    3. Hi Lou, Thank you for the compliment on the Macoupin page. We have more for the page if and when I get around toit. Got too many things going, it seems. Yep, the early probate index is xeroxed AT LEAST twice and sitting on the dining room table. Yep, it is still sitting there........... Sending your message to the Macoupin County maillist. Hope someone there can help you with the 1900 soundex. I don't have access to it. I say Macoupin Muh coo pin or sometimes Muh coop in...... sooo Muhcoopin. Good luck. Gloria X-Sender: eciuno@mindspring.com X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Light Version 1.5.4 (32) Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 13:47:59 -0500 To: glofra@townsqr.com From: "L. Young" <eciuno@mindspring.com> Subject: Gloria... I really enjoy seeing your work in Macoupin. Macoupin's page is awesome. Could you or someone help me? My gf was named Ira Chestnut Young and a lot of circumstantial evidence indicates his parents were Thomas J. Young and Nancy Standley; however, in the 1880 census, his parents are shown as G. J. and Nancy Young and that he had a sister named Maggie. I suspect a clerical error. By 1900, he was probably out of the house, but Maggie may have still been at home. Is there someone with access to a 1900 soundex who could confirm Ira's parentage. Also, this may sound silly, but what is the correct pronunciation of Macoupin (Mac-u-pin or Mac-oh-pin)? Thanks much! -- Lou

    2. John M. Scroggins
    3. The WWI draft registration applied to men born from 1873 to 1900. The first registration was for men aged 21 to 31 on 5 June 1917. The second (5 June 1918) was for me who turned 21 after 5 June 1917. The third and final registration was for all men aged 18 to 21 and 31 to 45 on 18 September 1918. > -----Original Message----- > From: Joanne/erictem [mailto:erictem@earthlink.net] > Sent: Sunday, December 12, 1999 1:39 PM > To: ILMACOUP-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [ILMACOUP-L] WW I Draft Registration > > > Hello All! > > What were the age requirements for manditory draft > registration for WWI? > > I'm looking for a person born in 1866. She has also spent hours helping others with their Macoupin County research. If you have time please send Sam and Mary McKenzie a Merry Christmas or Happy New Year's card. Sam and Mary McKenzie PO Box 43 Livingston, IL 62058 Following is from Cindy Leonard on Friday, December 10, 1999, After having lunch with Sam & Mary today, I can truly say how proud I am to know all the people who so graciously have stepped up as genealogy pals & sent money, stamps, gift cards, etc. Sam & Mary are in awe of the volume of mail arriving daily. They are now in the process of looking for a place to stay during the next months as they begin to build their home again. Today they were so excited because they found their wedding album & some of the pictures were unscathed. The other day they found Sam's wedding ring; more genealogy papers; just the things you don't always think about." Thanks for your help. Kathie Mirabella

