I made my first trip to Macoupin County this week, and was charmed by the area. I found some great new information on my family (STEELY, DODSON, DANIEL, WHEELER, OWENS and WILKINSON) at both the public library and the courthouse in Carlinville, as well as friendly and helpful staff. I was unpleasantly surprised, however, to learn that the dome of the courthouse has recently been declared structurally unsound and that courthouse staff have been directed to no longer go up there to retrieve the court records that are stored there, which include items such as the earliest indexes to civil court cases, including divorces. Count me in as another one whose family who started in Macoupin and ended up in Barton County, Missouri. My Steely line did just that. My great-grandparents, William Henry Charlton and Susanna Carolyn Steely began operating the General Store in Golden City in the late 1800's. William Henry Charlton continued as its proprietor for a generation. For those of you who might be interested, I would be glad to e-mail you a photo of that general store, which shows a little of what Golden City looked like at the turn of the century. Karen Steely
I read with great interest the discussion a couple of months back concerning the migration of so many Macoupin Co. residents to Barton Co., MO. In 1866, my g-g-grandparents Thomas J. Finley and Leah Rees Finley moved from Macoupin to Barton Co. I could never figure out what prompted that move until I read the discussion about the Missouri Immigration Association. I'd be willing to bet my bottom dollar that was the motivating force behind the move. Has anyone found out any additional information about this company? Are there any other sources that could be used to research the MIA that anyone knows of? Thanks! Jill Adami

I don't think I am going to be of much help. Maybe if you can find them on census records for that period of time, they might give info on their naturalization. "If" (many are not available, I think - might call and see if and what are available and what the cost is for a search) they are available in Macoupin County, they would be in the probate records office and the address is: Circuit Clerk Macoupin County Courthouse Carlinville IL 62626 Phone: 217/854-3211 ********** Think you probably need a "close" date for immigration but you might try Polly Paskos' route - (Kansas City would include a region and not just St Louis): Quoting her: From: James Piskos <jpiskos@hsnp.com> Subject: [StLouis-MO-L] Naturalization papers To: StLouis-MO-L@rootsweb.com My thanks to the kind person who sent me info re obtaining naturalization papers. Polly Piskos ************ St Louis Public Library has a complete set of microfilm of Passenger and Immigration lists. The naturalization information page at the Macoupin County site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/m_natdex.htm (quite a few links on this page) Naturalization papers in the counties weren't a priority so I suspect many were probably destroyed or are rotting somewhere. Might want to try this route: Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1538-1940, CD 354 The information that can be found on CD354 is listed here. http://www.rader.org/cd354.htm There are some lookup volunteers for CD 354 at this site (free). Let the site come all the way up because if you don't you just get the first half of the site. The second half have the volunteers for other CDs besides the World Family Trees http://www.seidata.com/~lhoffman/cdlist.html If you find them on CD 354 or other CD, go here for an address for the INS. Write to see if you can get their records. http://www.italgen.com/immigrat.htm Another idea: LDS Film Catalog - search here: http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp or Search LDS data: http://www.familysearch.org/
I couldn't find a real driver's license history site but found: http://www.sos.state.il.us/depts/drivers/dri_home.html you might write or call that office. They might could lead you anyway. THE THE LIST: In addition to the CUMMINGS family migrating from Macoupin County to Taney Co., MO. The families of Braxton MABRY/MAYBERRY, Reuben CLEVENGER, brothers Peter LAIR & Charles LAIR Jr. went to Taney Co., MO where they were listed in 1840 census Swan twp. (Forsyth), Taney County. Another LAIR brother, William L. LAIR was in MO, prob. Taney Co. in 1841 when dau. Elizabeth was born. Charles & William L. LAIR returned to IL in time to be listed 1850 Census in Macoupin County. Reuben CLEVENGER's wife, Sarah (MAYBERRY) was a dau. of Braxton MABRY, who was early to