    1. [ILMACOUP] JOHN CASPER ROSS
    2. Hi! I am looking, hoping... for an old pic of John Casper Ross. He enlisted in the Illinois 32, Company C in the Civil war in Oct 1861 from Macoupin county. He was discharged a year later in Oct 1862. He remained in Macoupin a short while and married a Anna M. Davis in 1862 as well. Please contact me if anyone has in their possesion such a picture of himself, or in his unit or even of his first wife Anna M. Davis. He was badly beaten up after the war and rarely appeared in public not even with his brothers for any "photo-ops" Would be indebted, Mark Ross ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. If you have a relative who has never been to Macoupin but has ties here, or if you are homesick for Macoupin, perhaps this CD/DVD of aproximately 479 photos of places in Macoupin County from the Macoupin County Genealogical Society would be a different Christmas/Holiday gift. Copies are $15.00 plus $3.00 p/h. Make your check to Macoupin County Genealogical Society and send it to: P.O. Box 95, Staunton, IL 62088-0095. 1. [ILMACOUP] Correction on Looking for Henry Toenges
    2. Phil Shappard
    3. Thank you to the two folks who responded to my request yesterday. Unfortunately, I gave the wrong city of residence for Henry Toenges. I meant to say in 1887 he is listed as the next of kin in a state document living in Brighton, IL. Hopefully, this will make a difference. Hopefully this is the Heinrich August Tönjes born 27 Jul 1829 in Kölkebech, Germany I have been looking for these past several years. He and his brother Peter Heinrich left for America in the 1850s leaving a widowed mother back in the Fatherland. I found Peter “Henry” Toenges as a single man, never married at the Quincy Soldiers Home. His application shows “Henry Toenges” of Brighton, IL as the nearest relative. The current Tönjes on the ancestoral farm, Heinz Tönjes is looking for the descendants of these brothers so he can have them return “home”. He has a 1859 receipt show money paid to a shipping company to provide for the two boys living in St. Charles, MO. I have found Civil War records, but the Henry born in 1929 has been a bit elusive and provides the only prospect for living descendants. If you have any suggestions or leads for me to follow, I would appreciate hearing from you. You may have seen a good write up on this in the St. Louis Post earlier this year. I had over 75 responses but no connections yet. Thank you! Phil Shappard Winfield, IL

    1. Re: [ILMACOUP] New Tombstone Revelations Book
    2. Thank you, Dee I will be sending my check off to you for the New Tombstone Revelations Book. I look forward to purchasing the future updates when they become available, too. I have copies of all the Tombstone Revelations Books. The Tombstone Revelations books are a wonderful source for anyone researching Macoupin County families. I would suggest that everyone ought to read the description of the various cemeteries for additional information they may contain. I had my copy of the original T.R. book several years before I realized that Joseph Dickson had in fact, crossed the Atlantic. His death is mentioned only in the description of Killam Cemetery in South Palmyra twp. but not within the body of the book. It reads, "Oldest grave found was listed on the deed records made by the WPA in 1938. It was that of Joseph Dickson in 1842. This was listed again in 1979 by Velma Sonneborn and Thelma Dean (Zelmer) Stewart but we were unable to find the stone of Joseph." Within the body of the book, the only DICKSON listed is that of Margaret Dickson d. 10-17-1845 age 51yr 11mo (Killam Cemetery). Margaret was his wife. They are the parents of my Ellen Dickson who married James Miller Lair. A tradition in our family (my grandmother, a LAIR) said her grandmother was from Scotland; that her mother came to America but her father had died. We always assumed he died in Scotland. They are listed in Scotland, 1841 census in Kirkcudbrightshire. According to my grandmother, when Ellen and James M. Lair were married (1844), she had only been in America about 18 months according to the oral history told to her. Margaret was first married to a Mr. William Welsh and had a son, William Welsh who came to Macoupin County and later went to Schuyler County, Missouri. The younger William Welsh was the half-brother of Ellen Dickson. Linda R.F. Arnold Menifee, California

    3. Hi Linda, Certainly the new book is available to those of you who do not live in the area. Mailing would be an additional $3 or $33 for the book. I checked the names you are researching and found Crays in Virden, Lair's in Pleasant Hill, and many Lair's and Tosh's in Girard. The new book doesn't include North Otter, however did find many Crays and Lair in the N.O. Cherry Cemetery. We are updating the original book by sections. The next section will be North & South Palmyra; and the third book will be North & South Otter, Scottville & Barr. Hope this doesn't confuse you too much. If you are interested in the new Virden, Pleasant Hill, Girard and Sulphur Springs book, you may send your check to me (Dee Snell, 15257 Gibbel Dr., Girard, IL 62640) or to the MCHS, P.O. Box 432, Carlinville, IL 62626. 3. Maybe we have talked before on here. I have Hopson Arnold and Avie Nix in my data base. Thomas and Avey married in Oglethorpe Co, GA and buried in Land Cem, Macoupin Co, IL. I have them as 2nd cousins as well as husband and wife. Avey's mother was an Arnold married to Edward Nix but I don't have a first name for the mother. Avie's mother seems to be a daughter of Thomas Arnold, Sr. and Mary Jennings. Thomas, Sr. and Mary's son, Thomas Arnold, Jr. was I think my ggg-grandfather. I have Hopson Arnold as a son of William Arnold who was a son of John Arnold and Sarah Brown. John Arnold was a son of William Arnold and Elizabeth Bostick who were also the parents of Thomas Arnold, Sr. This is what I have. Do you have any additions or corrections?