    3. Hi Bill, I have sort of let my Macoupin Co. mail stack up, and was reading some this morning and your post caught my eye. My gr.grandmother, according to her marriage application, was born in Tilsit, in which is now Lithuania. This line has been very difficult to trace, and I try to follow up on any possible connection. Here is what I know about her. Juliana Auguste Barkowski, b. 14 Dec 1868/9 in Galsdon, Tilsit, Germany, d. 6 Aug 1911 in Litchfield, Montgomery Co., IL, m. 1891 or earlier to Wilhelm Heinrich Schultze in Germany. Auguste & Henry (as they were called) arrived in the USA at the port of Baltimore on the steamship Karlsruhe, 21 July 1892, and apparently proceeded directly to Mt. Olive, Macoupin Co., IL. Traveling with them were Sophia Schultz, age 6, Maria Schultz, age 4 (my grandmother) and Fredrik Schultz, age 1/2. Sophia was a surprise to me, as I have never heard of her, but Maria always told me that Schultze was not her birth father. At this time, I suspect that Sophia was his daughter, Maria her daughter and Fredrik their son. Way back then, they had his, hers and ours. Grin. Anyhow, the summer crossing must have proved too much for the baby, as the Church records show that on 1 Aug 1892 Friederich Wilhelm Bernhardt Schultze, son of Friedrich Schultze and Auguste Juliana, nee Barkowsky died at 5 mos, 22 days of age. On the 2 May 1893, William Henry Schultze was born to them. Shortly after, on 26 July 1893 Henry Schultze was killed in Consolidated Coal Mine # 8. The newspaper headlines say "MASHED INTO A PULP, Henry Schultze, a Loader at No. 8 Shaft, Killed Tuesday Afternoon by Falling Rock". The church records show that he was buried the next day, Wilhelm Heinrich Schultze, left a widow and 3 children, was 34 years and 12 days of age. The 3 children always bothered me, and I sort of assumed that maybe somebody forgot that the baby had died the year before (but is shown on the same page in the church death register), but with the knowledge of Sophia, it does, now, make sense. On the 22 of January 1895, Auguste Juliana Schultze, nee Barkowsky, m. John Ernest Carl Christopher Hillmann in Mt. Olive, Macoupin Co., MN. Four children were born to them, and in 1911 Auguste was granted a divorce from John. Auguste died six weeks later. I have found no further mention of Sophia Schultze, she is not shown on the 1900 Census with this family. Just a guess, but I wonder if maybe when Auguste and John got married, she kept her kids, but maybe farmed out Sophia or maybe she went to some of her fathers relatives, unknown to me. Anybody got a spare Sophia?? They always say that often friends and/or family from the same area in the old country came over and settled close by to those friends/family so your mention of Lithuania rang bells. Our two families maybe from the same area, both coal miners in Macoupin Co. Probably a long shot, but one never knows. Would love to hear from anybody who may have a connection or knowledge of this family. None stayed in Macoupin Co., except maybe the missing Sophia. Sophia Schultze went ? Maria Schultze left and in 1908 was married in Bowman, ND William H. Schultze, had a court appointed guardian after the death of his mother, served in the Army in WWI, and lived his life in CA. Meta Hillmann, b. 1895, left after the death of her mother, married a Unk Williams, lived in Alaska for a bit, then CA & OR. Theresa Hillmann b. 1897 had a guardian, as above, left and lived for a bit with Maria in Bowman and Fargo, ND Walter Hillmann b. 1900, had a guardian, as above, left and lived in the Chicago area. John Hillmann b. 1901, had a guardian, as above, left and spent some time with Maria in ND, then settled in Michigan. The other day they found Sam's wedding ring; more genealogy papers; just the things you don't always think about. I have already "loaned" them a sofa/bed for when they get situated again. Will come in handy when the kids are home. Others locally have stored dishes & pots & pans for them until they have a place to use them. As I think of things, I try to let others know. She truly appreciated the stamps and after that I thought, geeze, why didn't I take her some envelopes to go with the paper I gave her. So, I'll dig out some envelopes which I buy in assorted sizes in quantities of 500. Our daughter who works at Goodwill in Edwardsville, got them a $40 voucher to use on anything in the store when they're ready. My kids grew up with Sam & Mary & family & they were pretty shook up by the fire. Made them take a look at what they have. She hadn't gotten her Staunton 2000 calendar yet - I think someone asked about that. She had just gotten her Poppy Pony I ordered from the VFW catalog - I have an extra one here I'll give her to replace that one. Don't know about last year's Poppy Puppy but maybe one can be ordered again. We have a group here who love Beanie Babies & are truly fascinated with the lesser known ones like the VFW Poppy beanies. I just thought I'd touch base with you & let you know how things are going. One of these days Mary may stop by & write a message to you all. Happy Holidays to all in case I don't remember to tell you later. Cindy

    3. On November 13 a small group of us HUNT researchers gathered in Macoupin County to meet each other and share information. We were there from Friday evening thru Sunday evening and had the most wonderful time. We came home with so much information, copies of pictures, and a great amount of love from our "email distant cousins". Macoupin County is lovely, friendly, and filled with information. They take care of their cemeteries, their records, and researchers. LOVE TO EVERYONE IN MACOUPIN COUNTY. I would like to recommend to all of you who are emailing "distant cousins", plan a get together. It is the most fulfilling experience. And just think, you don't have to hold them down to talk "Genealogy". They do it willingly. Our meeting was announced on the Macoupin County Web Sight and I want to thank Gloria Frazier for that. This is a wonderful Web Sight and I am here nearly every day. ANYONE OUT THERE SEARCHING HUNT, LAMBERT, LOYD and attached names give me a holler. We have tons of info to share and you have a lot of swell cousins out her. Thanks and Hugs, Judy C.

    3. To the List, I haven't received anything from ILMACOUP-L either. Everyone is probably out shopping or surfing the web. Macoupin County has one of the best websites I've seen...and the most friendly and helpful people helping research our families. Being a native-born Californian doing research from afar, Macoupin County has been one of the easiest counties to search because everyone shares and is so helpful. I have been working on my Macoupin County families almost 30 years and I have found everyone connected to Macoupin County in some way to be the friendliest of all my genealogical contacts. It must be something in the water. Linda Arnold in California Researching: LAIR, CRAYS, TOSH and Allied Families of Macoupin Co., IL

McCollom Edwards family; and a document assigning guardianship of McCollom children to Daniel Edwards. This family came to the Scottville area about 1850. Their son Noah Edwards married Avia Arnold, dau. of John Record Arnold and Polly Ruyle Arnold. I know there are lots of you related to the Arnold's on the list, so I wanted to let you know that I have photos of some of the Arnold's and Edwards' that I am happy to share. I have photos of Polly Ruyle Arnold; her son James Washington Arnold and his 2nd wife, Edie; Daniel and Elizabeth Edwards; their son Noah and Avia Arnold Edwards and their children. I can send copies of these pictures by email, or make copies and mail them for about $2 each to anyone interested. Happy Holidays! Juli Claussen
