    3. Aloha, Mary Ann Kaylor...thanks for posting this reply to the list! Bob Awe and I are 3rd cousins (KORTUM/CORDUM) and I live in Hawaii. Wonder if there was a mix up on Mary Anns? I'm not connected to the famous football game, just tried to Google the source of the information for proof. Happy to hear that Bob's father might have been involved because I am a huge football fan...high school/college and NFL! 1. Re: [ILMACOUP] MO Death Index 1910-1955

    3. While working on a special project, I have come across between 20 and 30 listings in the MO Death Index 1910-1955 which were indexed as Dunklin Co MO deaths but the certicates showed the death in another county (mostly at the state hospital in Fulton, Callaway, MO). Knowing that these misindexed certificates may prevent someone from finding a relative, I sent a list which consisted of the person's name as shown in the index, the death county and the certificate number to the Archives Reference email address given on the opening page of the index. I received a reply saying that the index will be corrected, however, the reply also noted that the Archives used a paper index which was produced by the MO Bureau of Vital Statistics. So please don't blame the Archives as they trusted the BVS. In closing, don't disregard a death certificate which shows the death in another county - look at it. If you find that it's been misindexed, please forward the information to the Archives Reference area and help others as you would want them to do in return. 2. Hi Mary Ann, Just back from spending two wonderful weeks in Hawaii, and saw this e-mail. A couple of other tidbits: I believe my father played on that team (he would have been 17 that year and I know he played football at Staunton High). Staunton had a powerhouse that year and unfortunately for Gillespie, this was their first year to field a team - with predictable results! Bob Awe [email protected]

    2. Larry Clark
    3. I have always heard the score was Staunton 223, Gillespie 0. It was supposed to be a JV game and Gillespie showed up with their freshmen/sophmores and Staunton had their varsity team and refused to play the JV squad against Gillespie. In addition, Staunton had a very good team that year and the result was predictable. I don't know how true it was but I always heard that these coal miniing towns in Macoupin were a little loose with their eligibility for players in those days. Some of the players would work in the mines and then show up to play in the football game later. I'm not saying this was true, just what I used to hear when I lived in Gillespie. It would be interesting to find out if this was really the case. On 12/27/06, Chuck & Cindy Leonard <[email protected]> wrote: > > The score was Staunton 233; Gillespie 0. 3. Just did a quick search on "The Google" and found this on url: http://www.ihsa.org/initiatives/hstoric/football_new.htm<http://www.ihsa.org/initiatives/hstoric/football_new.htm> As the decade of the 1920s unfolded, the sport of high school football continued to grow in popularity as many Illinois schools began their programs during that period. One state record which will probably never be broken was set during this time, in 1923, when Staunton piled up a 233-0 win over Gillespie, as George Oehler scored ten touchdowns. The lopsided win by the Bulldogs capped off their 10-0-0 season, during which they out-scored their opposition 494 points to 23. Don't know how official this is, but... 3. Even though there may be individuals living that can remember events from 1923, I doubt if anyone wants to acknowledge a known fact that many will find somewhat shocking in the football history of Macoupin Co IL. There is a website "Your Hometown" which has interesting facts about towns in every state. The website's address - (http://www.yourhometown.org/). While looking at the Illinois page, I happen to come across an entry for Staunton. Don't know why this entry wasn't under Gillespie too, but here it is - "Gillespie High beat Staunton High, 233-0 in Football in 1923." 3. I missed something. I didn't see any digest msgs. I did see Mary Ann trying to give a correct url for a site and I know what she means when she has to keep correcting when you try it yourself and the one you think should work just doesn't work.