Macoupin Co., by 1829. They may have gone to Taney Co. as early as 1836. Peter LAIR m. Elizabeth CLEVENGER & William L. LAIR m. Martha CLEVENGER, both daus. of Reuben CLEVENGER. During the Civil War (1863), Peter LAIR returned to Macoupin Co. for a short time, returning to MO in time to be listed 1870 Census in Howell Co., MO. According to an 1878 letter, "Peter and family are somewhere in South West Missouri." Have not located him in 1880 Census. The 1878 letter says Charles LAIR Jr. was living in Macoupin County, apparently dead by 1879 (History of Macoupin Co., Ills. by Brink, etc.) and not listed 1880 Census. (He's buried in Girard Cemetery...no dates (Black Hawk War) marker) (Charles' wife was Louisa MORRIS, prob. dau. Thomas...need dates of death.) William L. LAIR was named in the letter also; he is listed 1880 Census in South Otter twp. However, William's wife, Martha (CLEVENGER) was last listed 1850 Census in Macoupin County--can't find them, 1860 Census; but she was dead by 1870 Census when he was listed in South Otter. Need dates of death and place of burial for both. According to family members, Braxton MABRY d. Taney Co., MO sometime after 1840. Reuben CLEVENGER d. Taney Co., MO between 1860-70 census. Note: Two daughters have been found for Charles & Nancy LAIR: Jane m. William BRIDGES and Katherine m. Isaac PRITCHARD, both of whom were listed 1880 Census in Macoupin County--need dates of death for both. I have been working on a book of the "LAIR Family of Macoupin County" since late 1970's...striving to have it completed next year--2000. Would love to hear from other LAIR and allied family members. There were Cummings in the Plainview/Chesterfield area, below is information on Alfred B. Cummings - died in Civil War. Most, if not all of Alfred B. Cummings children migrated to Taney CO. MO and some later to the Cleveland, Oklahoma area. This group of Cummings were long associated with the Braden family as the widow of Alfred B. Cummings married James Braden b. 1819 Claiborne CO. I received some info from Ellan West on her Cummings family in Macoupin. There are a number of Cummings in Macoupin around 1850. But not that many. There is probably a link between the families. Cousins, brothers, etc. My William O. Cummings came from KY. (per census). Married in Macoupin in 1852. Son's James, Sylvester, and William. They settled in Bunker Hill. Ellan's born 1842 in Brighton, IL. In 1842 I saw another Cummings gentleman from NH on a list of early settlers with a date of 1855 in the Bunker Hill Township There must be a common ancestor among these Cummings. Anyone got an idea or thought on this? Roy Brown
Hello everyone.... My mother, Edith Lucille Heuer was born in Bunker Hill April 13, 1913. She was the only child of Harvey and Ella Heuer. My mother was raised in Macoupin County and died when I was only 15 years of age. I am trying to find anyone who might have known my mother. She would be 86 years old this year. Maybe someone out their might have known her and could tell me about her young life and might have even some school pictures. My father also died when I was 15 years old. I did not know him. My mother and I lived with my grandparents until one year before she passed away. After she died, I went to foster homes. We were all very close and it has always been a real void in my life. I have no brothers or sisters. Thank you for your help. Mary Zambrotto from Florida MEZ560@aol.com
Maria (Maud) CUMMINGS BRENNELL, born in Brighton, Illinois in approximately 1842, died May 21, 1869 at the age of 27. She was survived by her husband, John M. BRENNELL born in Springfield, Clark, Ohio on Jan 22, 1841. John M. remarried on November 19, 1871 to Louisa FURRY both residents of Macoupin County. John and Louisa's first child, Eliza, was born in Carlinville May 5, 1872. John M. and Maria had resided for a while (1865-1868) in Missouri, after the war, in Moselle, Franklin, Missouri. (Where he applied for a soldier's pension. Company C, First Kentucky Infantry. ) Evidently Maud's health was what brought them to Carlinville, where John's sister, Corilla BRENNELL BRIGGS, resided. Corilla writes, later in life, on another pension document, that she was a childhood friend of Maria CUMMINGS, John's first wife, and that Maria had no children. John and his second wife and his children are all buried in Hammond, Indiana. Whereabouts of Corilla and first wife Maria are unknown to me at this time. If there is any relation between Maria (Maud) CUMMINGS and William O. CUMMINGS, perhaps more info can be found in Brighton, Illinois?
