The Macoupin County History book published by the Historical Society in 1979 reads: "Beavers built a dam across the stream flowing westward towards the Macoupin Crrek and created a small shallow lake. In the early 1890's, eighteen influential men from Carlinville leased the grounds from the owner, Henry Brayford, and formed the Beaver Dam Lake Club. They spent $2600 to build an earthen dam on each end of the lake, raising the water level to form a larger lake. Henry Brayford owned 711 acres and was a coal miner by trade. In 1899, he began the task of digging a shaft and, at a depth of 144 feet, found a vein of coal six feet deep. Before he could open the mine, he died in December 1900. One of his daughters was Mrs. Sarah Rhoads, wife of Frank Rhoads. In 1901, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Rhoads took over the property and operated a small 16 room hotel and resort. The hotel was a two-story building. Fishing was $1 per day, and lodging was advertised at $2 per night when the lodge opened in 1901. Outdoor camping was allowed, but Mrs. Rhoads would not allow women campers. Guests arriving by train were met by a large horse-drawn coach at Maocupin Station and taken to the hotel. With the advent of the automobile, the transit business disappeared and the hotel was later closed. In 1947, the property consisting of 425 acres north of the hard road was sold to the State of Illinois and made into a State Park. The top floor of the hotel was removed, and the building was converted into a ranger's residence. The State rebuilt, raising the dams at each end of the lake, and developed a lake of 59 acres. In 1955, add'tl land purchased to the west of the park increased the total park acreage to 737 acres." Jim Frank has prepared an eight page history of Beaver Dam State Park and is going to provide me with a copy, which I will mail to Gloria Shipp Frazier for incorporation on the home page, if she so desires. Jim is presenting a program to the Home Extension tomorrow at Carlinville, and is assisting the Division of Natural Resources in an article which will be published in Outdoor Illinois in April. Jim states he has a listing of the Greenwalts that were buried at Beaver Dam Park that were inadvertently left out of the Tombstone Revelations Book published by the Historical Society.
In case you haven't got some help, yet..... I know there are more knowledgeable people than me on the locations here. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/m_towns.htm Wilsonville being small, I would say the obit would be in Bunker Hill, Mt Olive or Gillespie newspaper. The local libraries for these towns may have the newspapers on microfilm. Can write or call the libraries - in case - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/m_lbrary.htm Write or call. Local newpaper addresses are here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/m_paper.htm And, I know the IL His Library will have the newspapers on microfilm. They will research for you for $10 (out of stater) per obit or you can order the microfilm thru your local library on interlibrary loan: http://www.state.il.us/hpa/lib/default.htm (looks like this site is a little messed up. have to fish your way around but think this will work) I would call to find out the particulars. The Historical Library is located on the second floor of the Old State Capitol in downtown Springfield, between Fifth and Sixth and Washington and Adams Streets. Parking is available in the public garage beneath the Old State Capitol Plaza. The mailing address is Old State Capitol, Springfield, IL 62701-1507; telephone (217) 524-7216. The Library is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, except State holidays. Good luck. Gary, Thomas Amos GREENWALT is buried in Brayford Cemetery on the park property; I've been there many, many, times since my youth. The grave is in the back, on the left. There is / was a small fenced area around the family site. When are about to enter Beaver Dam, turn left instead the fence to the graveyard is about 1/4 mile down on the right. I'll answer more to you later; I just returned from a Super Bowl Party. We have this: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/m_beaver.htm but probably even in the wrong township, altho should be, at least, linked to Carlinville. There is a snail mail address for Beaver Dam on that page where the person might be able to lead you to a source or might send you some info. If you find out more, I would like to add the info to the page listed above. Thanks and good luck. Hi all, I am trying to find out who had a first name of Alvaron or Alveron. I have a brother and sister, Ira C. Bridges and Susan Bridges married to Joseph Ward Hiatt who named one of their kids this name. One child was born in 1853 and the other born in 1857. Has anyone heard of this name and does it belong to a Bridges? thanks julie
Hi Folks, I have not written to the list for quite awhile, but I am struggling with a mystery I am hoping someone might be able to help me with. I am looking for any information that might exist about Emma Holobarich Morowitz DWORSACK. Emma was born on 12 July 1835 in Germany and died on 17 September 1917 in Mt. Olive. She died at the home of her grandson Ermst VIEHWEG. Ernst was the son of Anna MORAWITZ (Anna's daughter) and Ernst Emil VIEHWEG (the son of Gustav K. VIEHWEG and Caroline) who were married 23 May 1886 in Macoupin County. Anna was born 22 August 1867 in Funfkirchen Niederungard, Germany and died 4 Jun 1908 in Mt. Olive. The big question is who were Emma's husband(s). 1900 Macoupin County census (Vol 120 E.D. 64 Sheet 10 Line 59) lists her as Emma DWORSACK who was the mother of 11 children of whom only 1 (Anna) was still alive. She could not speak English and immigrated to the US in 1886 (the same year her daughter married Ernst VIEHWEG). Information from Viehweg family members seem to indicate that her first husband was Franz MORAWITZ and her maiden name was HOLOBARICH. However, her death certificate has no information about her husband(s) but lists her father as "E. MOROWITZ". This makes little sense since her daughter's maiden name was MOROWITZ. But this certainly adds to the confusion. As a DWORSACK researcher I am most interested in how she became a DWORSACK and if she is related to the DWORSACK family of Mt. Olive -- since this is the only DWORSACK (this spelling) family I have found in the US it seems highly likely. I wonder if it could have been Wenzel DWORSACK who is the progenitor of this particular family. Becker & Son Funeral Home provided her funeral so I am writing them for any records, but I thought I would also try on the listserv. Any help would be appreciated. Since I have not written in awhile, I thought I would also list the surnames I am working on in Macoupin County and surrounding areas: TITSWORTH, MAY, GUNN, DWORSACK, SCHELLER, GUENTHER, BAUER and other associated surnames including KEISER, LANG, ROEHL, EISSMANN, RINK, REUTER, etc. Thanks again Matt Weismantel
