    1. [ILMACOUP-L] RUYLE Cemetery
    2. In a message dated 11/14/1999 7:37:14 PM Central Standard Time, glofra@townsqr.com writes: << I have the cem books for townships: Scottville >> My family and I were at the RUYLE Cemetery, two miles south of Scottville yesterday. There were 14 of us working together to clear the undergrowth and trees from the site. We had beautiful weather for it, though we weren't able to do any burning. Initially, my husband had to hack a path into the cemetery with a corn knife so we could get in to work, but the cemetery is now cleared and accessible. We are very happy with the results and plan to go back in the spring if the weather cooperates to do more work. My gggg-grandfather Moses Ruyle and his wife are buried here. Their stones are still standing. Their son, my ggg-grandfather, Littleton Ruyle is supposed to be buried here, as well, but we could not find his stone. In the spring we plan to take metal rods to probe the ground to check for stones that may have fallen and are now hidden. It was a very satisfying project! ~~Rhonda Ashby Coulter

    3. Thanks to one of our researchers who lead me to freefind.com, we have a search engine back on the Macoupin site and now have one on the Rock Island site. Think they are both picking up most on each of the two county pages. Let me know if you notice something the search engine isn't picking up or something needs changed on them. Have fun. gloria ------------------ Gloria Frazier ILGenWeb Western Regional Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/western.htm Macoupin County ILGenWeb County Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/macoupin.htm Rock Island County ILGenWeb County Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilrockis/index.html FRAZIER-L maillist

    1. [ILMACOUP-L] An Oregon Trail Researcher
    2. Gloria Frazier
    3. FYI gf ****** My interest in researching the 1851 Oregon Trail migration began several years ago when I attempted to see if my wife's 1851 O.T. ancestors, JOSHUA PETTINGILL BLANCHARD and his bride REBECCA JANE [RACE], had kept a journal or maybe were mentioned in a fellow traveler's account of the crossing. This led to the thought of sharing the wealth of documents and information I have accumulated with others who might be looking for similar documents . It seemed logical to my purpose to create a list of 1851 O.T. names, with documentation, and some sort of index of the journals and recollections I was able to find. These I obtained from published sources as well as from private family papers via email contacts. I started researching just the Oregon Trail pioneers to Oregon, but expanded my "Master List of 1851 O.T. Pioneers" to those who turned off to CA (and are so identified) and to those who went to Salt Lake City for the winter and then returned to the Trail to Oregon (and are so identified). I decided to include those Mormons whose journals I happened upon (as these Mormons often interacted with the Oregon bound folks part of the way along the Oregon Trail). But I did not exhaust the Mormon documents, as that is a major project unto itself. I am not including any of the Santa Fe Trail folks, however....again, another project for others to pursue. My "Index of 1851 O.T. Journals/Recollections" project involves gathering all of the known 1851 journals/recollections and listing 1.) the dates landmarks were reached, 2.) unusual incidents recorded along the way, and 3.) the names of other travelers mentioned. Comparing journal entries, one can then partially reconstruct the groups which traveled together at least part of the way along the journey. And sometimes all that remains of an ancestor's O.T. trek is an anecdote of a trail incident or the name of a fellow traveler which passed down through the generations. Hopefully, people searching for some tidbits about an ancestor's journey(barring the discovery of an actual document composed by that ancestor) will be able to find , through this Index (which also cites the repository) an account kept by a pioneer who made the trek across the continent with that pioneer ancestor. I am anxious to add as many names and journal/recollections as I can find. I am documenting the source and/or citing the names of the contributor of each name I include. Some are from published works, but many have been sent via email from descendants of those 1851 pioneers. I have already identified over 2,000 names & have gathered 65 journals and recollections related to the O.T. 1851 migration west. If you know of the whereabouts of 1851 Oregon Trail Pioneer names and/ or any journals they kept or recollections they wrote later, I will be happy to add them to my project. But time is running out. Since I have been working on this for several years, I have decided to end the "hunting gathering" phase of this project in December. Then comes the monumental task of preparing the results so as to be presented in a simple form for other searchers and researchers to find useful to access. That's the story. Now, I will attach a list of the 1851 O.T. journals/recollections which I have not copies of yet, hoping that some may be in a repository close to you . I do know that one is in your state (see below); there may be other there, as well. *********************** KEY: RRN= "Platte River Road Narratives" by Merrill J.Mattes,U of IL Press,1988 CWW= Covered Wagon Women,vol.3,ed. 3. Gloria is correct, the LDS has copies of the both the 1855 & 1865 State Census for Macoupin County. The Film numbers are: FHL Film # 0976670 1855 State Census for Macoupin Co., IL FHL Film #1012404 1865 State Census for Macoupin Co., IL My notes to myself concerning the 1855 film "Some of these marks may be incorrect because the film was extremely faint and difficult to read." I didn't make any notation about the 1865 film so it must have been much clearer and easier to read. I need to gather the information about the Rees(e) family, in particular Simon Rees(e) and his father Jacob Rees(e) along with their wives and children from that particular census. They would have been in Barr Twp., I believe, or Barr's Store. To date, I haven't heard "boo". I think a 4 mos. wait along with ignoring a nicely written reminder letter is a bit much though. I'd like to continue on with my research "train-of-thought" on my Rees(e) family, so if anyone has access to this page of the census, I would be very grateful for the information. It will definitely help me establish whether they were still alive in 1855 as they seem to have disappeared by the time the 1860 U.S. Census was taken. Thank you so much :-) Jill Adami

    3. Hello List, I am looking for information on the Robert Whiteley family of Macoupin Co. Robert was born in England in 1819 and married Adelaide Morris in 1853 in Macoupin Co. He farmed in Bird Twp for several years before retiring to Carlinville. They had several children, but only three of them lived...Mary Ann, Sarah and Robert. I understand there are two (if not more) history books about Macoupin Co.? One from 1879 and one from 1891? Robert may have been written up in both of those books, and I was wondering if someone could tell me where I can get a copy of the bios? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Jay Bond

    1. [ILMACOUP-L] The Year and the Day-Birthday Book
    2. Kimberly S. Ahlgrim
    3. Greetings from Ohio, I found in a birthday book given to Bettie Borough by Edith Pearson in 1909. It contains wonderful signatures on birth dates, an article and a beautifully written lineage account. I am including quotes from the article and the lineage. Some names in the birthday book: Anderson, Borough, Cherry, Harris, Brock, Weatherford, Pearson, Rutherford and much more! _____ The article is about Zebulon Cherry- here are some quotes from the article... "He put no money in his purse, but he had music in his soul." "He was intensely patriotic during the war for the Union and sang many thrilling war songs at public meetings and always brought down the house." "He was a large, hale and hearty, cheerful kind of man who captivated my boyish imagination." written by Edward Gilbert My grandmother (maternal) was Eliza Ross before her marriage to Zebulon Cherry, my mother's father. Eliza's brother, my mother's Uncle Harris was the father of Sue Ross Cole, George Washington Ross, Spencer Ross, Amanda Ross, Mary Ross, Sarah Helen Ross, Lou Ross. I'm sure that Col. John Ross, whose huge monument is in Waverly Cemetery was Eliza Ross's brother, my great uncle, and Sue Ross's own uncle that would make him Bernard's and Mancie's (sp) great uncle. This little book has provided me wonderful clues in putting together my family tree! >>> <ILMACOUP-D-request@rootsweb.com> 11/05 11:21 AM >>>
