    2. You are right. It was Chap's. I always went with my cousin Gloria Schenck. I remember the guy who owned the place had been injured on the ferris wheel I believe. 3. I, too, sure remember Chap's. Don't believe I ever skated there, but we did go to the amusement park part of it. I liked riding the carousel. Does anyone remember when the Steak & Shake opened in Decatur (wasn't it not far from the lake?) Seems like I remember them having "car service" and we were one of the first customers (which would probably have been about 1950ish.) 3. The Steak n Shake was there by the lake in the 40's because I went there often and I moved from Decatur to Arizona in 1947. All this reminiscing makes me want to go back for a visit. I can almost taste the hamburgers and orange freezes. 3. Do you mean like a drive in like that root beer stand on Eldorado whose name I can't recall, where the carhops come out and take your order? I know my cousin used to go there when she was in high school but I know she sat inside. I confess I wasn't old enough to be going to Steak & Shake in 1950. 3. Yes, a drive in ... couldn't recall what they called it <memory the first go go they say> I think the drive in stayed open even in the winter time (but I may be wrong there.) I also remember King's Restaurant which was more downtown. Wasn't it very close to the "new" Steak & Shake (of the 1950's?) We use to go there a lot after Church on Sundays. 3. There was another roller rink on the east edge of downtown, at least in the first half of the 40's. Having birthday parties at that rink was very popular---easy on parents. Refreshments were pop and those marvelous squishy bread donuts. I have a book, "Decatur, Illinois Snapshots", published by the Herald & Review" in 2000. Has pictures up to 1950. That really brings back memories! This discussion of schools reminded me of that book, and I found a May 1949 picture of Grant School students lined up to wash their hands in the furnace room because there is no plumbing in the school. (There is a soap dispenser on the wall, and a wash basin and a bucket on. A few other pictures: 1931 picture of a student learning sign language at E. A. Gastman School. 1911 picture of what is probably the whole student body lined up outside the former Jones School that was still standing in 2000 at 2495 N. Water. An undated picture: Students exercising at Sangamon School at Sangamon and Clinton streets. November 1931: Manual training class at Centennial Junior High School---woodworking. 1888: The first public school built on Church Street in 1857. It was called "Big Brick" Another undated: Classes at Decatur High School include blacksmithing. Included are a couple of pictures of the "New" Lakeview High. 3. There was a school across the street from where my grandparents lived (1200 block of East Orchard, Decatur.) They bought this house in 1942 <memory here.> Any ideas what the name of this school was? I believe it was closed by 1950. I, too, well remember when Lakeview High was first built! I also remember when the "new" Oak Grove School was built and remember going to Kindergarten in the original, old Oak Grove School (on the Grand Ave. "curve.") Now, that's REALLY getting old! <g> Anyone remember Decatur High's basketball Coach Kentner? 3. The School on the 1200 East Orchard was called St. Johanna Lutheran School. 3. I think during the war everyone went to Chaps. They still had it in 1960 but not too long after that. I don't know when it started but I know it was a teen and young adult hangout during the war. Of course, families went also. At my mother's funeral an old friend of hers was telling me how he and his wife used to carry me around the rink as they skated. I was the only baby at the time, a novelty that didn't last too long. <g> Cheryl Rothwell logancty@mindspring.com Logan County, IL, Coordinator, ILGenWeb www.rootsweb.com/~illogan Central IL Regional Coordinator, ILGenWeb Clark, Downing, Harding, Lucas et al
