I have been researching a John M. Braden who enlisted in Company A, 40th Inf Reg. IL. on 25 July 1861. He claimed residence in Knight's Prairie. Not sure it is even in Macoupin Co. Anyone heard of it? Jere Braden
Hi, I have just joined the list thanks to the Macoupin County web pages. All my genealogy research has been in the UK since I only move to Pennsylvania relatively recently. My great-grandmother only had one brother, James BIRDSALL born 1826, Pontefract, Yorkshire, England. Their father was James Birdsall. I knew nothing else about James, the son, and assumed he had died young. Then, a Yorkshire deed was unearthed dated 1858 which said that he was a store keeper in Alton, IL. This was confirmed by the 1861? Madison County directory. Then by chance a search gave me "James BIRDSALL, Jr., 1871 Madison County" for Chesterfield Township, Macoupin County from the 1875 Atlas of Macoupin County. My thanks to whoever was responsible for putting those details onto the Web. At this point I do not know whether the James Birdsall who moved to Chesterfield County in 1871 was the James who was born in England or his son. I hope I can discover James' descendents and possibly some American cousins. I will need to pick up details about US genealogy on the way, so please bear with me. Sincerely, Frank Birdsall Lake
FYI - Ancestry now has a huge database of Civil War Soldiers - here is the site: www.ancestry.com then select new databases. Hope it helps someone -- Debi Fort Myers, FL df620@gate.net - - - - - - - - - Researching: Faris in TN (1812) & IL (1817)
I checked this database and could not find any of the 3 relatives I checked for. There were millions of men in the war, so this site probably has only a fraction listed at this time. Thanks for the lead, however. Maybe most of you saw Rootsweb's Acceptable Use Policy in the weekly RootsWeb Review but, if not, I would like to remind you that your posts to these lists are in the public eye and are archived for searches by the public. If you quote from copyrighted material in a public forum then you could be liable to the copyright holder. You should assume any book under 75 years old is copyrighted. You say births, deaths, can't be copyrighted? If the compiler put one intentional mistake in their unique compilation to catch a thief, the compiler would win in a court of law. What we do privately is our business. I do not want and not my intention to stifle helping researchers who are new or so many miles away from resources if we might be able to help with the resources we have at hand. Please read carefully. ********* Originally posted by Rootsweb in June 17, 1999 RootsWeb Review (vol. 2, No. 24) (1) HAVE FUN. Several of you folks have helped me by telling me how to get to a certain cemetery in Macoupin County. Now, I need someone who has an index to Macoupin County cemeteries to see if the people have a visible headstone in said cemetery. I don't want to drive 400 miles and find no stone to photograph. You better heed this one. Check at the Symantec site url listed at the bottom of this message. gf - -------------------------- Below is a warning about a new virus. Don't open any file called "zipped_files.exe"! ======================================================== "Worm.ExploreZip" contains a very malicious payload. "Worm.ExploreZip" utilizes Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, and Microsoft Exchange to mail itself out by replying to messages in your Inbox. The payload of the worm will destroy any file with the extension .h, .c, .cpp, .asm, .doc, .ppt, or .xls on your hard drive(s), as well as any mapped drives, each time it is executed. The worm will also search the mapped drives for Windows installations and copy itself to the Windows directory, and then modify the WIN.INI file. This will infect systems without e-mail clients. You may receive this worm as an .zip file attachment named "zipped_files.exe". When run, this executable will copy itself to your Windows System directory with the filename "Explore.exe", or your Windows directory with the filename "_setup.exe". The worm modifies your WIN.INI or registry such that the file "Explore.exe" is executed each time you start Windows. Worm.ExploreZip was first discovered in Israel and submitted to the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center on June 6, 1999. Several antivirus companies are offering a download for detecting and destroying "ExploreZip". Network Associates is offering its Internet virus protection service McAfee Clinic ( www.mcafee.com ) for free until July. Users can download a plug-in, and their PCs will be scanned for viruses -- including "ExploreZip" -- automatically when they are online. Data Security provider Data Fellows is offering an update at www.datafellows.com/ . Symantec Corp. has posted an update to its Norton AntiVirus software at www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/worm.explore.zip.html . Gene Pennington
Hi all, I'm new to this list so I thought I would give ya'll my family and see if we have any connection. I'm at a loss with my ggrandmother. I can't seem to find anything on her. I was told that she might of been a twin. My grandmother didn't EVER talk about her mother. So what follows is everything that I have. Peter Coreil (Corel, Correll, Coriell) m. Lena ? Henrietta Coreil (Corel, Correll, Coriell) b.24 Oct. 1882 Plainview, IL d. 30 May 1955 Alton, IL m. Henry Hebruck b.26 Sept. 1884 Honolulu Islands, HI d. 24 Mar. 1946 Alton, IL I don't know anything else as of yet. Any connections?? Thank you Patti
Hi Gang, Some of my ancestors and their siblings or parents and family are buried in the Fishback Cemetery in Carlinville, Macoupin County, Illinois. I am looking for reasons that a person would be buried in a small, private cemetery in the 1850 to 1880 timeframe, other than convenience. I have a suspicion that they are related, for persons with the same surname lived next to them in Kentucky. If anyone is researching the FISHBACK line, I would like to discuss the other lines that mingle with them. Thanks, John D. Sissom - JDSissom@Juno.com member: Wood Co Chap OGS sola fide
I have been stumped trying to find a trace of Louis Zinser, wife Louisa and daughter Mary in Gillespie around 1860 other than the federal census. Their surname was misspelled Zinzer by the census taker. Louis was a gristmiller. I tried the state and federal censuses before and after with no luck. I wrote Freda Price upon the genealogical society's suggestion, but she never responded. Any suggestions? Thanks. Jon
