Here's an example of an old plat map from Sangamon County -- it's for Illiopolis Township which is just west of Macon County. Click on the little button with arrows [generally the last thing to load so wait] to enlarge. In Section 18 right under the 18 [the road under the 18 is old US 36] there is a cross and that is a cemetery. In that very old cemetery there are buried some of the early settlers from the Niantic area. If you look around there is another cemetery down on the Sangamon River. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/maps/illinois/countymap/sangamon_atlas/ill iopolis.jpg You can quickly see several uses for plat maps. With a series of plat maps it is possible to trace land ownership. Of course, this assumes your ancestors were farmers. They didn't do the towns. If you go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~ildecgs/maconcip.htm you will find a large number of very useful publications related to Macon County. Unlike some places these are quite reasonably priced. You should support the local genealogical society wherever you are researching so they can continue to provide useful information. A plat map or a section map? There is the 1875 township and section map. If it is that map and you are having trouble you can also find it at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/maps/illinois/il1875/MACON.JPG and if you right click you can download a copy to your computer. The small cemetery in Oakley, Macon Co., Ill. is a family cemetery for the Baker family. So far as I know, it is still private, but I could be wrong. my aunt married a Baker, and she along with her husband, and three of her children, all of her sons, are also buried, I think the last son to be buried was Jan. 1, 2000. a few years ago, there was an article in the Decatur newspaper along with her picture, about her youngest son, who was killed in Viet Nam. There was a picture of the cemetery also. There is the last surviving child, a daughter, and other members of the family keep the cemetery maintained. You would have to contact somebody in Oakley, about non family members buried there. Doris: The town of Macon is in sections 32, 33 and 29, mostly in 32. Long Grove Cem. is located in section 13, which is in the far southeast corner of S. Macon Twp, right across the line from Milam Twp. By the way, there is a plat map on the Macon Co. web page, but I can't get it to fully load. Macon Cemetery is in section 29 of S. Macon Twp. Does anyone happen to have a plat map for Macon County? Generally you can get them free from a local insurance agent. They come out every 10 years or so. It shows who owns the land. Each township is mapped and the land boundaries and land owners are on the map. However, it is also extremely useful for precisely locating cemeteries, understanding where communities and other things are. You can precisely plot directions to a cemetery. Mind you, the cemeteries are not named but if you know the cemetery is in section 7 of township X you can find it easily. Someone who has one of these could be extremely helpful to the list. It doesn't have to be the most recent one because, of course, cemeteries don't move. Doris - long shot but township government wasn't instituted universally in Illinois immediately after it accepted in 1848. Before 1848 and for years thereafter, they had precincts. The precincts may or may not have had the same name as the resulting townships and generally did not have the same boundaries. Generally in the end there were more townships than precincts. I do not know when township government was instituted in Macon County. Wait - I looked it up - November 8, 1859. Spoils my idea but I think I'll send the message anyway for the information about precincts and townships. You can find some interesting information on Macon County at http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/irad/macon.html I have found the information on the township names is not always correct on that site. In some cases -- for example on Harristown it notes name changed from Harris -- Harris was probably the precinct name but it would be incorrect to assume they were precisely the same area. You should be able to get that marriage certificate from the county clerk. Basically the statewide marriage index is an index to the records held by the county clerks and transcribed by volunteers. Doris, Could your Macon possibly Macon, Illinois? There is a small town of Macon outside of Decatur, and I recall a cemetery just at the outskirts of the town. Rosie

Might I be able to get a copy of the marriage record, beyond the listing? I know that Sears is wrong, but if using what IRAD has will get me what I need, I'll take it! I've got lots and lots of earlier info on Jennie, and I'll believe how her minister/teacher father spelled her first husband's name in the family Bible, where he always used his best writing. Seass was a prominent early Moultrie Co family and they've done a lot of research. And Jennie's son always shows up as Seass. That doesn't stop Jennie from being Seace in the 1880 census! So while Sears is "wrong", if thats what the stat records show, the record may hold the key to the mytsteriouis Mr Bartlett, and to her death. Do you know how to get information that far back? And thank you for the information on G.A.'s wives. When I put that together with the 1880 census, this guy was fertile. He must have had another wife before poor Isabelle, because his children had mothers born in three different states. He really needed another wife after Hattie died to raise all the kids. Jennie must have really wanted out of her father's poverty-stricken house to take her 9-year old into that pile of kids, only 29 herself. I wonder if she died in childbirth herself.
