To all searchers on every name DON'T EVER GIVE UP!!!! Just when you think you have looked everywhere possible for your lost ancesters you stumble over a real find. I have been searching for the caretakers of my g-g-grandfather and his bro/sis (FAULKNER) for about 15 years. I knew they were either in Macoupin County or Washington County, IL but didn't know who had custody of them after their father died. It was not relevent to my search but Very Important to me. Yesterday I was just scanning through the Macoupin County 1860 Censis when I came across a 15 year old girl named Martha A. FORTNER and she was the only one in her family! My curiosity up & I began scanning all the F's (figured I would try T's next) when lo & behold, I found 5 of my other children listed as FORTUNE!!!! I was still missing on boy, 15 year old Robert Ross Faulkner. GUESS WHAT! He was listed under ROSS. The Faulkner had been completely dropped. So when you begin to feel there is no hope, LOOK AGAIN!! and again , and again. Love to all you searchers from Judy C, Terre Haute, Indiana
Gloria, You probably already know this but I will send anyway. In Lake Cemeterey in Lamar MO. Geo. A. Bandy 24 Mar 1843 - 20 Apr 1922 ssw Martha 4 Oct 1846 - 22 Jan 1929 In the 1870 Barton county census I find the following: Eastfork Township # 62 - 62 Isaac Martin 27 IL Fannie 27 MO John 5 IL Joseph W. 3 IL Fannie 3/12 MO Eastfork township no longer exhists. It was in the northwest corner of Barton county and gets its name from the east fork of Big Drywood Creek which runs in a general south to north direction in the western side of Barton county. Not too far form the Martin household is that of David CRUM who was from Macoupin county. Perhaps others in the area were as well.I am not acquainted enough withthe names to know who else, but many of the families show an IL connection in the census listings. Other names that show ILLINOIS are: James BANDY; Dennis SPRINGER; Stephen CASTER; Alexander EDMMINSON; Amasce BRIGGS; William CURLESS; Arthur JARRED; John PIPER;George W. ETTER;Anthoney GILMARTIN; John ETTER; Alexander SWARTZ; Jessee STOUT; James HARBOUR; Levi HARBOUR;Eliaha HARBOUR; Hamilton LIVES; Elias LOVE; Robert SACKETT; William HARBOUR; Isaac MARTIN (listing given above ); John CRERY?; John GOULD; Jacob BURGE; Lorenzo BEVANS; Martin FLETCHER; Betsy KNOWLS; Jessee KNOWLS; James HARRISON; Cornelius SHANGER or SAWYER?; Edwaard LYON; Thomas CURLEN or CURLESS?; James PRENTICE; John DAWSON; James MORRIS; John MORROW; Lewis McCOY; Newton HARBOUR. This neighborhood is very close to and just south of the line with Vernon county, likely there would be connections across in Vernon county. I know there were more CRUM families just over the line. I certainly do know Milford and the Horse Creek area. Your description of the Chapman Store fits to a tee, the lady was Ester CHAPMAN, now deceased. Milford is inthe notheast corner of Barton county and 25 - 30 miles from the old Eastfork township of the above census listing. Regards, Warren
****Urgent Hurriedly, so if my facts are incorrect, please let me know. --------- Couldn't get into the cemetery on a farm last Memorial day??? Farmer wouldn't let you in??? Stones being piled up against a fence??? Can't get in to upkeep??? The State of Illinois Comptrollers Office is holding Cemetery Care meetings. There is a State of Illinois Comptrollers Office meeting on Cemetery Care in Marion County IL today. I don't have the time of the Marion County meeting or the place. My second hand information on Marion Co is that there is $125,000 in funds which isn't being used for cemeteries. Some one from the Marion Co area might clarify this information for us. Not sure about this Bandy line. Mine would have been George and Martha Sutton Bandy. Obituary appeared in the Lamar Democrat Thursday, April 27th, 1922, for George Bandy. Jacque York Sparks retrieved this obit as her Mary Sutton York, sister of Martha above was in Barton Co, too. My Sutton was John Sutton, brother to the above two Sutton girls. I sure appreciate your checking. I have been to Barton County and you will prob know this description. My father wrote down that his mother Nancy Martha Jane Sutton was born on Horse Creek near Milford Barton Co MO. I went to Milford and stood on Horse Creek which was just a little outside of Milford. Can't remember but the population of Milford was less than a hundred people. We stopped at a little store that looked abt ready to shut down. The lady's husband had passed away and she was elderly. At least, we got a pop and ice cream there. It felt good to think I had stood prob close to the footsteps/horseshoe steps that my ggrandparents had taken on Horse Creek. Now, I believe it was you who mentioned an Isaac Martin (senile and can't find the reference to Isaac Martin now..). I would love to know more about the Isaac Martin family and how they tied to the Martins of Moutrie Co IL where a Martin did marry into my Sutton line. One of my Dad's cousins kept a notebook which was written