    1. Wimmer Cemetery Clean up and Mowing Day Saturday August 19
    2. The Wimmer Cemetery will have a mowing and clean up day Saturday August 19 starting at 8:30, rain cancels. Much help is needed in mowing, cleaning and raking the cemetery. We have some equipment available for use that day, but encourage others to bring mowing and raking supplies if possible. We also encourage those who have ancestors buried at this historic cemetery to contact us at the address below to provide information on their family members. Any scout troop or other organization who needs credit for their community service badges are encouraged to contact us as we will continue to need help this year to maintain and research this historic cemetery. Wimmer Cemetery is located at the south end of Dixon Road. Starting at exit 82 of interstate 55 travel west four miles on Illinois Route 104 until you reach a north-south road named Dixon Road. There is a new sign at Dixon Road, which says “Wimmer Historical Cemetery.” Turn south [left] on Dixon Road, the cemetery is five tenths of a mile from this point. There is a stone at the entrance of the cemetery which reads “Wimmer Cemetery Est. 1824.” If you are traveling from the north or the south on Illinois Route 4, go to the junction of Route 4 and Route 104. Head east on Route 104 for 1.8 miles where you will see the sign which reads “Wimmer Historical Cemetery.” Turn south [right] on Dixon Road for five tenths of a mile and you will have reached the cemetery. One more of the historically interesting "residents" of is Herman Ahlers. Herman is the one person buried in the cemetery to whom no one is related. We believe that he was a traveling salesman. His probate record indicates that he was originally from Germany and had traveled from Mason County, Illinois to Auburn in the winter of 1873-1874. He had traveled previously from Germany to New York to Illinois to California to Australia to Germany and back and forth on this route. His brother was the only close relative that could be found upon his death. The brother lived in Mason City a very long distance from Auburn even during the current time period to have traveled in any fashion other than by train. It is thought that Herman may have come in contact with a form of the measles during his last trip and is noted on his tombstone that he died in Sangamon County, Illinois at Philip Wineman's. Philip was a prominent merchant in Auburn at the time and probably had him stay as a guest of the household. The only date we have for Herman was his date of death, 08 February 1874. If anyone knows further details of Herman, please contact us at the address below. Please help us to continue preserving this hallowed ground for future generations with your assistance in maintaining the beauty and history it provides the community in our generation. Monetary donations are always welcome. If there are any further questions about the location of the cemetery or how one can help out financially, please feel free to contact us at: Wimmer Cemetery Association, Inc. 1. Cody Hatlen Memorial
    2. A Cody Hatlen Memorial has been started at the Carlinville Library. In the 15 years Cody was here with us, he set the bar high on what it means to be a volunteer. The Carlinville Library Board met and discussed how best to honor and memorialize Cody Hatlen, who volunteered so many hours in the Library's Genealogy Room. They decided to set up a scholarship in Cody's name for an outstanding volunteer each year, someone beyond merely volunteering a few hours here and there, in short, someone like Cody. The library has already received some money, including a sizable one from a woman in Connecticut helped by Cody, and the Library has made its donation also. Checks should be made payable to the Carlinville Public Library, with a notation on the "memo" (or subject) line to indicate Cody Hatlen Mem. or Hatlen Mem. Please mail it to: Carlinville Public Library, Attention Elizabeth Kaburick, 510 N. Broad Street, Carlinville, IL 62626. Any donation would be acknowledged. If you want a name other than your own, as signed, to be included in an acknowledgement, please include a note to that effect. Any amount will be appreciated - a few dollars and up. The following article tells of Cody's family and his love of Genealogy: _http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17020038&BRD=1719&PAG=461&dept_id=25271&rfi=6_ (http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17020038&BRD=1719&PAG=461&dept_id=25271&rfi=6)

    3. I also have Macoupin County ancestors who moved to Missouri. Harrison Hodges and at least one of his brothers moved to Cass and Butler Counties after the civil war. I know Harrison received a homestead on land that was confiscated from rebel sympathizers. He later moved to Cooke County, TX. --- Diane Walsh <[email protected]> wrote: > List, > Thank you all for your examples--and such variety! > I'm surprised at the > mid-Missouri counties. WIlliam Scroggins and Olly Best, both probably living in Omph Ghent but from families associated with Dorchester and Staunton, were married at Portage des Sioux, St. Charles County, Missouri, 26 Nov 1849. Olly, who died in January 1852, is buried in Staunton, William is at Tine Sawyer.

    1. RE: [ILMacoupin] City of Gillespie
    2. James Hendry
    3. Hi Wayne, Greetings out of the blue yonder from "Bonnie Scotland", I like your snaps of Gillespie, I noticed most Street's are named after Tree's, sounds like my kind of town. Having never been to the America's it's interesting to see places my kin have managed to get to, I'm talking about my Granny Maggie Hendry nee Gallagher's two brother's, Owen J Gallagher 1883-1949 and James A Gallagher 1886-1953, (Burial records from Holly Cross Cemetery courtesy of Jarid Ott) these two emigrated to the USA in 1909 and 1920 respectively. Ownie, his wife Delia 1888-1930, and Son James, born Gillespie 1915-1977, he was Baptised in S.S.Simon & Jude, I think there was a further son called Leonard, 1917-1936. Ownie lived in Chestnut Street according to the 1920 Census, he was Coalminer at the Superior Coal Co in Gillespie, and on the 1930 Census, they were living at 307 West Walnut Street, Ownie's brother James A, is living there with them. I had a great deal of help from Gloria Frazier concerning their Naturalisation Paper's, and another lady from N.J with the census returns, but I'm still trying to find out if there are any descendants of these two still living in Gillespie, I'd like to ask you if maybe you could add this email to your site, it may jog someone's memory, and hopefully find me a relative, I append my email address as follows: [email protected] Slainte! 3. My Great Grandfather Wehling went from Staunton to St. Louis in 1854 and was married by Pastor Picker (?) of the Luth. church. My Great Grandmother was 14 at the time. It was reported that people would come from as far away as 75 miles to be married there. Although how many churches were in the area of Macoupin in 1854?
