradley, compiler of the book, who gave me permission to use his 1850 and 1860 had put the 1860 ALL in alphabetical order but included good sort columns to put back into original page/census taker order. I almost slip in my thinking once in awhile ----hmmm, working from the original might have been easier. Then the faded and hard to read pages changes my mind. What a major and lengthy task Littleton had in completing his book! That is another email....... Having left the setting up/sorting until the last few days I found a major sort problem (at least for me) in Excel on the column for census taker pages which I thought the most important. Yes, I need a course/practice in the Access program (database program), but I don't take the time. Sooo, still using Excel. If I knew Access, I could ask David Arnsmeyer or Charlie Neff, who just told me he uses it all the time, First problem was removing trailing spaces and errors. Lost my macro for trailing spaces which works great and which Frank Oglesby sent to me. His email address is broken so hope he is ok. So removed my trailing spaces manually which weren't many. Another problem was sorting alpha numerical entries like A1, A23, A111. They wanted to sort in A1, A111, A23. Doug, the husband, came thru last nite after I played with it for SOME hours. I knew I had to have some kind of custom sort but wasn't a master of that either. He isn't either but his "Spock" mind will figure it out. So, I now know how to do a custom sort at least on the type of entries A1, A23, A111. If interested in how to do that, holler. Another problem was I am still using Excel for 95 and a sheet will only take 16,384 rows. After I stripped headings, etc, there are about 23,000 rows for the 1860. Well, with the sort problem taken care of, I can live with two files for now. The week or two to get things going entails the sorting, dividing into the page breaks, eliminating columns and/or replacing columns with meaning substitutes for numbers, adding the copyright info and basics for the html page, uploading, listening to the complaints, redoing, reuploading and keeping any sanity I may have left. Let's see.......555 typed pages......wonder how many pages I can use on one page to make the time for downloading a page so no user will SCREAM/USE THOSE CHOICE WORDS at me?? That is my jabber for now. And, you have to promise that you have skimmed this enough to know why the 1860 isn't up and you won't need to SCREAM at me!!! Well, at least for a couple of weeks.......... Thanks. To any that may have wondered or may yet one day wonder, LDS Film No. 1689023 does in fact appear to reproduce the Naturalization Loose Papers 1849-1887 indexed at ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/il/misc/naturalization/natural.txt The quality of the film I reviewed was very poor. Perhaps 5% of the papers are too dark to even make out a single word. It appears that they were having exposure problems as others are also too light. Most of the film which is readable is blurry, some with double images. But I estimate that one could decipher about 90% of the film if they tried hard enough. Few of the papers would make suitable photocopies, however. I assume the problems I saw were not unique to the film I had. I am hoping IRAD either has a better filming or will make copies from the originals because, now that I have a date, I can get a copy from IRAD. As for content, the papers I saw generally included both intention and final papers. Later papers were mostly fill in the blank forms, earlier papers handwritten letters--probably a notary public. My experience has been that naturalization papers from the mid 19th century were not informative by nature, but these seemed to be about as informative as any. Mine at least had the county of origin in Ireland of my ancestor. The papers are organized roughly, if not rigorously, based on date of final papers. I can understand why IRAD will not search without the date since only a careful page by page search will turn up results otherwise. I estimate that the whole film could be reviewed in about an hour. Most papers are accompanied by a copy of the back of the page which has the name written on it. For this reason, you don't have to search each letter or form for the name, but can just check the name on about every other page....An index and page numbers would speed things up though! Hope someone finds this information useful. Good Hunting. Mark W. Strohbeck strohbmw@wt.net

The Macoupin County Historical Society will hold their Spring Festival on May 29 & 30, 1999 at the Museum Grounds on Breckenridge Street in Carlinville, IL. There will be almost 200 craft booths and several demonstrations, including weaving, whittling, sheep shearing, wheat threshing, blacksmithing, basketry to name a few. The mansion/museum is open for tours for donations of $2.00 per adult and $1.00 for child. Admission to the Festival is free. We have a one room school house and another building filled with antiques for touring. The Agriculture Club will have various antique tractors and machinery on display. The Blacksmith Shop is also very interesting to observe. Entertainment of guitarists, barber shop quartet, strolling minstrels, is also provided. Food served will include chicken and noodles with homemade biscuit, BBQ sandwiches, and Illinois grown (not California or Mexico contaminated) strawberries freshly picked and hulled with homemade shortcake. MMMmm Good! ----------------- I have attended this festival a time or two and it is great! Food is superb and the people very friendly.
