    3. There has been a couple of changes in this list. First, the commercial taglines at the bottom of the messages have been replaced with basic ones relating to the list [how to unsubscribe] and the Macon County ILGenWeb site. Second, replies to messages on the list will now automatically go to the list. The lists are about sharing information. It is very frustrating when a person sees a question of interest but does not see the reply. Further, all messages are archived and a future researcher gets the same frustration. Now the reply will go directly to the list unless you make it otherwise. Don't reply with something you don't want public unless you have carefully made sure it is not going to the list. Speaking of public, protect your privacy and that of others by never posting anyone's snail mail address or phone number. While only subscribers may post anyone can read the archives. Do you want to search the list archives? Go to: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Threaded archives are at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ Archives by year are at: http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=ROOTS You can search ANY of the Rootsweb lists using the above addresses including all of the surname and location lists. 1. [ILMACON] Williams Macon County 1840
    2. I am looking for information on Joseph Williams, who may have been in Macon County or Woodford County in 1840. He married Susan ? (possibly her maiden name was also Williams) but their marriage date is unknown. They are found, however, in Ohio in 1850, with children Mary, Emeline and Charles. Jospeh and Susan returned to Macon County. Susan is buried in Salem Cemetary, but I have not been able to locate Joseph's burial place. He is found living with his oldest daughter Mary Miller in Macon County in 1880. Any help is appreciated! Rosie

    3. Dear Doris, I have found some Bartlett information in Macon County Cemetery Inscriptions Volume III, for the Long Grove Cemetery. It is sparse and I not know if it is the people you are searching. I will quote the information at the end of the Long Grove Cemetery listing. "The 1891 Plat Book of Decatur and Macon Conty shows the Long Grove Cemetery on land owned by W. T. Atterbery (160 Acres). The following are the names taken from the plat of the Long Grove Cemetery as recorded in the office of the County Recorder in Decatur, IL. (See page 44 for location of the following. The plat was recor4ded November 23, 1942." Number 21. is a J. A. Bartlett. (No dates, but perhaps that would be available in the Recorder's Office) You mentioned not knowing much about George Bartlett and I found the following information on pg 48, which might shed some light on his life. Bartlett, Henrietie, wife of G. A. d. Dec. 9 1882. aged 38 yrs. 3 m. 17 da. Bartlett, Rachel dau. of G.A. and I., d. apr. 19, 1874, aged 3 yrs. 9 mo. 27 days. Bartlett, Isabella wife of G. A. d. 1. [ILMACON] cemetery lookup for Jennie BARTLETT 1884-1891
    2. I would be very grateful if some kind soul could find for me a cemetery listing for Jennie BASTION SEASS BARTLETT, who I believe died near Macon between Feb 1884 and June 1891. No one has been able to find a death record for her for me, and a number of people have tried. What I know is that she was b. April 15, 1854, in Dubuque, married the first time to Aaron Seass in Sullivan, Moultrie Co. Nov 19, 1873 in Sullivan. They had a son, Herbert Howard Seass, in 1874. Aaron Seass much have died before 1880, because in the 1880 census, Jennie and Herbert are shown living with her parents, N.S. and Eunice Bastion, in Sullivan. Herbert died in Decatur in 1941 and I have his death certificate. Jennie married George BARTLETT December 13, 1883. I know nothing of him at all except for this marriage date. The only reason I have for suspecting Jennie died between these dates comes from her Father's family Bible. All the deaths but two are recorded in her father's clergyman's handwriting. His death, Feb 4, 1884, is recorded in what I assume is her mother's writing--she was housebound her last years with what we would call rheumatoid arthritis. This would account for the cramped writing. The last recorded death is Jennie's, in the same handwriting. It gives her full name, and says she died "in the country near Macon, and was buried there." No date is given. Jennie's mother died in June, 1891, according to her obituary, of which I have an original newspaper clipping. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Doris Waggoner Seattle