by an older sister of the cousin. In it she wrote that my Suttons had gone to Barton Co to work for Ike Martin but my John Sutton got sick in a few years and they returned to IL. I never knew it might be an Isaac Martin (and maybe not but sounds close for Ike Martin). I just couldn't find out who Ike Martin was. The problem in tracing my Sutton line in Barton Co. is that I feel they left after 1870 and returned before 1880 to IL for them to be included in a Barton Co Census. Probably not a big big deal but would like to return to Barton sometime and skim some stuff at the courthouse to see if I could find a "fingerprint" of my Suttons being there. Thanks so much for the info on Barton Co and when "I get it together" I will try to get a page up at the Macoupin site for "Where they went." That has been an idea in my mind but seems always covered up is my excuse........ Sorry, forgot to put Macoupin in my subject.. Pam http://members.aol.com/AAtwins94/index.htm
Anyone care to put on your thinking caps and tell me what my next step should be? I have a copy of my great grandfather's naturalization papers. According to them, he was a widower when he came over here. I saw a copy of the passenger list at FHC and there was only him and a brother listed (if I copied the passenger list, I have lost it by now...). I have never (20+ years of digging) been able to find out anymore about his wife (my great-grandmother), other than her birthdate (no burial or death date in Scotland that I can find without hiring someone, which I can't afford.). Several years after he came to the states, his mother and another brother came over and brought his 2 sons. I bought the Benld cemetery book where most of his branch of the family is buried. In the book it lists great grandpa (Wm Robertson) buried with his second wife and underneath it lists the name of Mary (this one I am looking for). So I wrote to the cemetery (just addressed it to Benld City Cemetery Board for lack of anything else) and asked if there were any further records there about why Mary's name would be listed and if there was a record of her being buried there. And in the back of my mind I am thinking I can't see anyone spending the money to bring her body from Scotland. While we were home 4th of July weekend, we stopped at the cemetery and there is no mention of Mary on the same tombstone with William and Alice (the 2nd wife). I have never received an answer to the letter I wrote (not a big surprise - probably lost by now). To futher complicate matters, the cemetery book says Mary died in 1919. William's Petition for Naturalization clearly states (dated 1915) that Mary is deceased! So, did Willie lie on his petition, and if he did why would anyone need to? Or the date in the cemetery book is wrong. But if she is not buried in Benld, why would her name be in the records? I am waiting on a death index sheet now for all the Mary ROBERTSONs. I would really apprecitate any input... Thanks, Pam
I need some assistance identifying a picture of young Keel children. Go to http://shuflin.rootsweb.com click on 'Help identify these Keel children' Would someone please pass this on to the Montgomery Co. list? Thanks, Becky
Put my ancestors on that list for Barton Co. MO, too. Clarinda Stewart who married John Tipton. Not sure when they went there, just know that Clarinda died in Lamarr, Barton Co. MO in 1926. She was my grandfather's sister and was born in 1865. So she probably went after she married, as her mother died in Macoupin Co. Her father John Reuben Stewart died in Creede, CO though in 1892. Have a lookup out to Warren to see if he can find cemetery listings. Thanks Warren, you are appreciated! Pat, My ggrandfather came to Macoupin in the 1860's. He was a millwright. I have wondered if the $1,000,000 courthouse was the attraction, particularly with his skills. I would love to know if that is why he settled there. He came from Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany. He and my ggrandmother met on the ship coming over. We have in our possession a scarf he gave her as his bond of betrothal. She settled in Waterloo and worked for the pastor of the E&R church there until they married in 1870. They lived in Macoupin until the early 1880's when they moved to St. Louis. His name was John A. Mueller...she was Matilda Petersen. Marianne/VA

Lewis KOERNER came from Wurtemburg to Bird Township, Macoupin County , probably in the early 1870s. I'd like to know about any other German immigrants who came about this time--who they were, why they came, what churches they attended, if there were many of them, etc. Pat B.
Am planning a trip to Carlinville Library in August, and have spoken to them once. At the time I was only coming for a Thursday, and those were the hours they gave me. 10:00am to 8:00pm, which is different than the Macoupin Web site lists. Does anyone know what the Friday hours are? I graduated from High School in Carlinville, but haven't been back in about 25 years. Really looking forward to this trip.
