    3. Bill, Check out the following URL for evaluations on genealogy programs. http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/stories/reviews/0,6755,295761,00.html FYI: I have used Family Tree Maker since 1992 and have upgraded it many times over the years. They come out with a new version every 6 months or so and I skip 2 versions inbetween upgrading. They also "keep you informed" about new upgrades. I downloaded the free PAF program from the LDS site, but use it sparingly. If you are looking for a good free program, then PAF should fit your needs. Larry

    3. I've have finally settled on Family Origins by Parsons Tech. Its a very good program, easy to use (especially if your not into reading manuals), has a place for your references now and the upgrades are very reasonable. You can take a look at: http://www.parsonstech.com/ then click on the site index and select genealogy. I do still use PAF but only occasionally. -- Debi Fort Myers, FL df620@gate.net - - - - - - - - What do you call a boomerang that doesn't work? A Stick!

    2. Tom Bunt
    3. Bill, 1. I use Family Tree Maker for Windows (FTW) and have found it to be satisfactory. On the other hand, I haven't tried any other genealogy software. 2. If you insist upon Windows 98 please get the "Second Edition." I know at least three persons who had 98 (1st Edition) and they either had to remove it OR they are operating their computers at reduced capacity. 3. If you anticipate exchanging files with some family members overseas, or in other states, you might want to consider software that is compatible with their programs. To my knowledge, most genealogy programs can save in GEDCOM for transfer but it is a lot easier when everyone is "on the same page." 3. Bill, I use "The Master Genealogist" (Gold Edition for the multiple indexes, etc.) by Wholly Genes, Inc. which is a great program but probably is not for everyone. It is labor intensive but is extremely flexible to be used to the way you want to set up your files...not the way in which the program wants you to set up your files. You can see and read about it at www.whollygenes.com and see sample outputs. There is also a TMG-L list that is quite heavily used by TMG uses. 2. Bill, I have - The Master Genealogist (TMG), Ultimate Family Tree (UFT) and Family Tree Maker (FTM). I use Ultimate Family Tree (UFT) for entering my data. But, use the other packages for different reasons. All packages have their plus and minus. It comes down to what a person has become use to. Ultimate Family Tree and Family Tree Maker are now owned by the same company. 1. Both The Master Genealogist and Ultimate Family Tree assume you have strong computer skills. They have a high learning curve. 2. Family Tree Maker (FTM) is the one I usually recommend for the person who wants an excellent product for entering and printing out reports and forms. Watch the boxes - they all seem to use Tree Maker in their title and it is easy to buy the wrong product. I have FTM because I like to use their CD's. 3. What I like about The Master Genealogist (TMG) is it will read in most files, they do not have to be in GEDCOM format, from other software products and convert it to TMG format. You can than create a GEDCOM file which can be used by another product. UFT until the last release would not create a GEDCOM file that I could share with others. I was afraid UFT would go out of business. If this happened I would not be able to transfer my data. 4. No matter which product you pick - It will take hours to enter your data. But, the time spent will be worth it. I recommend you enter a few generations and print out reports to test format. You may want to change how you enter the data. 5. BACKUP your data everyday - this is the first thing you will want to learn. Keep 2 sets of backups - one at home and the other at work or a friends house. 3. The jpg file format offers the most compression and smallest file sizes. It is widely used for web page pictures. If you scan your own pictures, use a scanning resolution of around 150 DPI (Dots Per Inch). Afterwards, you can use picture editing software to resize (also called resample) the picture after any cropping or editing. Resolutions of 320 X 240 or so are fine for web use. That resolution should result in a modest file size. > -----Original Message----- > From: KathieMir@aol.com [mailto:KathieMir@aol.com] > Sent: Saturday, November 27, 1999 8:26 AM > To: ILMACOUP-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [ILMACOUP-L] Need someone to explain the sending of pictures on > the INTERNET > > > Hi, > > Hoping someone on the list can explain, to the list, the > different picture > format's. Which ones to use and when to use them - seems we have to pick from bmp, jpg, wmf, fpx, psd, tif, etc. Some of us, my self included, are new to scanning pictures. My problem is what format to save the picture in. I want to be able to send pictures, over the INTERNET, to friends, family and Gloria to add to the Macoupin County, IL page. When I see it is going to take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes to upload - I abort the process. I have tried changing the format - picture looked good until the next time I went to look - now the picture is blurry. Any help greatly appreciated. Happy Hunting, Kathie Mirabella