    3. There are probably people on this list who own the Macon County cemetery books. I am not one of those people but the books I own for other counties are indexed so it is fairly easy for a kind soul to look up someone for you. The death certificates are truly random. There is one for my gggrandmother who died in 1896 but not her husband who died in 1914. 3. There was no enforced requirement for death certificates until 1916. Before that it is hit and miss, varies widely by county and time. So, Macon may have SOME death records going back but not all of them. Many counties -- and I don't know about Macon -- have a list. If you actually are in the Clerk's office you can look at the list of what they have in early records. And I assume that you have to have the exact date to get something from the county clerk. SKS found me one from 1941. But I am still trying to track down the death of his mother for whom I only have the peramters of between Feb 23, 1884 and June 15, 1891. The name is Jennie Bastion Seass Bartlett. She died "in the country" outside Macon. Her father died on the 1891 date and when her mother recorded her daughter's death in the family Bible after her husband's death in 1884, she forgot to put the death date. Jennie's death was the last record in the Bible, but I have her mother's obituary to pin down that death date. I don't know how many records there would be between 1884 and 1891. Would someone be willing to go look up Jennie for me? I don't really care about having a copy, just the information on it. I know nothing at all about her husband except the date of their marriage, so would be interested in anything of the information on the certificate. I know IRAD is getting sticky these days, and I have no living relatives in IL, so I don't even know if this is possible. Any help would be appreciated. 3. The Bureau of Land Management's web site has been very useful to me. Unfortunately, it is down again. The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2003 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com. - Court Again Pulls the Plug on BLM's Computers About a year and a half ago I wrote an article in this newsletter with the title, "Bureau of Land Management Computers Knocked Offline By Judge." In that article I described orders issued by U.S. District Judge Royce to Secretary of Interior Gale Norton. Judge Royce ordered Secretary Norton to "immediately" disconnect from the Internet every single computer, server, and system that has access to individual Indian trust data. The following day, many of the government's Web servers, including several containing genealogically valuable information, were disconnected from the Internet. You can read the article I wrote at: http://www.eogn.com/archives/news0152.htm. Three months later, the genealogy records were again made available online. See http://www.eogn.com/archives/news0212.htm. Apparently little has changed since 2001. In a new Memorandum Opinion and Preliminary Injunction issued this week by Judge Royce C. Lamberth of the U.S. District Court for Washington, D.C., the court stepped in again to pull the plug on the Bureau of Land Management's systems. According to the former CIO of the Bureau of Indian Affairs: "For all practical purposes, we have no security, we have no infrastructure... . Our entire network has no firewalls on it. I don't like running a network that can be breached by a high school kid." Details may be found in the court's document at http://www.dcd.uscourts.gov/96-1285as.pdf and in a recent issue of Government Computer News at http://www.gcn.com/vol1_no1/security/22935-1.html

    1. [ILMACON] Long Term Storage Media
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2003 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com. [new domain - go there to get your own FREE subscription] I am often asked about long-term storage of digital data. Many people are worried about the expected lifetime of CD-ROM disks and other storage media. Others like to point out that we may not have the required hardware to read such data, outside of a few systems housed in museums. I will suggest that the expected lifetimes of the storage media are unimportant. As the previous article about the Domesday Book shows, a little planning easily sidesteps these concerns. The original BBC Domesday project stored its output on storage media that is rare only seventeen years later. Yet the conversion to modern data storage technologies was accomplished with little fanfare. In almost all cases, storage of electronic data rarely needs to exceed twenty years. In fact, ten years is probably good enough for planning purposes; twenty years probably is an extreme case. One major advantage of electronic data is that it can be copied time and time again with absolutely no loss of quality from the original imprint. Unlike printed books and magazines, a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of the original documents still looks as good as the original. If the storage media change, who cares? I originally stored my genealogy data on 8-inch floppy disks that held about 90 kilobytes of data. Do you remember those? Very few home computer users have ever seen 8-inch floppies. My genealogy data at that time didn't fill a single 90 kilobyte disk. Five and a quarter inch floppies became the standard of choice about 1980. I copied my data to the new, smaller floppies that contained 360 kilobytes of data. By 1990 or so, the three and a half inch floppies became predominant. Each stored up to 1.4 megabytes of data. I copied my data to three and a half inch floppies. By late in the twentieth century, CD-ROM began to dominate, each able to store about 600 megabytes of data. Again, I copied my data to CD-ROM. A few months ago I purchased a DVD-ROM writer that stores up to 4.7 gigabytes of data on a single disk. I haven't copied my data over to DVD yet, but I now have the capability to move my data to this latest storage medium. Even after more than twenty years' of research, I can only fill a tiny fraction of the 4.7 gigabytes available on each DVD disk. As I stated earlier, the expected lifetimes of the storage media are unimportant. A little planning easily sidesteps those concerns. In my case and in the case of almost everyone I know, data gets copied from old storage media to new every few years. The important thing is the plan to keep copying data to new media every few years. Not only is the physical media important, but so is the electronic format. My data on the 8-inch floppies was stored in both ASCII text and in DB2 format, the predominant database standard of the time. Luckily, ASCII is still quite common; but when was the last time you saw a program that could read DB2 data? The same issue may hold true in future years. If you store your data today in the internal format of some genealogy program or as a GEDCOM file or as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file, will there be software available 50 or 100 years from now to read it? Probably not. Instead, each time you copy the data to new storage medium, you also need to make sure that you are converting it to current software standards. You need to be proactive. You need to make sure you copy your data and convert its format every few years. If you are an active genealogist with a computer available, this will be easy. However, you also need to plan for the same conversions after you lose interest or after your death. Make sure you give copies of your data to someone else who cares, preferably a family member with a similar interest to yours. You might also donate copies to a family society, to local genealogy societies, or to other organizations who will keep an eye on it for you. I do not know of any national or international society that collects such data with the intention of preserving it and converting the data to new formats every few years. Obviously, the LDS Church and a number of commercial companies would like you to donate your data to them so that they can add it to their databases and store it for many years. Doing so will preserve your data for generations. However, you probably want to also preserve data on a more local scale.
