    3. Think Bill helped me more than I could have helped him. Does anyone have a Staunton Catholic Church (or nearby Catholic church) address, where he might write? Hey, if you all are interested in WWI original draft card info, the Jewish Genealogy text file at the url Bill mentioned has got some super info: http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/wwidraft.txt Thanks, Bill, and good luck. gf At 09:52 PM 10/26/99 -0400, you wrote: [snip] >> If it has a church named on it, >> possibly the church might have more of a record. I'd already downloaded that page, but there were so many newspapers listed, and I didn't know which would be likely to have published the obit in 1934. With your local knowledge, I now have two likely newspaper names. [snip] > No more in the Staunton Memorial Park Cemetery book than what you > have: Bummer. If it has a church named on it, > possibly the church might have more of a record. Yes, I got the application with the important stuff, but the bad news is there appear to be inconsistencies. First, the clerk spelled the groom's name differently than the groom signed it: Clerk = Gayouske vs. Groom = Gayousky. Next, he got the groom's birthplace wrong: Clerk = Austria vs. Groom orally and on census = Lithuania. We think the conversation maybe went like this: "Place of birth?" "Vilna." [Clerk to self: "Vilna? Oh, Vienna... Austria"] My academic resource on the Lithuanian-L list thinks Austria is an error, and so do I. No church is named, but it's signed by "Rev. L P Hurthmans", "a Catholic Priest". The good news is that the groom's father is given as (difficult to read) SIMAY GAYOUSKE, and the mother as (difficult to read) "AGATHA MARTELAIT. Even if somewhat erroneous, these offer a lead. > -------------- > Naturalization - if naturalized before getting to Macoupin Co - he > would have had abt 10yrs from PA to IL, and could have been > naturalized in PA. His 1910 IL census lists him in column 16 as "Pa", or having taken out first papers. Quite possible that he naturalized between then and 1934 while in IL. I've downloaded the form G-639, and intend to send it off for naturalization papers within a day or so. > I chose Philadelphia. > http://www.nara.gov/regional/findaids/phiguide.html I've been to NARA SE in Atlanta twice, and will be going again in late November. From <http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/wwidraft.txt> I've learned that NARA SE hold the originals of the WW1 draft registration records, and will do a lookup for $10. I believe I'll ask them to do that. Thank you, Gloria, for your rapid response and your tips. I've saved your posting to my genealogy folder, and will work my way through it some more. 1. [ILMACOUP-L] RootsWeb intermittent down/problems continues
    2. Gloria Frazier
    3. A Macoupin surname researcher had written about a wk or so ago about his surname not turning up on the Macoupin page search engine. I was thinking just a few more days the engine would reindex the site. I had written to the webmaster for the engine info page and hadn't got a response, yet, but the msg below from Brian Leverich of RootsWeb I guess explains it. So, the engine at the Macoupin site hasn't reindexed probably for 3 or 4 weeks thereabouts. gf ------------------ Msg below from Brian Leverich received this morn..... ----- <MODE EMBARRASSED> Besides brief downs during the day while we recabled, we also had about a 1.5 hour down this evening. The cause of the down was that a friend of RootsWeb (not a staff member) who was in the NOC tripped over a power cable and disconnected it at both ends. We immediately plugged the cable back into the wall, but failed to notice it was also unplugged at the UPS. When the UPS ran out of battery power about 7 hours later, the microwave transceiver that connects us to the Internet failed. We tracked the problem down and fixed it as soon as we could. Sorry about the down time. ### Bad news and good news. The bad news is that we're moving the last of our servers from Anaheim to our new NOC in Bakersfield tomorrow. That means that several of our servers (GenConnect and Searches, among them) will be down for four or five hours. The good news is that this will complete our move out of Anaheim, and should basically fix this rocky period. After the move is complete, we'll be enjoying significantly more bandwidth and better facilities than we had in Anaheim. 3. I was married in Sacred Heart Church in 1963. Fr. Nicholas Klink was the pastor, but he is now deceased, I believe. Sacred Heart was called the "Slovak Church", and St. Catherine's was called the "Irish" Church, based on the makeup of the congregations. St Catherines was still there in the 50's and 60's when I went to high school, but I believe it is now gone. 3. Just a reminder to those who maybe haven't visited Morgan County ILGenWeb page lately, all known Cemeteries are now online with the exception of Diamond Grove and Jacksonville East in Jacksonville. This has been a tremendous job for Shirley and myself and one that we are proud of! They are recorded by Township, so one visits this page to go to the Cemetery links: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmorgan/twp-cem.htm Gayle has sent in some 200 plus readings for Calvary Cemetery in Springfield. She plans on reading more, so keep watching. Calvary is at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilsangam/cem-calvary.htm For those of you who might have ancestors in DeWitt Co IL, Earliene has done a great job on recording some of the tombstones with pictures while on vacation this summer. She found many in deplorable condition. They can be found at: http://members.xoom.com/Earliene/pages/cemetery.htm Earliene asks everyone to notify the Comptroller's Office if they know of a cemetery that is neglected. 3. Don't know if you ever got a reply to your question or not. Illinois is not a common-law marriage state - don't believe that it ever was. I work for Social Security and one of the issues that we sometimes have to determine is common-law marriages. Very few States recognize common-law. Some have in the past but do not do so currently. I finally remembered to check our manuals today. Hope this helps you. - Judy At 11:20 PM 10/10/1999 -0500, Gloria Frazier wrote: >Anyone know the answer to that subject? > >Where is our resident attorney?? > >Gloria > > >==== ILMACOUP Mailing List ==== >To unsubscribe from ILMACOUP-L-request@rootsweb.com, send a message to > ILMACOUP-L-request@rootsweb.com >that contains in the body of the message the command > unsubscribe >and no other text.
