    3. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery is in Hettick, S. Palmyra Twp. My grandparents, Jonathan & Irettie Stewart and other kin are buried there. A very long time ago I came across something about a Gilead "settlement", but I can't pinpoint where, so I might be remembering wrong. I suppose that could mean that members of the Church lived in the same surrounding area? If there was it might have been just a little NW of Hettick, maybe in Barr Twp. but its not listed. My grandparents lived in Barr Twp. just NW of Hettick when raising their family and belonged to this Church. The village of Hettick is split between S. Palmyra Twp. and Barr Twp. In the 1837 IL Gazeteer it lists only a Gilead in Calhoun Co. I do think that "Gilead" is a common name for a Baptist Church, but I could stand to be corrected. 3. I searched on the Wayne County site and didn't find a Gilead. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilwayne/ Macoupin had a Gilead Baptist Church: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmacoup/cemetery/gileadbaptistchurch/index.htm Rick Doty, Rudy Morris and Jere Braden may have more to say on this since they have relatives in the cem. I don't see an old community of Gilead in Macoupin. North Otter from South Otter? Virden from Girard? When was Nilwood Township first named? I looked in one of the Macoupin County history books and couldn't find suitable answers to these questions. I would think that since the townships were/are political entities within the county that they had to be created by the county government at some time or another. Dwayne Wrightsman

    1. [ILMACOUP] Ostfriesen Schmidt Families by Gillespie
    2. Darren King
    3. Hi, Has anyone on the list researched (or is researching) the five children of Garrelt Monnen Schmidt that came to the Gillespie area from Poghausen, Ostfriesland in the 1850s? The children were: Jann Garrelts Monnen Schmidt born 22 Oct 1828, married Meta abt 1860, immigrated 1859 Weye Garrelts Monnen Schmidt born 7 Feb 1831, married Antje Börcherts Schoon 5 Mar 1855 in MacCo., immigrated early 1850s Weert Garrelts Monnen Schmidt born 10 Mar 1832, married Trientje Janssen Milfs 19 Nov 1858 in Ostfriesland, immigrated 1859 Alske Garrelts Monnen Schmidt born 8 Feb 1838, married Jordan Eilers 3 Nov 1860 in MacCo. Ude Focken Garrelts Schmidt born 23 Jun 1844, married Memke Ibelings Free in Ostfriesland, immigrated 1867 They appear as Smith in most of the 1860 thru 1880 census, but appear as Schmidt in the 1900 census and elsewhere. Many are buried at Gillespie Cemetery, Ude moved to Nebraska before 1900. There's some data for Weert and Ude posted on Rootsweb, but John, Weye and Weert all named their children very similarly and it doesn't help that the similarly-named children were born very close together! Trientje Janssen Milfs is related back in Ostfriesland to my Adden line, and a sister of Antje Schoon married an Adden in Madison County. Trientje's parents and siblings also came to Macoupin County (sisters married Jann Broers, Tamme Janssen, Menne Johnson & Thomas DeWerff). I'm trying to document the families after they arrived in America and can provide quite a bit of info on their lines back in Ostfriesland, so if anyone here has more on these folks I'd really like to hear from you. Thanks! Darren

There were 108 pages and 86 of those pages were typed by Darren, Carl and Vivian. Thank you, thank you. Carl is the father of Elizabeth Wood who passed away in 2005. Elizabeth was a volunteer typist for Macoupin County data. Carl's friend Vivian jumped in and typed in honor of Elizabeth. Whatta lady! Thank you, Vivian. Vivian was not researching in Macoupin County. Remember, the directory is of farmers' families, not all families in the county. With the children listed and maiden names listed, the directory is a very good resource of genealogy. Gloria ------------------ Gloria M. 2. Thank you for the family information. I'm sorry I am late in getting back but I had to work at the hospital over the weekend. When I get off work I am generally "brain dead." I have many of my families names and dates but I was just wondering if there were any of these family's descendants still living in the area? My father was an only child and he grew up away from this branch of his family. I was hoping there were family members still living in the area that knew some of the oral family history. I know the names and dates of birth and deaths but I really would like to hear stories about my ancestors. Thank You, Regina LeMarr Mooney

    2. Hi Regina, This is not my family, but I did spend some time looking for information for you. Both the Lemarr [Lemar, Lamar, Lamarr] family and the Harr family seem to have very rich histories. The Lemarr family traces back to what is believed to be a very well off, French family. One source suggests that the Lemarr family may have been promised land in the USA, if they would come to this country. Your Clinton E. Lemarr, b. 28 Aug 1892, d. Oct 1974, is shown on his Draft Card as being Tall, medium build, blue eyes and light hair color. He was one of 5 children born to Francis W. Lemarr and his wife, Lydia E. [Harr] Lemarr. Francis Marion Lemarr, b. abt 1829 in TN, to Isaac N[ewton] Lemarr and his wife, Sarah E., b. abt 1836 in IL. Francis had at least 5 sibs, Martha, Isaac N., Elsie L., Rachel M., and Emily A. This family seems to trace fairly easily back to the 1650's. Lydia E. Harr, b. June 1861 in TN to Adam Leonadas Harr and his wife, Melvina Horn, one of at least 11 children born to them. This family seems to trace back to European Royalty [Hapsburgs, Polish Kings, Luthania Princesses, etc. etc.]. I easily followed this family back to 970 AD [not the Harr name, but allied families].
